tree top decoration The shining star atop the tree reminds me of happy, joyful Christmas days I have had so far. The mem-ories of sock filled with wish-list, the jingling bells and stripped candy canes fill my heart with a jolly mood. Christmas gifts with a ribbon on top, mistletoe hanging near the tree cheer me.

Not just ornamentsChristmas ornaments are used to decorate homes and the Xmas tree. Apart from their religious significance, these adornments appeal to children for different rea-sons. Pradnya Naik speaks to students to find out what these symbols mean to them

Colourful baublesThe swinging Christmas baubles give me immense happiness and bring back my childhood memories. As a child, I loved playing with Ping Pong balls. The difference between the two is that the baubles don’t bounce. But, they jingle in the breeze making the season Christmassy and colourful.rIDDhI khanDeParkerStd IX, Fatima Convent Girls High School

hey santa!Santa to me is more than just a Christmas decoration. He reminds me of the time when I would eagerly wait for him to bring precious gifts. That’s why I still admire the cute looking, bearded, red coat wearing man hung on my Christmas tree.

Cold snowflakesSnowflakes are the most beautiful ornament. Every time I decorate my tree with snowflakes, I remember a tale which has nothing to do with the festive traditions. It’s a tale of pixies in which they would bite and suck out warmth during the winter cold.

Not just ornaments

Christmas is the season of giving and spreading happiness. But should these acts be limited to

only the season? Being kind, taking out time for others, laughing, sharing and caring is something that we should be doing all 365 days, year after year.

A beginning has to be made some-where though. Ashish Hegde, a Std

VIII student, after his visit to Aas Foundation situated at Kothrud, decided to volunteer there.

“I had gone to Aas Foundation with my mother, over a year ago, and made a cash dona-tion. Four months ago, I again visited it with my schoolmates. After that visit, I decided to

teach the kids computers,” said

Ashish, who studies in the City Interna-tional School, Kothrud.

Last Sunday he visited Aas and taught 20 students.

“I have a mixed group of students. I have introduced the younger kids to funny videos. I have begun a basic introduction to MS Windows to the older children,” explained Ashish.

A new world opened up for the children at Aas who bombarded their teacher with questions.

A bemused Ashish explained, “On my first day, they asked me questions like, ‘How many computers are there in this world?’ ‘Who invented the computers?’”

Answering the second question was relatively easy for Ashish. But, for the first question and several that followed,

he had to do research. “My respect for teachers has gone up

by several notches,” he grinned. Talking about the infrastructure avail-

able at Aas, Ashish said, “They have got one desktop computer which is not enough for all. So I take along my laptop.”

Ashish, who takes private tuition from Anagha Thombare, founder of Aas, discussed with her about upgrading the infrastructure. He is also determined to be consistent about his Sunday date with his students.

“I will teach during holidays too. I also plan to set up a coaching centre for these kids to teach them computer and other skills,” he signed off on that note.

Lobsters Lobsters are one of the expensively priced cuisine in fine dine restaurants today. But in the early 19th century, the American lobster was not popular at all. In fact, it was considered as a mark of poverty or food consumed by lower class of society. The devel-opment of lobster smack, which is a custom-made boat with open holding wells on the deck to keep the lobsters alive during transport, transformed the lobster fisheries business. Once New Yorkers and Bostonians developed a taste for these lobsters, the delicacy saw an upswing in its fortunes.

Ladybug The cute red coloured beetle whose wings are covered with small black dots is the image that springs before us when someone says, ‘ladybug.’ Their scientific name is, however, Coccinellidae. In Britain and Commonwealth countries, the beetles are com-monly known as ladybirds, while in US they are called ladybugs. The Coccinellidae are considered useful insects, because many of them feed on pests in gardens, agricultural fields and orchards.

A common myth is that the number of spots on the insect’s back indicates its age. That’s wrong! In fact, the underlying pat-tern and colouration are determined by the species and genetics of the beetle, and they develop as the insect matures.

LighthouseMystery lovers are familiar with the staple combination of lighthouse, pirates and secret treasures. Out of the trio, the lighthouse sounds a little eerie, isn’t it? Naturally so, because on a dark night the flame from lighthouse signals something sinister. Or so we think.

Actually, a lighthouse is a big help to maritime pilots at sea or in inland waterways, who are lost. Lighthouse mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbours, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to its expensive maintenance cost and the emergence of modern electronic navigational systems such as strobes.

Lfor... Log cabin A log cabin is a house built from logs. It

is somewhat impermanent, and less so-

phisticated architecturally than a proper

log house. It’s constructed with round

rather than hewn logs, and usually erect-

ed to seek shelter.

two homes

Santa divides his time between Santa Claus Village in Arctic Circle and Santa Claus House in the North Pole City. ‘The Santa Claus Village,’ is in reality, an amuse-ment park, located in Finland. You don’t need to trudge up here only in cold winters to meet Santa Claus, you can visit it in summers too. The place also offers lots of amazing activities with Santa, his elves, and his reindeer, Rudolf. Instead of spending the night at a regular house, you can make yourself comfortable in an igloo! Brr! On the other side of the world, in USA, is ‘The San-ta Claus House’ that has a 50 feet tall Santa standing at the door. There is a small cute bakery too where you can have delicious home-made fudge!

have you sent your mail?Besides the tourists attractions, there is a post office which receives lots and lots of letters. The Santa Claus Village receives almost five lakh letters every year in 13 languages. In the Santa Claus House in North Pole City, you can read the letters sent by children. And, those interested in getting a letter from Santa Claus can order from the websites of Santa Claus Village and Santa Claus House. Imagine a letter from Santa! You can show it off to all your friends!

So pull out your pen and paper and write to Santa!

Are your wish-lists ready? Have you been good and nice? Because the old bearded gentleman with the red sack is on his way!

‘Yeah! Santa Claus! We can hear some of you cheer!’

‘Naah! Santa is not real!’ There are some nay-sayers too.

But, you all have to admit that Santa Claus (also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas and Kris Kringle) spreads cheer and festivity! A Christ-mas cannot be Christmas, if Santa Claus does not come visiting, correct!

Awaiting his arrival, writing wish-lists and letters is all a part of the season’s gaiety. But, once let-ters are written, what does one do next?

“Post them,” some of you chime.“Addressed where?” No answer!Ahah! There are two addresses on which you

can write Santa to. Read on.

A children’s story written in rhyme verse with the illustration by the author.

3. The Gift of Magi and Other Short Stories by o henry

A story of a young couple who try to purchase gifts for Christmas with very little cash. The end has a twist!

1. The Polar Express by Chris van allsburg

One couldn’t select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children’s book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole.

2. The Gift of the Magi and Other Short Stories by o henry

I have always loved the moral of this short story since childhood. It is a classic reminder of the purpose and the feeling of joy that one experiences from giving to others freely.

3. The Christmas

Carol by Charles Dickens

Some songs, customs and stories are so beloved, so familiar that they have become an integral part of our holiday celebrations. It wouldn’t be Christmas without hearing Silent Night and reading of The Christmas Carol.

4. Room for a Little One; A Christmas Tale by martin Waddell I came across this very heart-warming book, Room for a Little One, which epitomises the deepest meaning of Christmas.

5. The Little Match Girl by hans Christian andersen

This book might be enjoyed by 8 and 9 year olds, who are beginning to develop a sense of empathy. A wonderful story full of compassion, love and faith.
