School’s back and so is MADD Canada with our new School Assembly Program, titled In the Blink of an Eye. At the beginning of September, seven MADD Canada Outreach Field Representatives set out on their nation-wide tour, during which they will deliver the presentation to approximately 2,250 schools. “Our School Assembly Program communicates directly with young people and encourages them to think about their perceptions about driving drunk or stoned,” said MADD Canada National President Angeliki Souranis. “We want to educate them on the dangers, and empower them to make safe and responsible decisions to protect themselves and their friends.” A new year of presentations was officially highlighted with a special screening of In the Blink of an Eye for students and staff at Vimy Ridge Academy in Edmonton in September. Joining MADD Canada for the presentation were National Sponsors Allstate Insurance Company of Canada and RTL-Westcan Group of Companies. In the Blink of an Eye tells the story of best friends Gabby and Sarah. One night, as the girls prepare to go to a party, they are joined by Sarah’s boyfriend Dylan, and his friend Asif. Sarah drinks and smokes pot with Dylan and Asif, while Gabby declines. Dylan, anxious to get to the party, decides to drive rather than wait for a cab. After all, he reasons, it’s not far away. His friends strongly object and refuse to get in the car. A very upset Sarah calls 911 to report Dylan, while Asif walks Gabby home. Even though Gabby, Asif and Sarah all do the right thing, a tragic twist of fate ends a friendship and ruins many lives. Thank You for Three Years of Hope and Inspiration I write this, my final National President’s address, with mixed emotions.

There is tremendous pride to have been the voice of this wonderful organization, and good fortune to have worked with so many incredible people who lead and support our mission.

There is both happiness and sadness to have met so many victims and survivors; happiness to know these

courageous and giving individuals, combined with the sadness of knowing that it was heartbreak that brought them to our MADD Canada family.

There is frustration that people still drive impaired, not understanding or not caring about the risk they create.

Mostly though, I feel hope and inspiration. We still have a long way to go before we eliminate this terrible crime. But I have seen the commitment and passion that will deliver us to that goal. Amazing Chapter and Community Leader volunteers bring our message to communities across Canada. Generous donors and sponsors support our mission. Committed law enforcement officers work, day in and day out, to make our communities safe from impaired driving.

Hope was in short supply for me when I reached out to MADD Canada after the death of my son Craig in an impairment-related crash in 2008. In

MADD Canada, I found people who understood my family’s new reality. They spoke my new language. They offered support, and a chance to help prevent this tragedy from becoming reality for others.

It has been a truly rewarding experience. For everything I have put into this, I have received it back a thousand times over. I cannot measure the inspiration I have gained from the Chapter and Community Leader volunteers who are making such a difference in communities across this country. I have seen, over and over again, people who have been so broken by grief and loss but still step forward to ask ‘what can I do’ and ‘how can I help’. Even while dealing with their pain, they want to spare others this same wrenching experience.

I have also seen those volunteers who, while they have not been personally impacted, empathize with our experiences, recognize the importance of our cause and are fully committed to our mission.

It is all of these people who make me so hopeful, indeed confident, that we will achieve our goals.

I also want to acknowledge and thank the National Board of Directors for its excellent leadership and the National Staff for their wonderful support of me over the past three years. We have an outstanding team.

I hand the baton over to a new National President. Patricia Hynes-Coates is dynamic, passionate, motivated and will be a powerful and effective voice for our organization over the next three years. I know that Patricia will be welcomed with open arms, as I was.

Thank you all for this incredible journey of hope, inspiration, support, success and friendship.

Honoured By This Opportunity To Represent MADD CanadaHello everyone. It is an honour and a privilege to be the new National President of MADD Canada. Together with all of you, I am committed to doing everything I can to end the terrible and senseless crime of impaired driving.

I am being very honest when I say that impaired driving was not something my family thought about. Not until a bright sunny August morning in 2013 when my step son, Nicholas Coates, was killed by an impaired driver. He was riding his motorcycle to work. The driver who hit him had been drinking the night before and the morning of the crash.

Nicholas was a son, a step son, a brother, a fiancée, a grandson and a friend. He was a remarkable, kind-

hearted, hard-working young man. He had just started his dream job as a Civil Engineer. He was 27 years old.

When we brought Nicholas to his final resting place, his dad, Terry Coates, and I made a commitment to help end impaired driving. We promised him that we would help bring about changes so that no other family has to suffer as a result of this senseless crime.

We found MADD Canada and became involved with the MADD Avalon Chapter. We led fundraising and awareness efforts for the Nick Coates Car Show and got involved with Project Red Ribbon and Strides

for Change. We spoke to the media and the public about the impaired driving problem. We became part of the Newfoundland and Labrador Public Policy Committee to promote improved laws and sanctions.

My hope for the future – my goal as National President – is that people will realize that impaired driving is a choice, not an accident, and they will make a commitment to never do it. I look forward to communicating MADD Canada’s message at the local, provincial, national and international levels and to advancing important public policy initiatives. Most importantly, I look forward to being a strong voice for victims of impaired driving.

