ADORATION OF THE MOST BLESSED SACRAMENT When He returned, He found them

asleep. He said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one

hour?" Mark 14:37

Come and spend the most peaceful hour (or part of an hour) of your week with Jesus. Each Friday after the 9 AM Mass the Blessed Sacrament is exposed upon the altar (Lower Church). The recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy will take place at 3:00pm, followed by reposition. Please join us. We are committed to having at least two persons present at all times of Adoration. There is a sign-in book in the Gathering Room near the entrance to the Mary Chapel. If you can commit just one hour or more, please call Ursula Koslowski at 781-729-6170 or email [email protected]

St. Mary Parish 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 5, 2017

NOTES FROM THE PASTOR February is the month that we celebrate Black History. We have two major events coming up. One is our Black History Month Celebration which is taking place on Sunday, February 12, at 2pm. We will feature Tammy Denease, who will tell us the story of Belinda the Afrikan: Compelled to Sevitude. On February 25th, we welcome the Archdiocesan Black Catholic Choir to add joy to the celebration of the 4pm Mass.

This past week has been one of turmoil in our country. The President’s decision to ban entrance of immgrants from selected countries into the United States has caused demonstrations and hardship to many families who were slated to migrate here.

Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich is taking the Trump Administration and its supporters to task over the ban on travelers from Muslim-majority countries, calling it "disastrous" and "contrary to both Catholic and American values." Here is his full statement, which was shared at Chicago-area parishes on Sunday:

“This weekend proved to be a dark moment in U.S. history. The executive order to turn away refugees and to close our nation to those, particularly Muslims, fleeing violence, oppression and persecution is contrary to both Catholic and American values. Have we not repeated the disastrous decisions of those in the past who turned away other people fleeing violence, leaving certain ethnicities and religions marginalized and excluded? We Catholics know that history well, for, like others, we have been on the other side of such decisions. These actions impose a sweeping and immediate halt on migrants and refugees from several countries, people who are suffering, fleeing for their lives. Their design and implementation have been rushed, chaotic, cruel and oblivious to the realities that will produce enduring security for the United States. They have left people holding valid visas and other proper documents detained in our airports, sent back to the places some were fleeing or not allowed to board planes headed here. Only at the eleventh hour did a federal judge intervene to suspend this unjust action. We are told this is not the "Muslim ban" that had been proposed during the presidential campaign, but these actions focus on Muslim-majority countries. They make an exception for Christians and non-Muslim minorities, but not for Muslims refugees fleeing for their lives. Ironically, this ban does not include the home country of 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers. Yet, people from Iraq, even those who assisted our military in a destructive war, are excluded. The United States has a long history of welcoming refugees who are fleeing for their lives and Catholic organizations have helped to resettle many families, men, women, and children, from around the globe. Many of our priests, religious and laypeople have accompanied newcomers precisely to assist them in this process. Because of our history of aiding in refugee and migrant settlement for decades, we know the very lengthy and thorough vetting process they must face before they are admitted to our country. We have seen initial fear turn into a generous willingness of local communities to accept and integrate refugees. Here in Chicago generations of migrants have found a new home. We are better for it. The world is watching as we abandon our commitments to American values. These actions give aid and comfort to those who would destroy our way of life. They lower our estimation in the eyes of the many peoples who want to know America as a defender of human rights and religious liberty, not a nation that targets religious populations and then shuts its doors on them. It is time to put aside fear and join together to recover who we are and what we represent to a world badly in need of hope and solidarity. "If we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life; if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities." Pope Francis issued these challenging words to Congress in 2015, and followed with a warning that should haunt us as we come to terms with the events of the weekend: "The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us."“

St. Agatha Virgin, Martyr

Feast Day: February 5 Agatha, born in Sicily of noble parents, suffered a glorious

martyrdom at Catania in the persecution of the emperor Decius. For when Quintianus, the praetor of Sicily, had

vainly tried every means to tempt her from her virginity, he had her arrested as adhering to the Christian superstition.

First she was beaten, then tortured on the rack with whitehot iron plates laid on her; then one of her breasts was

cut off. Next she was thrown into prison, where St. Peter the Apostle appeared to her by night and healed her.

Again called before the praetor, she persevered in confessing Christ, and he had her rolled over broken

pottery and burning coals. But then a great earthquake violently shook the city, and Quintianus, afraid of a riot

among the people, gave orders that Agatha, now half dead, secretly be taken back to prison. There after a short time

she went to Heaven, on February 5.

MEET THE BISHOP On Sunday, February 26 at 12 Noon, Bishop Mark O'Connell, Regional Bishop of our North Region will be conducting a specially designed meeting in Manion Hall at Saint Eulalia Church, 50 Ridge Street, Winchester. It is designed for Non-Catholics, fallen away Catholics, confused Catholics, and all who would just like to be a part of the conversation. It will be a simple format of questions and answers. If you wish your question to remain anonymous, there will be the opportunity to submit questions in writing anonymously. Please feel free to invite your friends and family members who might want to meet the Bishop and ask questions about our Church in an open, non-judgmental format. The meeting is open to all in the North Region and beyond. Please feel most welcome to come.

Money Matters Grand Annual Appeal Update We are just now wrapping up our Annual Appeal. We did reach and exceed our goal, but we still have received less than we did last year. At this time last year, we had received $341,323 (we went on the receive a grand total of nearly $360,000). To date this year, we have received $328,265. We are grateful to those who have been so generous this year. If you have not yet given, please consider sending a donation. It will be used for a good purpose. 2016 End of Year Tax Statements have been mailed to our Online and Envelope Users. If you have not yet received yours, please call the rectory and we will get one to you. Fuel and Snow Collection Next weekend, a fuel and snow collection is being taken up to pay the oil or gas bills and to defray the cost of snow removal. In total, we have incurred bills in the neighborhood of $20,000 as of the first week in February. Our aging buildings are often not energy efficient, and they use more energy than we’d like. The Fuel & Snow collection helps to pay the thousands of dollars that we spend a year to heat our buildings and to clear the snow to give easy and safe access to all our buildings.

Our Sunday focus on discipleship continues in today’s readings. We who were called to live the Beatitudes last week are now encouraged to let our light shine. As we move through our celebration today, let us ask God to strengthen our faith so that we can truly believe that the presence of Christ in each of us has the power to bring light to the darkness of racism, fear, hunger, oppression, and all the other evils in our world.
