1 The AT smooths the way

1.1 The new weighing feeling

Your AT balance offers a wide range offunctions, yet is simple to operate.

For example, there is no need what-ever to concern yourself with theadjustment - your AT performs theadjustment fully automatically. Your ATis equipped with an adjustable glassdraft shield with a fully automatic doorfunction. Just two examples to give youa preview of the full range of equipmentof your new balance.

Your AT balance is distinguishedprimarily, however, by its user friendli-ness. You set the balance up, connectit to the power supply and after a fewminutes warm-up time you can imme-diately start weighing. You thus obtainyour first weighing result in the shortesttime possible.

The AT offers you the operating conve-nience and the complete range ofoptions you expect from a top-qualityanalytical balance. There is, however,no need for you to grapple at themoment with functions you will notneed until later.

In this first section you will find out howsimply you can start up your AT andperform normal weighings.

How you can transport the balance

When you position your AT balance atits location, please note the following:

To transport the balance, hold it at thefront under the display and at the rearbeneath the balance housing. Never liftyour AT using the draft shield or the«Re-Zero» key!

Mount the draft cover and level thebalance

- Place the draft cover 16 suppliedseparately in position. When posi-tioning the draft cover, ensure that itis not touched by the weighing pan, which must move freely in itsrecess. If necessary, turn theweighing pan to the correctposition. The draft cover is usefulprimarily for balances with thesemimicro range (readability 0.01mg). In many cases it need not beinstalled in weighings in theanalytical range (readability 0.1mg).As an option, semimicro balancescan be equipped with an additionalinner draft shield whose installationis described in the enclosedmounting instructions.

- Turn the two screw feet 24 at therear of the balance housing untilthe air bubble is in the middle oflevel 17.

Prepare the glass draft shield

The draft shield of your AT balancecomprises several parts which can becombined in a number of ways usingthe coupling elements. To precludetransport damage, these couplingelements are not locked in positionwhen shipped. Connect the individualparts of the draft shield as follows:

- Pull all doors of the draft shield andthe opposing door holder 14 for-wards as far as possible.

- Push the two upper couplingelements 9 and 10 upward and thetwo lower coupling elements 11 and12 downward until they lock.

When in this position, the whole draftshield opens. Additional combinationpossibilities of the individual doors aredescribed in Section 2.1.

Connect your AT to the powersupply

- Connect the AC adapter supplied toconnection socket 23 at the rear ofyour AT balance and then to thepower supply.

- The AC adapter can either beplaced on the bench, attached tothe balance or, to save space, bemounted on the wall. The AC adap-ter holder and the installation setwith dowels and screws are usedfor this. Appropriate details aregiven in Section 6.1.

After connection, your AT balance ison standby and ready for weighingafter a brief warm-up time of about 5minutes. (See also Technicalspecifications page 84).

1.3 Weighing made simple

- By pressing the «On/Off» key youswitch your AT from standby to theweighing mode . The balance nowperforms a brief self-test and alldisplay segments light up briefly.

- If the draft shield is open, you canclose it by pressing one of the twokeys .

Your AT balance is fitted with a fullyautomatic door function, which ensuresthat the draft shield is always open orclosed at the right time. Section 3.4describes how you can switch off thisautomatic mechanism. On completionof the self-test, this function opens thedraft shield completely automatically.

Set your balance to zero (taring):

- If you wish to tare a container, placeit on the balance.

- Press the «Re-Zero» key. The fullyautomatic door function closes thedraft shield.

Zeroing of the display (taring) is auto-matic. While the zeroing is in progressand the horizontal segments appear inthe display, you can abort the processby briefly pressing the «Re-Zero» keyagain.

As soon as the warning beep sounds, zeroing of the balance is complete andthe fully automatic door function opensthe draft shield.

- Load the weighing sample andpress the «Print» key. The fullyautomatic door function closes thedraft shield.

- The triangle symbol (print symbol)and the circle symbol of the stabilitydetection (ASD) appear in thedisplay.

- When the symbol of the stabilitydetector (ASD) fades, the warningbeep sounds; the triangle symbolalso fades and the draft shieldopens automatically.Note : You can also open and closethe draft shield with one of the keys or by hand.

- Read off the weighing result. Theresult remains “frozen” on thedisplay for 5 seconds. This can berecognized by the flashing circleabove the weighing unit. If thebalance is attached to a printer, theweighing result is automaticallyprinted out. With this automatic door func-tion, your work steps in weighingare reduced from 9 to 5! (Youdon't have to open and close thedraft shield twice.)

