Central to this rich theme is a celebration of the lifeand work of the violinist and composer ArcangeloCorelli. Corelli devoted his entire career to Rome, butexercised an unparalleled international influence in hislifetime. By the time of his death 300 years ago in1713 he was acknowledged as a truly Europeanphenomenon - as a performer, teacher and 'creator' ofthe Italian trio sonata and the concerto grosso - formsimitated or adapted by composers throughout Europe.

Another anniversary to be celebrated in 2013 is the450th of the birth of John Dowland, a composer andworld-famous lutenist who intended to study inRome, but whose career took him to France, Germanyand Denmark. His music is performed here by some oftoday’s finest international performers on lutes, violsand voices.

The Festival culminates with the 2013 InternationalYoung Artists Competition on 13 July featuringmusicians from around Europe and beyond.

The 29 events that make up the Festival includeconcerts, illustrated lectures and workshops from the earliest chant, found in medieval libraries acrossEurope, to Handel's glorious music for Vespers from his triumphant stay in Rome in 1707. Presented insome of York’s most beautiful historic venues, theFestival is a treasure trove of musical offerings. We look forward to welcoming you.

Handel in RomeHandel’s journeys around Italy in his early twenties nourished the fledgling composer. Most of his time wasspent in Rome, where a succession of connections with powerful patrons led to the creation of his firstmasterpieces in many of the essential genres of the day including pastoral cantatas, oratorios and churchmusic. David Vickers examines how Handel’s Roman activities prepared the foundations upon which hisillustrious career was built.

A Roman Arcadian CelebrationItaly at the start of the 18th century was the place to digest the latestcompositional forms and performance styles, so it comes as no surprisethat in 1706 the 21-year-old Handel’s insatiable passion for learning tookhim from Germany to Rome. There he met, performed with and no doubtlearnt from musicians such as Corelli, Pasquini, Alessandro and DomenicoScarlatti, and quite possibly Caldara too, as well as making influentialfriends at the aristocratic arts clubs that were the Arcadian Academies. Our opening concert presents extracts from music Handel provided for a

Carmelite Vespers service for the feast of the Madonna del Carmine in July 1707 including the famous DixitDominus, along with another of the latest fashions of the time – a Corelli concerto grosso – andspectacular motets both large and small.

This concert is dedicated to the memory of Sir Marcus Worsley - President of York Early Music Festival 1981 to 1999.

The Art of MelancholyThrough many of Dowland’ssongs there runs a deep veinof melancholy that speaksbeyond the fashions of thetime. In the past, suchmelancholy was often linkedto manic states or periods ofcreativity, but by alsoembracing Dowland’s output

as a vent of personal experience and expression wecan immediately engage in a dialogue with him andboth his poetry and music may be richer for it. Thisrecital, placing his songs amongst those ofcontemporaries such as Robert Johnston, ThomasCampion and John Danyel, throws open a window onthe famous quotation from Robert Burton’s Anatomyof Melancholy (1621), that melancholy is ‘known tofew, unknown to fewer’.

civis romanus sum

Great characters of Roman history and mythology have long been a source of inspiration. Some were greatheroes, others rather less admirable, but all were as susceptible to human passions and weaknesses as the restof us. The Minster Minstrels festival programme enlists music bringing us closer to some of these famousfigures, from Nero’s queen Poppea (Monteverdi) to the goddess Diana (Weelkes), and from emperor Dioclesian(Purcell) to general Scipione (Handel). Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 also finds its way in; its prominentrole for horns is thought by some to evoke a triumphal march for Caesar – or maybe it was Nero.

Minster Minstrels is the Festival’s young people’s instrumental ensemble – run as a partnership between theNCEM and the City of York Arts Academy with support from the Mayfield Valley Arts Trust.

Approaching Corelli Arcangelo Corelli is one of the great figures inRome’s musical history, seen in his time as ‘Orpheus of our age’ and the composer of exemplary instrumental chamber works whichoffered undisputed archetypes of classical elegance, refinement and formal clarity. Yet these models, which played a major part in defining the musicallanguage of the 18th century, did not spring fromnowhere; in this concert Riccardo Minasi and hisensemble examine the vibrant milieu which formedthe background to Corelli’s achievements, performing works by some of his brilliant but lesswell-known Roman predecessors andcontemporaries.

Dowland was intensely interested in the music of hiscontemporaries, both in England and on thecontinent. An apprenticeship spent in Paris was laterfollowed by a grand tour of Europe during which hecame into contact with important composers, singers and lutenists whose music he borrowed andimitated in his own works. Handel’s Te Deum and Jubilate for the Peace ofUtrecht were his first public church compositionsfor England, written in 1713 for a thanksgivingservice in St Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate a recentlysigned peace treaty. Composed for large forces, itforeshadows the grand choral style of later Englishworks such as Messiah and the Coronation Anthems.Heinrich Biber’s instrumental music has a veryindividual voice and sonority; his ‘suite’ ofmovements Battalia, composed in 1673, is typicalprogrammatic music of the time, its effects rangingfrom an alarming cacophony of drunken soldiers toslap-pizzicato musket shots!

Voicing Corelli Vocal pieces by Corelli? Yes, that’s right! Although Corelli’s music wasknown and admired throughout Europe, the fact that his publishedoutput was both small and restricted entirely to instrumental music wasa cause of frustration for many. To remedy the situation, steps had to betaken. Fabio Bonizzoni’s award-winning ensemble returns to Yorkfollowing their appearance here in 2009 with a unique programme ofvocal duets on sacred texts ingeniously adapted from Corelli’s trio sonatasby his contemporary admirer Antonio Tonelli, interspersing them withexamples of the real thing and a secular duet by Handel, written inLondon but recalling his own youthful days in Rome.

When the French viol player André Maugars played inRome in 1635 his virtuosity surprised all who heardhim since the instrument was no longer popular inItaly. Returning to Paris he began a tradition of greatFrench player-composers for the instrument, whichreached a peak of perfection in the hands of St.Colombe and his pupil, Marin Marais. Marais' playingapparently had an airy tone and refined graceful style:he played 'like an angel' in comparison with the'devilish' Forqueray, whose music flashed withItalianate flamboyance. As elsewhere in Europe thepolished sonata style of Corelli worked its magic inParis: Couperin in particular shows his understandingof the Roman's achievement. Today's programmeexplores some of the highlights of French virtuoso violmusic, and is performed by one of the world's greatestplayers of the instrument.

The Sixteen Harry Christophers director

The Queen of Heaven

The Sixteen returns to York with a programme focusing on a Mass – Missa Regina Caeli – by one of the mostfamous of all composers to have made their careers in Rome, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. Seen by manyin his own time and since as a paragon of flawless and elegant Renaissance polyphony, he was employed by anumber of leading Roman religious institutions, including the Sistine Chapel. Alongside the Mass and otherexquisite works by Palestrina are the famous Allegri Miserere – once one of the Sistine Chapel’s most jealouslyguarded secrets – and three motets by the leading contemporary Scottish composer James MacMillan.

“the choral sounds were wonderfully clear and unfailingly precise … Christopher’s group can be just asimpressively extrovert as they had been austerely restrained.” The Guardian
