On every college campus, finding a place to call home is crucial to fulfilling students’ academic and social growth. The University of Utah is no exception. With our student population of over 30,000, our hope is that the A. Ray Olpin Union building will be your home away from home.

An important goal of the Union is to complement the students’ academic experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. It is through such opportunities that a real sense of college community is allowed to develop.

In an effort to promote campus and community life, the Union Programming Council (UPC) is proud to provide you with this publication. Your Campus Life is a complete guide to community businesses, services, and on-campus resources.

We hope Your Campus Life provides you with useful information that will further enrich your college experience.

Best of luck from all of us at the A. Ray Olpin Union Building.

BEST STUDy PLACES ON CAMPUS?Marriot Library (West side of campus)Though it is home to handy resources like the Writing Center and dry erase windows, the library is infamous for being a very distracting place to study. If you’re lucky you might find a coveted spot in the George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Grand Reading Room. It’s a very secluded and quiet part of the library and has a great view of the Salt Lake Valley.

Pros: Writing Center, Grand Reading Room, study group rooms, Dry-Erase Windows, Printing Center.Cons: Noisy, good chance of running into friends, distracting.

Crimson Lounge (South-East corner of the Union)The Crimson Lounge is a great place to relax while getting some studying in. Fully furnished with tables, desks, and artwork, this study spot is perfect for solo studying. While there is little space in the Crimson Lounge, it rarely fills up because many students haven’t yet discovered this hidden gem.

Pros: Quiet, comfortable, good view of campus.Cons: Limited space.

Basement Dining Room (Under Union Food Court)Need to eat to get your brain juices flowing? Grab a bite to eat at Dining Services’ food court and grab a booth in the basement floor of the Union! There are plenty of booths and tables for your study group or a solo study session. It’s also located right next door to a computer lab in case you need to look something up after eating!

Pros: Great place to eat while studying, plenty of room for study groups.Cons: Limited space.

LDS Institute (South side of campus)From couches to large tables, the Institute has plenty of space to get some good studying in. The Institute also offers great deals on lunch specials in case you wanted to grab a bite to eat before studying.

Pros: Quiet, plenty of space, discounted lunch specials.Cons: Far from heart of campus, need to acquire Wi-Fi password.

STUDy TIPS1) Go Somewhere you Know your Friends Won’t Be: We have all lied to ourselves and said that if we study with our friends we’ll get a lot done but we all know that isn’t true. If you plan on getting anything done, disappear for a few hours and don’t tell your friends where you are. They might find you and even worse, distract you!

2) Leave your Phone At Home: You can try to justify why you need your phone while you study, but none of those reasons are any good. Candy Crush can wait, you’ve got a test tomorrow!

3) Study With Students From Class: Never underestimate the power of your peers, especially when working through a difficult problem set or reading assignment. Dividing and conquering is an effective way to reduce your workload -- and to make sure you understand the material. You might even make a friend in the process.

4) Make your Own Flash Cards: Sometimes the best habits are the ones we’ve used forever. Flash cards are oldies but goodies –- writing notes and definitions more than once will help imprint information in your memory, and the cards are a great way to develop and use mnemonic devices and associative phrases.

5) Get Plenty of Sleep: A tired mind is a slow mind. You’re better off going to bed at a reasonable time and waking up early than you are staying up all night cramming the night before a test.

6) Go To Class!: This one might seem obvious, but large lectures and early start-times often make class feel, shall we say, optional. The best way to prepare for tests is to attend classes and participate. You’ll have already begun the process of reviewing and will know what to expect on the exam, especially if you haven’t done the reading.

7) Time Management: The only thing worse than having a deadline is missing a deadline. Stay organized and cut down on procrastination and your work load will feel much more manageable.

8) Change Study Spaces: Although some people swear by the library, cognitive scientists suggest that alternating study spaces is a more effective way to retain information. Memory is affected by location, and changing your study locales increases the likelihood of remembering what you’ve learned.

So you have a date? You’ve got the date, but now you’re wondering what there is to do. Whatever your interests are, there’s something to entertain anyone and everyone. Whether you’re into the traditional romantic date or something a little more out-of-the box and adventurous, we’re here to show you what Salt Lake City has to offer all you couples out there.

Adventure-SeekersSalt Lake City is the prime location for fulfilling your date’s need for thrills and adventures. With the Wasatch Front as your playground, there are plenty of new places to explore. Cross something off your bucket list together and hike the Block U, located north of campus near the University of Utah Hospital. If you both are still feeling a little bold, stop by Heart of Gold Tattoos and stock up on your body art together.

After an adventure-packed day, visit Desert Edge Brewery, located at Trolley Square, for a bite to eat. For those of you 21 and up, top off your date with some schooling at Desert Edge Brewery Beer School, a one-evening class that involves a guided brewery tour, sampling eight beers, and a four-course meal.

ArtisticFor all you art lovers out there, Salt Lake City is packed with a population that thrives on art and culture. The Utah Museum of Fine Arts (UMFA), located right on campus, holds over 18,000 different art objects. It’s free for students with your UCard, and there are special exhibitions that are constantly changing making every visit a new experience.

After some inspiration, head to Color Me Mine at Foothill Village to get artsy with your date and paint each other some ceramic mugs. Once dinnertime comes around, it’s time to get some rolls rolling by checking out Rice Sushi Bar for some sushi-making lessons.

RomanticSometimes, it all comes down to creating a date straight out of a fairytale. If you want to kick up the romance, start your date off with a couples massage at Knead A Massage, located in Foothill Village. Bring your UCard and receive $5 off your massage.