It is possible that the warning beepsounds during a weighing and theadjacent symbol appears in the display.Your AT balance uses this to show thatit would like to adjust itself. But there isno need for you to interrupt your workas the balance waits until you have notcarried out any weighings for a periodof about 5 minutes and then performsthe fully automatic self-adjustment(proFACT). The symbol remains lit upuntil the balance has adjusted itself oruntil you trigger the adjustment by a

keystroke. Section 5.4 shows you howto trigger the adjustment yourself.

- For switching off the balance, liftup the «On/Off» key briefly frombelow. This closes the draft shieldautomatically if the fully automaticdoor function is switched on. Other-wise, close the draft shield manuallyto prevent the ingress of dust anddirt.

After being switched off, the balance ison standby . When it is switched onagain, it needs no warm-up time and isin immediate operational readiness.

Some additional tips:

- If you have made a mistake duringweighing, there is no need to worry:Simply switch your AT off and thenimmediately on again. You will laterlearn of other possibilities to bringyour AT to weighing readinessagain.

- You can also effect the zeroing(taring) of the balance using thefoot or hand switch (available asan accessory) attached to thebalance via connection 18. Opera-tion with the foot switch leaves youboth hands free for loading your AT.

- If you ever have to disconnect yourAT from the power supply, firstswitch it off by lifting up the «On/Off» key. After the balance hasbeen reconnected, it is in thestandby mode and “STANDBY”appears in the display.

After an unexpected power outage, however, or if you have notswitched off your AT before discon-necting it from the power supply, when power is restored again“–OFF–” appears in the display. When the «On/Off» key is nowpressed, in this case an extended, internal self-test is first performed. Here the model designation and thesoftware version are briefly dis-played, and all display segmentslight up for a short space of time.

2 Your AT - a balance with extremeease of operation

2.1 A glass draft shield withunlimited possibilities

With the glass draft shield you canadapt your AT balance to the localconditions (principally drafts), to yourindividual style of weighing, to the sizeof the tare containers, and to the typeof weighing and loading.

The fixed bars of a traditional draftshield prevent access to the weighingchamber.

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

9

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

The draft shield of the AT balance hasno fixed bars and the weighing cham-ber is freely accessible. Your AT is thusalso especially well suited to automaticloading.

The left, right and upper doors of thedraft shield can be combined in anyway and hence matched to yourweighing needs by means of thecoupling elements 9 to 12.Try out various combinations by shiftingthe coupling elements upward anddownward. For the manual dooroperation the coupling elements 11 and12 must always be disengaged (topposition)!

When small weighing samples haveto be loaded, we advise you to openonly one of the two side doors. Yourbalance then operates quicker sincethe disturbing air currents are lessthan when more doors of the draftshield are open. You can operate the draft shieldmanually in the traditional manner.

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

10

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

A further tip: You will obtain the mostaccurate results in the quickest possi-ble manner if you close the draft shieldcompletely during weighing! If this isnot possible, for instance with bulkyweighing samples, you should combinethe doors of the draft shield such thatthe greatest possible part of the draftshield remains closed during theweighing.

So that excellent weighing results canalso be achieved fast under difficultweighing conditions, you can also usean inner draft shield.(Order number 210270)

For loading the balance, open onlyas many doors as necessary. Withrelatively small weighing samples orrather small tare containers, it isnormally sufficient to open a singledoor. This lessens the influence ofdrafts and speeds up the weighingprocess.

The semiautomatic operation can beeffected either with the left or the right key. In this case, the draft shield isopened and closed by the motor.

In certain applications, such as zeroing(taring) of the balance, the draft shieldopens and closes fully automaticallyas you already know from your firstweighing. Manual or semiautomaticoperation is also possible when thefully automatic door function is operati-ve. The fully automatic door functionprimarily facilitates work with the singleor twin foot switch. Section 3.4 showsyou how to switch off the fullyautomatic door function.

2.2 The DeltaTrac® - aninformative display

The DeltaTrac® 28 is a supplement tothe digital display 25. It provides youwith a pictorial representation of theweighing range in use and that stillremaining. The dynamics of aweighing process can be followed onthe DeltaTrac® extremely well. Simplyobserve the DeltaTrac® during aweighing and you will immediatelyunderstand its function.

The DeltaTrac® gives you a new feelfor weighing, even with specialapplications, for example in repeatedweighing in to a specified target valueand in percent weighings. You will findfurther details in Section 5.2.

2.3 Is your AT a DeltaRange®balance?

The AT261 and AT460 models areDeltaRange® balances. They have aten times more accurate, movable finerange, which shows an additionaldecimal place. Thus, for example, theAT261 has a resolution of 0.1 mg overthe entire weighing range and amovable fine range with a resolution of0.01 mg.This fine range can be called up at anypoint in the whole weighing range asoften as liked.

