A key date in York’s Christmas diary is the York Early Music Christmas Festival. This annual event, organised by the National Centre for Early Music, will include highlights such as La Serenissima directed by Adrian Chandler and Stile Antico. Taking place at various locations throughout the city between December 5 and 14, the festival shines the spotlight on the world of music’s leading talents.
If a traditional Christmas carol is more your thing, York’s annual Community Carol Concert at the Barbican returns again this year, taking place on Sunday 14 December. Alternatively venture out of town to Castle Howard and enjoy their Carols & Candlelight performance or to
Fountains Abbey for a festive Music and Lights Experience.
York Minster York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral north of the Alps, is an amazing venue for contemplation through religious services and celebration.
Services The Minster holds a dedicated season of services across advent with traditional candle-lit events such as the Advent Procession, the raising of the Giant Advent Wreath, and the lighting of the Minster’s star, which will enthral. The season also includes the popular and much beloved Crib Service, Nine Lessons and Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.
Enjoy a most special Christmas carol concert at York Minster on 5 and 6 December, featuring the York Minster Choir, one of the UK’s leading choirs.
The concert also provides the opportunity to sing some of Britain’s favourite carols with the choir. The York Minster Choir will also perform a special concert, the Handel’s Messiah on Saturday 13 December in the beautiful setting of York Minster’s nave. Experience the story of Christ through this moving and poignant choral performance.
There are a number of additional craft workshops and activities for the family also available across the festive season. For further information go to www.yorkminster.org/Christmas or call 01904 557200.

DON’T MISS
Father Christmas when he
visits Barley Hall
in December.
Dates for the DiaryCity Centre IndulgenceThe revamped St Nicholas Christmas Fair traditionally takes place over a weekend, however this wintry favourite will for the first time fill Parliament Street with its quirky wooden huts selling crafty gifts and artisan goodies for a full 25 days. From Thursday 27 November to Sunday 21 December, shoppers have the chance to indulge in some extended browsing time and enjoy being served by Dickensian-clad characters.
In addition, if you are a food lover you will be spoilt for choice by the edible offerings at the fair as Deliciously Yorkshire members will display the best of the region’s local produce.
Should you be in search of gifts with a difference, a trip to Barley Hall’s Festive Market, taking place between Thursday 27 and Sunday 30 November, will do the trick. Festooned with festive garlands and traditional seasonal decorations, the hall will play host to medieval merchants who will showcase their wares in the historic townhouse.
YORK is set to build on its
impressive reputation as Britain’s
most Christmassy city when the
new-look St Nicholas Christmas Fair gets
underway. The much-loved annual event has
been given a tinselly twist and extended to a
longer run so that everyone can truly get into
the festive spirit.
St Nicholas Fair & Christmas Markets
Shambles MarketThe all-new Shambles Market is set to return to its home between Parliament Street and the Shambles on Monday 10 November following a £1.6 million refurbishment.
It will offer a range of fresh produce, crafts and day-to-day merchandise from 9am to 5pm, and is another must-visit for your Christmas shopping list.
If you need some more time to get the perfect gift for your loved one, fear not. From the evening of the Christmas lights switch-on – taking place on Thursday 20 November – Thursday nights will be the prime time to get the most of the markets as there will be late night opening across the different sites, plus Park and Ride will be open until 9.30pm to ensure you can get to and from the city centre with ease.

Going OutYorkshire is a foodie paradise. With seven Michelin-starred restaurants around the county, it’s no surprise that York and its surroundings offer an abundance of high street restaurants and independent eateries dotted around the area. These include hearty Yorkshire dishes created by Roux-trained chef Michael Hjort at Melton’s and tasty food served in a memorable riverside setting at The Star Inn the City.
Non-carnivores can tuck into yummy veggie and vegan food at El Piano or Goji, and there is nothing like a warming cup of tea and a delicious Fat Rascal from Bettys.
Find your perfect dining experience by taking a look at www.visityork.org/food or pop into Visit York’s Information Centre for your copy of the Taste leaflet, a round-up of popular restaurants and cafes in the city.