After some relaxation, pick up some goods for a lunchtime picnic at Red Butte Garden, A non-profit botanical and ecological center provided by University of Utah. Picnic in one of the “Wayside” resting areas or in the Secret Garden. Don’t forget to explore what the gardens have to offer, including themed gardens like a children’s garden.

After a romantic stroll in the gardens, head downtown and rent out a GREENbike, Salt Lake City’s non-profit Bike Share program. Cruise through the city together and take in all the sights and city lights.

Sports FanaticsIf you and your date are huge sports fanatics, try checking out any of the University of Utah’s athletic teams. From football to gymnastics to basketball, there’s always an athletic event to support. Scope out sports schedules and more information at utahutes.cstv.com.

After your competitive spirit has been fueled, have a little one-on-one bowling tournament with your date at the Crimson Commons bowling alley, located on campus on the first floor of the A. Ray Olpin Union building. If bowling isn’t your thing, there’s also billiards, and an X-Box center.

Once you’ve built your appetite, take TRAX over to Squatters Pubs and Beers. You want a hamburger and fries, your date wants a salad, Squatters has it all! From buffalo burgers to an Ahi Spring Roll Salads, Squatters’ menu has a wide variety of options from which to choose.

HIKING TRAILSThe Living Room (Easy/Moderate)The Living Room trail leads to a ridge overlooking the Salt Lake Valley above Red Butte Garden and Arboretum, where people have arranged flat slabs of sandstone into chairs, sofas, tables, and ottomans for hikers to relax while they take in the view. Directions: From the intersection with Foothill Drive, head east on Sunnyside Avenue. Go left onto Arapeen Drive to Chipeta Way. Go right on Chipeta Way, turn right onto Colorow Drive. Follow Colorow Drive around to the trailhead by the side of the road. At the trailhead, the trail heads east into scrub oaks toward the Shoreline Trail. There are small patches of poison ivy before the Shoreline Trail, so keep a watchful eye out. At .25 miles you arrive at the Shoreline Trail; go right. Follow the trail south and watch for a trail split. Both trails are wide and well-used. Take the left split. Not very far along the trail you see another wide trail on the left; take it heading north. This trail leads into George’s Hollow. At the mouth of George’s Hollow are many trail splits and it’s confusing as to which one is correct. All you really need to do is stay on the trail to the right, which follows the drainage of George’s Hollow for a while, then veers left for the ridgeline.

Dog Lake(Moderate)You can reach this scenic lake from a trailhead in Big Cottonwood Canyon. This is a moderately difficult hike through a beautiful forest to a lake in a scenic meadow. Directions: The hike begins at the Mill D Trailhead, about 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon. Several trails begin here. The Dog Lake trail starts from the north side of the road. It is a well-marked trail that heads up the side of the mountain in a northeast direction.

Bells Canyon(Easy to Difficult)Bell Canyon, also known as Bell’s Canyon or Bells Canyon, is a circular, glacier-carved canyon adjacent to Little Cottonwood. It’s accessed from two different trailheads near the entrance to Little Cottonwood Canyon. The canyon offers a number of options to hikers, including two short, easy routes to Lower Bell Canyon Reservoir, and more strenuous hikes to a set of waterfalls and Upper Bell Canyon Reservoir. Lower Bell Canyon Reservoir is appropriate for beginners and children, the lower waterfall is a strenuous intermediate hike, and the upper reservoir is a strenuous all-day hike.Directions: The trailhead is located at about 10245 South on Wasatch Blvd. It is clearly signed.

Ensign Peak(Easy)Ensign Peak is a prominent small mountain peak at the north end of the Salt Lake Valley, above the State Capitol building. From the top, you have marvelous views out over the Salt Lake Valley and Great Salt Lake.Directions: The trailhead is at the top of a residential area above the Utah capitol building. From downtown Salt Lake City, drive State Street north to the capitol, fork right and follow the road around to the northeast. It becomes East Capitol Boulevard. Follow it up the hill to the north and then turn left onto North Sandrun Road. Follow that road west to the LDS church house. The trailhead is in the back of the church parking lot, next to Ensign Vista Drive.

Donut Falls(Easy)Donut Falls is a popular family trail about nine miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon near the Jordan Pines picnic area. The trail is relatively short and easy though a little rugged, leading to a waterfall where Big Cottonwood Creek goes though a doughnut-shaped hole in the rock.Directions: Drive about 9 miles up Big Cottonwood Canyon, to the signed Mill D Trailhead. From the Mill D Trailhead, drive or hike up the paved, gated Mill D South Fork Road, past the Jordan Pines picnic area. After about .75 miles, the Mill D South Fork Road becomes dirt road. After another 200 yards you’ll find the small Donut Falls trailhead parking area.

Mount Olympus(Difficult)Mount Olympus is a prominent 9,026 foot-peak on the east side of the Salt Lake Valley. Views from the summit are considered to be some of the best in the region.Directions: The trailhead is located on the east side of Wasatch Boulevard. From 4500 South, drive south on Wasatch Boulevard for about 1.6 miles to the parking area. A sign identifies the parking lot as the Mount Olympus Trailhead.

Grandeur Peak(Moderate)The summit of Grandeur peak is 8299 feet above sea level. The peak can be climbed year round by hikers of all abilities. Directions: The summit is accessible by two different routes. The easiest and most popular trail is Church Fork, which is accessed from Millcreek Canyon. The second and slightly more challenging route is the West Ridge, which is accessed form Wasatch Boulevard.