The movable fine range covers 62 g forboth models. Each time you set thebalance to zero (tare) with the «Re-Zero» key, the fine range is switched in.If the span of the fine range isexceeded, the balance automaticallyswitches into the coarse range. The finerange can be called up again byrezeroing the balance once more usingthe «Re-Zero» key.

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

12

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

Note:This ten times more accurate movablefine range also remains active indifferential weighing.

2.4 How you can weigh in thecoarse and fine range

Semimicro and DeltaRange® balancesof the AT series are equipped with aswitch key which you can use to switchfrom the coarse range to a ten timesmore accurate fine range.

The AT thus allows you to work in therange best suited to your needs.

If, for example, instead of a highresolution you need a stable weighingresult as rapidly as possible, you switchfrom the fine range to the course rangeusing the switch key. This makes yourAT very fast and the weighing resultsare extremely stable.

You can thus also disable theDeltaRange® if you do not need it.

3.3 How to adapt your AT tothe local conditions

For all weighings, we advise youalways to open the draft shield only asfar as necessary. You thus achievestable weighing results as quickly aspossible.

If, despite a closed draft shield, nostable weighing results are found, thecause could lie with unfavorable localconditions such as vibrations. Veryminor, hardly noticeable vibrations ofthe weighing table are usually involved.

This setting is suitable for very quietand stable surroundings. The balan-ce operates very rapidly, but is relati-vely sensitive to external disturbances.

- When you have selected the appro-priate setting, press the «Set» key.The chosen setting then immediate-ly becomes active, and the balancereturns to the weighing mode.

Note:A further reason for an unstable displayof the weighing result could lie, forinstance, with electrostatic charging ofthe weighing sample or the container. You will find additional informationregarding this in Section 7.1.

3.4 How to switch off thefully automatic doorfunction

You are already familiar with theconvenient automatic door function ofyour AT balance from your first weigh-ing. When the automatic door operationis switched on, the draft shield closesautomatically after the «Re-Zero» key(zeroing/taring) or the «Print» key(printout of the weighing result, seeSection 5.6) has been pressed. Assoon as the weight display is stable, the draft shield is reopened for the nextweighing operation (e.g. weighing in,loading the balance). The draft shield isthus always in the correct position forthe next weighing process. Routine

Adjustment and linearization withproFACT

In this parameter you define theadjustment mode i.e., the way in whichyour balance should be adjusted andlinearized. The following possibilitiesare available:

- The AT balance adjusts andlinearize itself fully automaticallyby loading two internal adjustmentweights. The process is initiated assoon as a change in the operatingconditions makes this necessary. One of the most important initiationcriteria is a temperature fluctuationin the surroundings of ± 1.5 °C. Youdo not have to concern yourself withthe adjustment of the balance. Theadjustment and the simultaneouslinearization provide you with thesurety that the displayed valuematches the mass of the loadedweight over the entire weighingrange of your AT.

5.4 How to trigger theadjustment manually

In the factory the balance is preset toproFACT. The AT balance adjusts andlinearizes itself as soon as a change inthe ambient conditions makes thisnecessary. You thus need not concernyourself with the adjustment. But youalso have the possibility to trigger themotorized adjustment with the internaladjustment weights at all times at akeystroke. This can be practical if theaudio warning beep sounds during aweighing and the adjacent symbolappears in the display. This is yourAT’s way of showing you that it wouldlike to adjust itself. You can now eitherinterrupt your work at the nextconvenient opportunity for about 5minutes, when the AT will adjust itself,or, you yourself can trigger themotorized adjustment by pressing akey.

- As soon as the horizontal dashesdisappear, the reference piecenumber and the reference weighthave been read in and your AT isready for counting or weighing.

If the automatic door function isswitched on, the draft shield opensautomatically on completion of theweighing-in process. If not, open ityourself.

Depending on how you have weighedin the reference weight, you can now:

- Count into the container withdisplay of the total number of piecesin the container or…

7 Any questions?

7.1 What happensif the weight displayis unstable?

Since it is not always easy to determinethe exact cause of an unstable displaythe most frequent sources of error arelisted below.

You will find detailed explanations inthe enclosed booklet “Weighing theright way”.

An unsuitable location

Strong drafts (e.g. from air conditioningsystems) or vibrations of the bench arefactors that can cause disturbances.

- Look for a suitable location, adaptthe vibration adapter to the localconditions (see Section 3.3) andclose the draft shield as fully aspossible (see Section 2.1).

An insufficiently closed draft shield

- Close the draft shield as fully aspossible (see Section 2.1).

Electrostatic charging of weighingsamples and containers

This charging frequently appears inheated rooms with dry air (below 40-45% rel. humidity) and with weighingsamples made of glass or plastic. Theelectrical charges generate forces thatcan disturb the weighing.

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

59

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

- In the simplest case, it may besufficient to remove the draft cover16 and place the weighing samplein a metal container.

