1 ` Message from Rob, our District Commissioner. Welcome to edition two of our newsletter. It's great to see you have been submitting your items. Keep them coming. Hopefully the newsletter will be a more frequent item, but that depends on your stories being sent in. Firstly I want to say well done on census this year. Although it did show a slight decrease in membership we have a lot to be proud of. Including the achievements of our young people in gaining their chief scouts awards. These were recognised at a county event for the Scouts and Explorers and a district event for the Beavers and Cubs. Also, well done to John Sharp (1st Boston) on his Award of Merit and to Dave May (DDC) for his Silver Acorn which he will gain in the St George’s Day awards. We have a lot to look forward to this year and I am looking forward to being involved in your adventures and activities. This year I will be on district scout and cub camps and no doubt attending many other exciting events with the district. Thank you for all you do and keep doing. GROWTH, INCLUSIVITY, COMMUNITY IMPACT and YOUTH SHAPED. Our aims are PEOPLE, PERCEPTION and PROGRAMME. #skillsforlife All of these should be in your mind when planning your programme and activities. As a district, I am proud of all our groups and the programmes you deliver so keep it up. Look after the young leaders, one day they will be running the show. Thank you all for all your doing and continue to do. You’re all local heroes in my eyes. Edition 2 February 2019 http://www.bostonscouts.org.uk/ #SkillsForLife Message from our editor. Caving

Getting Very Festive!!!!

Beavers Summer Camp 2018 SUMMER CAMP by Clara Copeland On the 18th and 19th of August 2018 the 4th Boston Beavers went to camp. We did scratch art, had free time and slept in tents. We also made a campfire-led by Akela Jayne. Before we went to bed we had warm milk and camp donuts. We used glow sticks to make star constellations with them. We were treated to sausages and chips from the chip shop. We went on a walk and we had two challenges biggest pinecone and interesting stick. We also made a shelter using sticks. I really enjoyed camp. I liked camp because there was so much to do. I also liked camp because I was with my friends. I can’t wait till next camp because I know I will be with my friends Thank you to the Leaders for taking us.

In December 2018, the District took part in the

Christmas carol service. It was a great evening.

Well done to Witham

Explorers who got up on stage and entertained

everyone

On the 9th December 2018 a team of scouts from 1st Boston Sea Scouts joined up with a few others from 5th

and 7th Boston for a caving experience with Lincoln Scout Caving Team. Pete Green from 8th Boston kindly provided transport and drove the scouts up to Matlock where they met the caving instructors in no other than Sainsbury’s

Café! After the early start and little traffic, we purchased hot drinks for the scouts while awaiting the morning

briefing. Following the beverages, we then went in convoy to the meeting point a few 100m from the Mouldridge Mine entrance. Here the scouts were issued with the relevant kit,

overalls, hard hats, lights and gloves. Once kitted up and allocated into groups the nerves started kicking in and a

few faces were looking a little apprehensive. With a word of encouragement and their instructors, they then made their way to the mines entrance where we waved them

goodbye! ‘The mine looked tiny from the outside, but as soon as we were in it was massive. In the mine I got to experience a banana slide, as well as lots of climbing, crawling, sliding and at some points squeezing through tiny spaces. Although it was cold, wet and muddy, this was one of the best experiences too date!’ (Kirsty Moncrieff: 1st Boston

“I joined beavers when I was six and Squirrel, who is now TicTac, LadyBird who is now Red, and Wasp who has left, were very welcoming and although I was very, very nervous, the games and subjects and all the leaders soon had us playing and learning together, and suddenly I wasn’t so scared about going. I soon moved up to Cubs after achieving my Chief Scout Bronze award at the age of 8. The new leaders, Baloo, Bagheera and Akela were amazing as I started on my Challenge badges that would get me my Silver award. To earn this award, I needed to earn 6 activity or staged activity badges that we would all do while at Cubs and finish 7 challenge awards: these are…. Our Skills Challenge Award * Our Outdoors Challenge Award * Our Adventure Challenge Award * Teamwork Challenge Award * Team Leader Challenge Award * Personal Challenge Award. I ended up doing 14 different types of activity badges. For the Road Safety Badge, we had to use the green cross code around town and did a chip shop challenge. This was basically using the green cross code to go around the best chip shops and try them. The best chips turned out to be at Eagles, they were delicious, plus we got to eat chips. We then talked to our leaders about the importance of road safety. As a Team Leader at Cubs, the team leader Challenge badge saw me look after a new Cub, run games, and also asked everyone in my Six what they would like to do”

Awards Afternoon

34 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were presented with a letter of congratulations from DC Rob Johnson by ADC Cubs Jayne Maddy in recognition of all the hard work they had to put in over the 2 years in

the section to receive the highest award they can earn before moving up. Many parents and siblings came along to cheer them on as they received their awards.

A message from Flynn (5th Boston Scouts) who told everyone about his journey to Chief Scout Silver

Encouraging Cubs On 9th Feb, the district Cubs when to Leeds armouries, to those that haven't been, it's a 5 storey building with indoor bridges and balconies. There's also a spiral staircase that allows you to see outside. And lots of glass.

I'd just like to give a special mention to these 3 Cubs from 7th. Oliver, (middle) has a fear of heights. Quite a bad one to be fair. When we arrived we looked at the wall of arms and started to climb the stairs. The cub got scared, held my hand all the way up, but managed it (without looking outside) however, at the top he had to cross a glass wall bridge, this is where he froze to the spot, the fear took over big time he turned white, he was shaking uncontrollably and clung to me like glue, however with quite a bit of coaxing from me and the other Cubs (James on the right and Phoenix on the left)he managed to walk across it (I thought he was going to crush my fingers.) This was repeated a few times whilst crossing the bridges and using the stair as well as the glass lifts. But with encouragement from his friends, he achieved it each time (as long as he was with me.) By the end of the day he was trying to do it alone,

yet the others wouldn't leave his side and encouraged him through every step. This photo was taken 3 floors up. He felt brave enough to walk across the bridge without holding on to anyone and focused getting across. As their leader, I am extremely proud of each of them. The encouragement given by the others was heart-warming and shows true friendship. They followed their promise, to do their best and help other people. This is what scouting is about. And this is why I scout. From Carl Gibson 7th Boston

Skirbeck Beavers come to town.

In 2018 the district launched a new Beavers group and in October the first four young people were invested into the group. The group meets on a Wednesday evening 6.30-7.30pm at Skirbeck church. We are looking for leaders to help run the group, we also need a chair, secretary and treasurer as well as committee members. If you are interested in joining the group, then please contact Rob on 07443 415449 or email [email protected] or alternatively you can email Dave May at [email protected]
