Christmas Traditions

land.

It is important that three spices are used in Mince Pies - cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to signify the three gifts given to Christ by the Magi.

Christmas Stockings

There are several legends relating to the origin of the tradition of hanging a Christmas stocking. One such legend tells the story of a very poor man with three beautiful daughters. He had no money and was worried what would happen to them after his death. Saint

Nicholas heard about his plight and wanted to help but knew that the man would not accept charity. He decided to help in secret. He waited until everyone was asleep and crept down the chimney. He had a bag of gold coins for each girl. He was looking for somewhere to put the three bags and noticed that they had each hung their stockings over the mantelpiece for drying. He put one bag in each stocking and off he went. When the girls and their father woke up the next morning, they found the bags of gold coins and were overjoyed.

Christmas Crackers

Christmas crackers were invented by Thomas Smith in 1846. On a trip to Paris he came across the “Bon-Bon” - a sugared almond wrapped in tissue paper with a twist at each end. He decided to sell similar sweets in England in the run up to Christmas. In the early 1850s, Thomas came up with the idea of including a motto in with the sweets. As they were mainly bought by men as gifts for their lady, the mottos were simple love poems. The banger was added in about 1860 and the paper hat in the early 1900s. By the end of the 1930s, the love poems were replaced by jokes or limericks.

There are so many traditions associated with Christmas but where did they originate from? Angela Owen investigates.

Christmas Cards

The first Christmas card was created in 1843 by John Calcott Horsely. His friend, a wealthy business man by the name of Sir Henry Cole wanted a professional card that he could proudly send to his friends and acquaintances to wish them a Merry Christmas. A 1000 cards were made and sold for one shilling.

Interesting fact: In Victorian times, postmen were often called “Robins” because their uniforms were red. This is why Victorian cards usually showed a robin delivering the Christmas post.

Mince Pies

Mince Pies became a regular part of Christmas as far back as Tudor times (16th century.) Back then they were coffin or cradle shaped and they contained shredded meat as well as dried fruit. The crusaders from the Holy Land had returned with spices and it was decided that Christ’s birth would be celebrated with spices from his home

Community News

When local resident Natalie Barratt lost both her grandparents to Cancer, she was determined to help raise funds to help others.

She came up with the idea of putting together a 1950s style pin-up calendar and was overwhelmed with the response and support she received.

Natalie told Your Canvey: “After I came up with the idea, I then spent the next few months planning everything and calling and emailing hundreds of people asking for help. The response was amazing and I was overwhelmed by what people donated to us, mostly their time and skills. managed to get

a photographer, stylists, hair and make up artists, models, calendar designer and venues all for free. I also found two companies to give us the outfits for the shoot.

The photo shoot went without a hitch and the results were fantastic. Everyone had a different pose and theme and let their personality shine through in their photo. The designer then put it all together and gave us a calendar that was better than we ever imagined.”

An official launch party was held at the Oysterfleet Hotel & Restaurant in November and sales of the calendar are now underway.

Please help support this fantastic cause by purchasing the Essex Girls calendar. They cost £8 each or 2 for £15. To purchase a copy e mail [email protected]. You can also visit the Facebook page by searching for “Essex Calendar Girls”

Canvey History

A look at Christmases Past on Canvey Island

Christmas was always a community affair on Canvey Island as these three photographs show.

1. This photograph, courtesy of Rod Bishop and www.canveyisland.org was taken at the Kynochs Club Christmas Party in 1948. The Kynochs Club was located in what was known as “Hartfield Parade,” opposite where the War Memorial Hall is now. The club was originally owned by Charlie Neil, who owned the bookmakers and then sold to Bill Adams who also owned the Canvey Club.

2. Courtesy of Grace Scantlebury, this photograph shows a Christmas event at the Rainbow Club which was owned by her father Robert (Bob) Helliker. The Rainbow Club was based in Larup Avenue and Bob took over the club after the Rendez-vous Club that he also owned was destroyed by fire in 1930.

