How is a polytechnic different from a university?Polytechnics offer practical hands on learning in the classroom, that can be used directly in a job or industry. At Whitireia you learn skills and concepts to earn a qualification and for most of our programmes you are eligible for StudyLink loans and support.

Whitireia is one of the top polytechnics in New Zealand – RATED HIGHLY for student success by the government.

5 steps to get the most out of a campus visitFirst, decide how and what campus you are going to visit

L There are seven Whitireia campuses in the Wellington region, addresses are on our website

L Programmes often run information evenings, phone us and ask about your interests

L There are many schools programmes, you can get a feel for a subject on campus with some classmates. These are for year 10 and up

L Our Information & Enrolment Centre staff at our Porirua campus are available to answer any questions, provide information sheets and liaise with you about any of our programmes

L There is a careers advice service at Whitireia, you can phone and make a time

L Are you visiting by car, bus or some other way? Parking is free around the Porirua and Kāpiti campuses but its city parking for the Wellington ones

FAQs ?I don’t know what I want to do?This happens to most of us. There are people and places out there that can help you make study and career choices. There are also FREE online interactive tools. Check out www.careers.govt.nz go to the interactive tools or you can clock in to the Career Quest survey and you’ll be on your way. There is also a Careers Consultant at the Porirua campus. You can make an appointment by calling 0800 944 847.

I want to get a job, but I don’t have any qualifications?Whitireia offers many programmes at Levels 1-4. These are made up of programmes created to meet employer and industry needs. Some offer on the job experience.

I want a degree, but I don’t meet the entry criteria?We have foundation level programmes that help build language, literacy and numeracy skills and give you the skills that are necessary for further study or employment. Completing one of our foundation programmes gives you the opportunity to apply for study in one of our degree programmes.

I’m not sure I’ll do well in my studies?You need to start at a level that is right for you. Whitireia offers learning support while studying. You can use this support by yourself or in a group – it’s up to you!

I’m not confident writing, reading or doing maths?That’s ok, our foundation programmes help build your skills in language, literacy and numeracy.

I’m at home with kids, I can’t attend classes!Whitireia has a number of online programmes. Call us, chat to us on facebook or check out www.whitireia.ac.nz. There is a childcare centre at our Porirua campus which you can use for your children while studying here. You do need to pay for this and it does pay to enrol your children early.

I don’t know if I’ll be accepted into the programme?Although you may meet the entry criteria, some programmes are very popular – they fill up quickly. Don’t be disappointed, apply sooner rather than later. Make sure you check closing dates.