Magnetic weighing samples orcontainers

- In simple cases, it may be sufficientto increase the distance betweenthe weighing sample and theweighing pan. For this, place theweighing sample on a nonmagneticmetallic (e.g. aluminum) or glassvessel. A further improvement canbe achieved by removing the draftcover 16.

Weighing samples or containersthat are not at ambient temperature

Weighing samples or containers thatare warmer or colder than the ambienttemperature of the balance can causedisturbing air currents and buoyancyerrors. Weight changes due to theuptake or evolution of surface moisturecan also be the cause. These lead towrong or unstable weighing results.

- Wait until the weighing sample andthe container have attained theambient temperature. Do not touchthe weighing sample or the contai-ner with your hand (about 35 °C),but use only the tongs or thetweezers.

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

60

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

Weighing samples or containers thatabsorb or evolve moisture readily

All weighing samples or containersmade of wood, cardboard, paper, cork (e.g. holder for round-bottomedflasks), plastic or rubber can absorbor evolve enough moisture to make thedisplay unstable and cause display ofnonreproducible or wrong weighingresults.

- If at all possible, containers made ofsuch material should be replaced bymetal or glass vessels. If this is notpossible, operations should at leastbe performed in a room with aconstant atmospheric humidity.

The weighing sample or the contai-ner touches the draft cover

- In such a case remove draft cover16.

The weighing pan is placed at anangle and touches the draft cover orthe base

- Turn the pan to the center position(see Section 6.3).

Contamination

Powder, liquid or other residues at theedge of the weighing pan or betweenthe weighing pan and the draft covercan lead to unstable displays if theweighing pan no longer has completelyunrestricted movement.

- Clean the weighing pan and thedraft cover (se Section 6.3).

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

61

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

The weighing process adapter isswitched off

If the weighing process adapter isswitched off, the weight display doesnot always achieve stability when thelocal conditions are unfavorable andmeasurements are performed in thesemimicro range.

- Use this setting of the weighingprocess adapter exclusively forapplications in which the dynamicsof the weighing process are of primeinterest (see Section 3.2).

7.2 How can the weighingspeed be increased?

The weighing speed or the stabilizationtime of your AT is influenced consider-ably by the following factors andsettings:

Vibration adapter

If the local conditions allow (see Sec-tion 3.3), you can shorten the stabiliza-tion time of your AT by setting themedium or small wave symbol of thevibration adapter. Changing the settingof the vibration adapter by one stepcauses your AT to react around a thirdfaster.

Readability

If your application allows, you shouldreduce the readout increments for thelast decimal place. The larger thereadout increments (e.g. steps of 5instead of 1), the more rapid the opera-tion of your AT balance (see Section4.4).

Artisan Scientific - Quality Instrumentation ... Guaranteed | (888) 88-SOURCE | www.artisan-scientific.com

62

Operating instructions METTLER TOLEDO AT balances

Automatic stability detection

Your AT achieves stability quicker ifyou reduce the stability detection. If youselect, for example, stage 1(ASD –1–)instead of stage 6 (ASD –6–), thebalance releases the weighing result asstable decidedly more quickly (seeSection 4.4).

Glass draft shield, Inner draft shield

Your AT operates faster if you openthe draft shield to load the balanceonly as much as necessary. So thatexcellent weighing results can also beachieved fast under difficult weighingconditions, you can also use an innerdraft shield. (Order number 210270).The disturbing effects of any incomingdrafts in the weighing chamber arethus lessened (see Section 2.1).

Always select the fastest setting in themenu or configuration register thatyour application allows. You cannaturally combine all measures andhence produce a marked increase inthe weighing speed of your AT.

7.3 What happens if…?

…the display remains completelyblank?

Possible causes are:

- no power line voltage

- power cable not connected

- wrong power line voltage

Check and if necessary rectify thespecified error sources. If the balancedoes not function after switching onwith the «On/Off» key, contactMETTLER TOLEDO service.

Reference weightRepresentative reference weight.Needed among other things for theperformance of percent weighings andpiece counting.

- In percent weighings. Referenceweight = 100%

- In piece counting: Reference weight= weight of the reference piecenumber

Sections 5.2 and 5.3

RepeatabilityConsistency of the weighing result inseveral repetitions on the same balan-ce with the same weighing sample andunder identical weighing conditions. Itis unnecessary that each individualweighing lies within the limits; rather astatistical function is involved. Therepeatability is usually expressed asthe standard deviation s of 10weighings.

Resolution (resolving power) of abalanceSee “Readability”

Re-ZeroInternational designation for the zeroingof the display and for the zeroing key. Also used for zero setting, taring andthe tare bar, although the definitionsare not identical.Section 1.3
