“A Game to help us Share The Tradition and Live The Legacy of NWCA,

February 2020.”

About the Cover: What is ? Moving forward into 2020 offers us

opportunities for some “Changes” to our monthly Newsletter Publication. The process

or thing that we use within NWCA to Connect to each other and form a “Connection” is

very important. What is a ? How does this new, modern name, for our monthly

NWCA Publication apply to us? A “Link” can be defined as many things such as: a

“Connection” or a “Communication” or better yet – “a Link is something that enables

communication between people or organizations.” Our “NWCA Connection” has served

us all throughout the last 20 years or so with wonderful information, stories and photos.

We respect this Great Publication and those that have worked to bring its content to

NWCA. We now hope to build on this “Tradition” and “Legacy” with a new publication,

using a new format, titled: The NWCA LINK.

This is the month of love, or so

the calendar tells me.

I love being a member of NWCA dba Military Families Worldwide. Being with you serving our communities

brings me joy. Knowing you are out there making someone’s day a little brighter with cookies, blankets, money

and your time too is heartwarming. Watching each of you grow into your best selves

and helping others do the same is something else that makes me love

NWCA dba Military Families Worldwide. You are easy to love. NWCA is easy to love.

Sometimes life is not so easy to love yet you step in and help people make it through those moments too.

Deployments are hard. PCS moves are tough. Grief, retirement, regret, illness, death, financial worries are all

hard. Going back to school or to a new one can be terrifying. Watching your service member leave is akin to hell

– the emotional cycle of deployment is real. You have skin in the game and that can be frightening. Whatever

challenge you are in currently, or may face soon, is hard. The good news is you do not have to go through a

millisecond of it alone. We are here for each other – for you. Reach out in those tough moments. Please. Don’t

suffer in silence.

Perhaps you need a respite. That idea is, in part, what this year’s national welfare project is about. We are once

again supporting Darkhorse Lodge, a retreat for combat veterans, which is in development. It is located practically

in my backyard here in Springville, Tennessee. Come on over for a visit and let me get you a tour. Gretchen

Catherwood, CEO of Darkhorse Lodge, would love to show off this beautiful retreat in progress and tell you all

about why she and her husband Kirk stepped up to make this happen. For those coming in October, plan on

hearing Gretchen’s tale and Darkhorse Lodge’s progress then.

The scholarship application season is still in full swing. The deadline for ALL scholarships offered by NWCA

and the Scholarship Foundation of NWCA is MARCH 31, 2020. I know there have been some website glitches,

and hopefully by now, those have been worked out.

When in doubt – ask. National Vice President Allison Barnes, Scholarship Director Lois Wilber, Scholarship

Secretary-Treasurer Nancy New or I will get you the information you need – just ask.The National Convention

Chairman Sherry Hutchison and I will have a letter out to you about convention very soon. We just weren’t ready

in time for this publication. She has all kinds of brilliant ideas (probably scathingly brilliant – her favorite kind)

and much to share. It is exciting to try something new and there are plenty of new things coming in October.Last,

but not least, I love our new national publication and hope you do too.

VICE PRESIDENT Allison Barnes 901-896-4883 885 Bass Road [email protected]

Let’s show some Love this month!

How about sending a Valentine card to club members who don’t

get to come to meetings often or haven’t paid their dues yet. Drop a

card to our senior members; maybe to clubs with only 1 or 2 members.

Or, you could say hi to our MAL or chairmen. Seriously, let’s communicate with each

other. Don’t wait until Regional or National conventions to catch up. We have some many ways to

communicate these days; take a little time and reach out. And thank you for all the love you show through

NWCA! Share the tradition, live the legacy. Allison.

The Chaplain’s Corner February. Share some love this month!

Depending on the size of your club you may have both a Corresponding Secretary and a Recording Secretary,

or you may only have a Recording Secretary who does both jobs. So, let’s make taking the

minutes as easy as possible. Ask your president for a copy of her agenda. They will have

most of the items to be covered at the meeting already written out so you can fill in the blanks. Of course, there

will be some information you will have to add. Recommendations should be written exactly as they were

presented. If the recommendation is long and you’re having a problem getting it down, ask for it in writing. Same

with names, your members names are important, be sure to spell them correctly. Most discussion is not included

in the minutes, unless it is something that may be of importance, later, or to clarify an issue for members who are

reading the minutes who may not have been at the meeting. Mention of reports should be made. The report can

be included as an addendum. If your club has a Corresponding Secretary, it is their responsibility to take care of

receiving and sending out mail for your club. Once again, correspondence sent should be well written as it

represents your club.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all. Treat your sister members with love and respect as you want to be treated.

Share the tradition, live the legacy,

Marjie

With February, we are already started into the new year of 2020

with only 335 days left in this year. It is a time for reflection and a

time for optimism for what can be accomplished during the last 335

days. Before we know, we will be celebrating another new year.