As I look ahead to the next three years, I know I have very big shoes to fill. Like so many others in our organization, I am awed by Angeliki Souranis and the job she has done. Her composure as the national spokesperson for our organization. Her compassion and understanding towards victims and survivors. Her leadership and collaboration with fellow volunteers. Her knowledge and strength on policy issues. I will strive to follow the outstanding example she has set.

Thank you.

Making Strides for Change Across Canada In communities across Canada, supporters came out to help MADD Canada make Strides for Change this summer and fall.

Our annual 5 km walk/run attracted plenty of participants and support as MADD Canada and its Chapters and Community Leaders raised awareness and funds for our programs and services.

Our last issue featured a recap of our MADD Canada PIA Law Strides for Change (GTA) event.

This issue offers a look at just a few of the many Strides for Change events held across the coun-try.

Our sincerest thanks to all the amazing Chapter and Community Leader volunteers, generous sponsors and enthusiastic participants who al-ways make Strides for Change a great success.

Leadership Conference Focuses on Drug-Impaired Driving IssuesChapter and Community leader volunteers came together in late September for MADD Canada’s 2016 National leadership Conference.

With drugged-driving becoming an increasingly larger part of the overall impaired driving problem, and with the Government of Canada’s plans to legalize marijuana, this year’s conference was dedicated specifically to issues related to drug-impaired driving.

Sessions included: an examination of drug culture within the context of legalizing marijuana; a report on a new study by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health on

the effects of marijuana on driving; an exploration of a framework for the legalization of marijuana as developed by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health; and templates for new provincial and federal drug-impaired driving legislation.

Stay tuned for upcoming issues of MADD Matters for detailed information on the sessions and research presented.

Wear Red on November 1st MADD Canada is gearing up for Project Red Ribbon and inviting all Canadians to show their support for our 29th annual campaign by wearing red on November 1, 2016.

Running from November 1, 2016 to January 2, 2017, Project Red Ribbon encourages Canadians to plan ahead for a safe and sober ride home if they’re going to be drinking throughout the holiday season. It’s a message we promote all year long, but it’s especially important over the holiday season when parties and gatherings are plentiful.

Over a million red ribbons will be distributed to the public by MADD Canada Chapters and Community Leaders around the country. The ribbons are tied to keychains, purses, briefcases, backpacks, etc., as a

symbol of the wearer’s commitment to always drive sober. Red ribbons are available through the MADD Canada web site, Chapters and Community Leaders, Allstate Canada offices across the country and participating sponsor outlets.

Anyone who wishes to support Project Red Ribbon with a donation can do so online through the web site, by calling 1-800-665-6233 or by texting “MADD” to 45678 (a $5 one-time donation is added to the donor’s cell phone bill and payable to his or her service provider.) A monthly donation option is also available.

Our 2016 Project Red Ribbon materials feature Dean “DJ” Hancock. The young hockey player was on his way home from a team tryout in the summer of 2014. His parents, Kim and Dean, were travelling in the car behind DJ and arrived on the scene just moments after an impaired driver crossed the centre line and hit his car head-on.

Show Us Your Red Ribbon Spirit!Tie it! To a red ribbon your purse, your backpack, your briefcase, your bike, your car.

Wear it! On November 1st, show your support to MADD Canada’s signature campaign Project Red Ribbon by wearing RED.

Show it! & Share It! Show your spirit and share your pictures on MADD Canada’s Facebook www.facebook.com/maddcanada.ca and Twitter @MADDCanada pages.

Live it! Text “MADD” to 45678 to make a donation to MADD Canada and help save lives.

However, no matter how many crash avoidance and protection features are built into a vehicle, and how many road safety solutions are integrated into the roadway infrastructure, no one is safe when an impaired driver is behind the wheel.

Alcohol ignition interlocks are an essential and highly effective tool for preventing impaired driving. Studies show that over 50% of impaired driving offenders continue to drive even after losing their license. As the only device that can physically prevent an offender from driving while impaired, the ignition interlock is an essential tool for keeping impaired drivers off the roads.

Despite the current effectiveness of ignition interlocks, Alcohol Countermeasure Systems (ACS) continues to test and expand the capabilities of ignition interlock technology to include the use of biometric identifiers, remote monitoring and vehicle tracking.

Test results and violations can be monitored remotely; information can be sent from the device by multiple communication methods or by using ACS’s AlcoTrack monitoring software. Data can

include alcohol level, driver identity, and location of the test so alternate transportation can be arranged in the case of a violation. Integration with mobile technology can allow the vehicle administrator to access the interlock settings remotely and disable the interlock during servicing or in an emergency. The vehicle administrator can also view the results with GPS coordinates in real time.

