The York St Nicholas

Fair 2015

The fabulously festive York St Nicholas Fair is the ultimate Christmas experience in the city.

St Nicholas Fair, York’s annual festive market, has been given a tinselly twist for 2015, with an extended run, new locations, and even more magical market stalls to peruse.

The Festive First Night takes place on 19 November and is the launch of the festivities in York that will see the official opening of the St Nicholas Fair, the lights switched on and late night shopping begin. From this date right up to 23 December, over 100 snug chalets with twinkling fairy lights will shine out from their positions along Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square and at new sites such as The Judge’s Lodging and Coppergate, selling inspired gift ideas and stocking fillers.

Something for Everyone

You will find that no two weekends are the same at the markets as a packed

programme has been devised to ensure you enjoy this very special York event. The uplifting sound of carols will fill the air during a weekend of choral music between 5 and 6 December; the York Christmas Antiques Festival gets underway at King’s Manor on 19 December and runs until 20 December; and for a truly enchanting festive experience, the new Ice Trail on 12 and 13 December will see glittering ice sculptures line the streets of York.

Ho Ho Ho!

There will be an extra special treat for little ones as Father Christmas will be taking up residence in his snuggly wooden grotto located just outside York’s Chocolate Story in King’s Square from mid-November. Children can have a special photograph taken with the jolly red-clad gent and if you take a trip around the attraction afterwards you’ll be able to discover the history of chocolate in York at Christmas.

Set your York Christmas to a tinselly, festive soundtrack with some of these magical musical events.

If you are seeking a Christmassy break that’s filled with carols, brass bands and orchestral masterpieces, look no further than York. From much-loved carols to historical festive tunes, there is something for all music lovers throughout the York St Nicholas Christmas Festival.

Highlights include the nationally and internationally renowned annual York Early Music Christmas Festival, which begins its packed programme on 4 December with a performance by the European Union Baroque Orchestra. There will also be uplifting choral music for the first night of the York Minster Choir Christmas Carol

Concert, which takes place at York Minster on 4 and 5 December and showcases traditional music performed by one of the UK’s leading choirs.

On Saturday 5 December choirs will be at various locations across the city raising funds for SASH, a local charity for young homeless people, at the Sing for SASH event. This will be followed by Carols for Christmas on Sunday 6 December when choirs round off the choral weekend by singing at regular intervals in York’s streets and squares between 10-11am and from 4pm.

’Tis the season to tuck into turkey, sprouts and warming mulled wine – and you’ll find tasty festive fare in York.

This is the city where you can dine beneath the soaring spires of the largest gothic cathedral in northern Europe, source fresh Yorkshire produce for your Christmas dinner, and purchase food-themed gifts from the markets.

If you plan on cooking for the whole family this Christmas, head to the market stalls during the York St Nicholas Fair, pick up some seasonal produce from the Shambles Market or try the medieval market at Barley Hall for delicious gift ideas. If you need something special, you’ll find oils and spirits to accompany your dishes at Demijohn and il Gusto.

Further afield you’ll find the Stable Courtyard Market at Castle Howard and The Balloon Tree farm shop for home-grown vegetables.

Find more foodie inspiration at www.visityork.org/taste or pop into the Visit York Information Centre for more of York’s culinary highlights.

For one weekend the Ice Trail will transform York, sprinkling some magic across the city.

The Ice Trail is a beautiful addition to York’s Christmas celebrations that will take place during the weekend of 12 and 13 December and is set to be a glittering celebration of the city. During your visit you will follow the trail to find 30 beautiful

carved figures made from crystal-clear ice sprinkled around the city centre and lining the surrounding streets.

In addition to the ethereal icy creations you can enjoy some festive alfresco treats at the food and drink stalls, sipping mulled wine as you decide which sculpture to see next. This is a highlight in York’s festive calendar and a truly unforgettable addition to your Christmas break in the city.

Count down to 2016 in style with an unforgettable New Year’s Eve in York.

Where will you be this New Year’s Eve? Why not see in 2016 in the jewel in Yorkshire’s crown. With its vibrant night life and stunning waterside eateries and bars, York is one of the most exciting cities in which to bring in the New Year.

Take your pick from the parties taking place across the city on 31 December. There are two special New Year’s Eve events to choose from at York Racecourse: the NYE Band Party, where a red carpet entrance and four-course meal awaits, or the NYE Disco Party, a three-course carvery meal followed by a disco into the New Year.

To avoid the dash for a taxi after midnight, you can combine the celebrations with a hotel stay at some of York’s most glamorous hotels. Dance the last of 2015 away at Mercure York Fairfield Manor’s New Year’s Eve Hollywood Night, a black tie ball that will see party-goers enjoy a five-course meal and disco, or the elegant Dean Court Hotel, where you will get a cocktail reception, followed by the New Year’s Eve Grand Dinner Dance.

Plan ahead and book your York stay so that you can get a good night’s rest after all of that partying. The highly experienced team at Visit York’s Information Centre can help you choose from hotels, guest houses and self-catering accommodation and secure the best rate, plus you can pick up your York Pass. Pop into 1 Museum Street, book online at www.visityork.org or call 01904 550099.