Let your Merchandise Chairmen know if there are any other items that you would like to see carried in

merchandise. Roberta Anlage, Merchandise Chairman, has some great ideas for new merchandise but would like

to have your input. It does take time to work up the items for sale, so if there is something you are interested in,

please let us know. Several new items were added last year so be sure to bring some money to Regional

Conventions to purchase some. Linda Christy, Pin Chairman, has been working to get the Pin Price List updated

and is with this LINK. We have, also, been working on a proposal for a

50-year pin, which will be presented to members who have been

an NWCA member for at least 50 years, collectively. It is not too early

to start thinking about Regional Conventions. The Eastern Region Chairmen have already sent out their first

letter with dates, April 24-25, 2020, and initial information. I am sure that the other regions, Central, Northwest

and Southwest, will be sending information on their Conventions soon.

Hey there lovely members! I hope this letter finds everyone happy

and healthy in this new year. Membership is busy trying to plan some

exciting things with the direction of our board. I have attended a few

events and a few meetings in my local area. I have witnessed local

clubs working in the community and spreading the word about

“Military Families Worldwide”. It is good stuff. By the time you read

this, hopefully I will have personally visited a few local schools and

shared our scholarship information. I am looking forward to

membership month.

I would like you to reach out to your community and plan a

Membership drive or a social that includes spouses from

all the branches. It would be so exciting to see how many new members each region can bring in

by regional convention. If you have ideas, please share them with me in an email and I will send it to the media

chair and see if we can share with everyone. It will take a whole club to keep members and build a

membership. Remember to be kind to those around you and reach out to the membership you already

have. Sometimes we focus on all the changes, we think we need, and we forget about the blessings right in front

of us. I will leave you with two thoughts until next month. Be kind to each other. Friendship is so weird...you

just pick a human you’ve met and your like “yep, I like this one!” and you just do stuff with them.

Friendship is not about who you’ve known the longest It’s about who walked into your life, said, “I’m here for

you” and proved it.

Have you sent in your volunteer hours to your respective Regional

Friendships. Friendships throughout NWCA are vital to our

they trust us. This important relationship often helps us build

THE NWCA NATIONAL CONVENTION, 2020

PARIS, TENNESSEE

FIRST LETTER AND INFORMATION, JANUARY 2020

**************************************************************

We are working hard to prepare for NWCA to “Share the love.” To help you plan better for National Convention,

we have a few key details to pass along in this first letter. When are we expecting ya’ll? Well, frankly, come

any time you want to visit us and our little town, we (and they) would love that! However, convention is

scheduled to officially open on Tuesday, October 27, 2020 with Memorial Service and close with the award

banquet on Saturday, October 31, 2020.

You may check-in as early as Monday, October 26th and check-out as late as Monday, November 2nd.

Where are we staying? We will plan and carry out our shenanigans, yeah, I mean sleep at the Quality Inn in

Paris. You can and will make your room reservations directly with the Quality Inn staff via telephone at (731)

642-2838. The Quality Inn is located at: 1510 E. Wood Street, Paris, TN 38242. They are giving us a GREAT

rate; no more than $95/night (e.g. $81 plus taxes and/or fees). At this reduced rate, you may book into a Double

Queen Bedroom, a King room, or a King Study. Maximum occupancy is 3 or 4 persons depending on your room

selection (staff can tell you which you are choosing when you call). This rate is for the room per day no matter

how many folks you share it with (up to maximum occupancy).

The Quality Inn offers you a HOT breakfast every morning of your stay (in main lobby). They also include free

coffee and juice in the main lobby 24 hours a day for guests. Other amenities include Wi-Fi in your rooms, a

single serve coffee pot (it takes special coffee inserts which they will provide you), iron, ironing board, dorm/bar

sized refrigerator and microwave.

We have secured 50 rooms (half of the hotel) which they will hold until September 10th. Once those 50 rooms

have been reserved and/or after the release date of 9/10/18 we cannot guarantee there will be a room available for

you; SO, RESERVE your ROOM EARLY.

This is a two-story hotel with exterior door entry to your rooms and NO ELEVATOR.

Meal menus are still under negotiations; therefore, it will be another month or more before we can offer you a

registration form and full package fee details. When you register, NOTIFY US of any meal related allergies. We

cannot guarantee specific menus based upon preference but will make every effort to accommodate all medical

related menu requests (e.g. vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, other known food related allergies

such as poultry, beef, wheat, berries). We are as bummed about that as you are members. We can tell that your

package fees owed to us will not exceed $100.00 per person. Please note that we are NOT charging or collecting

a registration fee.

Transportation – we are located between Memphis and Nashville; those are your airport choices for flying in

for convention. Both airports are approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours away from Paris. We suggest you get together and

share rental cars/vans or arrange with other members for a ride to convention site if you are flying. WE will NOT

be able to offer airport runs.

Honoring and Loving NWCA and Military Families Worldwide:

“A Game to help us Share The Tradition and Live The Legacy

of NWCA, February 2020”

NWCA is taking care of “Doing Business As, Military Families Worldwide.” Perhaps this month, as

we find ways to Honor our Friends and make New Friends, we need to remember some of the great Traditions

and Legacies we have enjoyed in our Organization. Below is a simple game that will test your knowledge of

the Traditions and Legacies within NWCA. Select the most correct answer, on the right side, to each question

asked on the left side. All answers will be matched only once and all answers will be used. My answers to the

questions will be published in THE NWCA LINK, March 2020 edition. Kim Rumbo, NWCA Publications

Chairman.