ACS’ vision is to be a world leader in promoting road safety and preventing impaired driving. Its mission is to continue to research and develop innovative, high quality, and user-friendly products and services to keep people safe while strengthening our commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

As a long-time Gold Technology Sponsor of MADD Canada, and a Presenting Sponsor of the MADD Canada PIA Law Strides for Change (GTA) event, ACS is a generous supporter of MADD Canada’s programs and services aimed at preventing impaired driving and supporting victims/survivors.

MADD Abbotsford hosted a booth at the annual Abbotsford Airshow that draws over 150,000 people. The volunteers were kept busy as the booth was right at the entrance of the airshow this year, and lots of people stopped by to show their support and learn more about MADD Canada. The Fatal Vision Goggles were particularly popular, as adults and kids tried to walk the red ribbon line while wearing them. Thank you to the Abbotsford Airshow for the opportunity to have a presence at the event again this year, and all the great volunteers who came out to help host the booth.

MADD Metro Vancouver hosted a successful and interactive booth at the annual Driediger Farms Market Festival. A great group of volunteers came out to help host the booth and manage our Fatal Vision Goggles display. Our thanks to everyone who came by to support MADD Canada.

MADD Parkland launched its Parkland MADD Youth Project on June 30th. The MADD Youth Project will offer a series of fun events throughout the year to promote responsible choices and to give a voice to the youth in the community. The project is led by Mackenzie Fragoso, who was hit head-on by an impaired driver in 2014. Mackenzie survived the crash but her father and her stepmom were killed. Youth in the Parkland area are welcome to get involved by becoming a member and participating in awareness events.

This memorial bench will serve as a special place for all victims/survivors of impaired driving and the community to visit, reflect and remember. The bench is located at the foot of Dieppe Gardens (Ouellette and Riverside Ave.) on Windsor’s main riverfront. Thank you to everyone who attended the unveiling. A special thank you to local victims/survivors – Margaret Collins, Jennifer Ondejko-Musson and Janice Nord McPhee – for sharing their stories and photos and to representatives from the Windsor Police Service and city officials who were also in attendance. MADD Labrador West had a great turn out for their annual Don’t Drink (or do Drugs) & Drive Motorcade. Although it was a rainy evening, 125 vehicles lined up to show their support for MADD Canada as they motored through the streets of Labrador City.

The Variable Message Sign Campaign is underway in Prince Edward Island. Robert Guth of MADD West Prince was in Charlottetown recently to talk to Paula Biggar, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, about using highway traffic warning signs to display sober driving messaging to the motoring public.

This year’s MADD Atlantic Conference “MADD @ the Alt” (Halifax Stanfield International Airport), was well attended by Chapters across the Region. More than 50 delegates participated in workshops on fundraising, drug-impaired driving, the new Volunteer Screening process, and the always-popular Chapter successes session (titled “You Alt to Know”). Other highlights included a mock Board Meeting, the MADD Amazing Race, the MADD Cumberland Go Kart and the Candlelight Service of Hope and Remembrance. Many thanks to sponsor Northern Pulp for their generous support.

Families and friends gathered at Memorial United Church Grand Falls-Windsor and, later, Centennial Park, for this year’s Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Monument Commemorative Ceremony. Under the sponsorship of Central Funeral Home, two names have been added to the Monument this year. Prior to the service, Atlantic Region Victim Services Manager Gloria Appleby facilitated a sharing group, giving participants an opportunity to tell each other of their loss and offer hope and encouragement to one another.

Over the past several months MADD Canada volunteers in Nova Scotia have been meeting with their MLAs to talk to elected leaders about the importance of introducing new drug-impaired driving legislation. These meetings culminated with a presentation by MADD Canada Chief Executive Officer Andrew Murie to the Liberal Caucus in Halifax. As part of that presentation, Jeannie Landry of MADD Antigonish shared her very compelling story of how a drug-impaired driver took the life of her son Nico Landry-McKenna in November 2011.

MADD Charlotte County hosted a fun afternoon of entertainment at the “Rally In The Valley” Veterans Ride. There were over 100 magnificent bikes to see. The spectacular and sunny day included great food, great music and great company. This yearly event is hosted by the Town of St. George, with MADD Charlotte County named the charity of choice for the past 4 years.

MADD Manitoba Chapters and Community Leader Groups welcomed approximately 300 victims/survivors of impaired driving and other guests to the unveiling of the Manitoba Memorial Monument for Victims of Impaired Driving in late August. Located at the Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery in West St. Paul, the Manitoba Memorial Monument is inscribed with the names of individuals who were killed by impaired drivers. Guest speakers included: provincial and municipal government leaders; police representatives; MADD Canada’s Incoming National President Patricia Hynes-Coates and Margaret Taylor, who founded the first Canadian anti-impaired driving group, Citizens Against Impaired Driving, which later became MADD Manitoba. Congratulations and thank you to MADD Winnipeg President Melody Bodnarchuk, Treasurer Wayne Bodnarchuk and MADD Brandon

President Nikki Boggs for all their hard work on the establishment of this beautiful monument and the organization of a powerful and emotional tribute ceremony.