Grace remembers how her father would go fishing for eels, winkles and cockles that her mother would cook and serve over the bar.

3. Finally, this photograph courtesy of Peter Beckford and www.canveyisland.org is from a

Canvey Island Methodist Church

party circa 1960. Peter is in the 2nd row, 3rd from the right. Do you recognise anyone else in this photo?

Off the field there are plenty of events going on, the club held a Cockney Night on Saturday 19th November which included Pie and Mash, Jellied Eels and of course some great Chaz and Dave sing along music and also staged a Police Charity Match between Castle Point and Rochford in aid of the “Domestic Abuse Silent Witness” charity. Rochford were the winners with several hundred pounds being raised for the charity.

On December 11th the Club is holding a Christmas Market starting at 12 noon. There will be a wide range of stalls in attendance along with Owl Wise and of course Father Christmas in his Grotto. Entry is free so why not pop along and join us for a Christmas drink in the bar or a glass of mulled wine. Please refer to the advert on page 41 of this edition of Your Canvey for more details.

Last month I spoke about the great efforts of our sky diver Bill (Diddy) Dorrington. Well, another fantastic effort from another Canvey supporter Mitch Easterford who is our player John Easterfords father. Mitch travelled to Nepal to take on the famous Island Peak to raise money for the RNLI. Heavy snowfall prevented Mitch and his team reaching the top but they did climb 20,000 feet before being forced back and raised £1,300.00 for the RNLI. Here is a picture of Mitch proudly holding the Canvey Island FC scarf at Everest Base Camp. What a fantastic experience and achievement, well done Mitch.

Please refer to our website for further event details and do not forget to pop along to the Club on Boxing Day when we take on local Canvey rivals Concord Rangers followed by AFC Hornchurch on New Years Eve Saturday 31st December.

Merry Christmas and A

Happy New Year from

everyone at Canvey Island FC.

Cups, Cups Glorious Cups! The past few week's has seen our fixtures dominated by cup competitions and at the time of writing we remain unbeaten in them all.

Two wins in the FA Trophy, a competition that we have great history in, against Hendon and Grays Athletic, a win in the Ryman League Cup against Ware and a victory in the Essex Senior Cup against FC Claction. Sadly by comparison our league form has not been so good with losses against local rivals Billericay and against Hendon and a draw away at Cray Wanderers. All three games were against top of the table contenders so I am sure we will soon be back to winning ways in the league.

The next round of the FA Trophy has seen us drawn away at Conference South side Hampton and Richmond. A tough game but a very winnable one, it cannot come quick enough as the prize in the next round could be a draw against one of the big Conference National sides such as Luton, Wrexham or Stockport.

December in History

5th December 1901

On this day, Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago. His father, Elias Disney was an Irish-Canadian and his mother, Flora Call Disney, a German-American. Walt was one of five children - four boys and a girl.

Raised on a farm near Marceline, Missouri, Walt became interested in drawing at an early age and began selling sketches to his neighbours when he was only seven years old. Walt began his career as an advertising cartoonist in 1920 when he created and marketed his first original animated cartoons before later perfecting a new method for combining live-action and animation.

In August 1923, Walt Disney left Kansas City for Hollywood with $40 in his pocket, a few drawing materials and a completed animated and live-action film. His brother Roy was already in California and they pooled their resources, borrowed an additional $500 and constructed a camera stand in their uncle’s garage. They soon received an order from New York for their first “featurette” and the brothers began their production operation.

Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 and the rest, as they say, is history!

8th December 1980

On the night of 8 December 1980, world famous rock star John Lennon was shot four times in the back (the fifth shot missed) by Mark David Chapman who had apparently been incensed by a remark Lennon had made about being “Bigger than Jesus.”

Earlier in the day, Lennon had autographed a copy of his album Double Fantasy for Chapman outside the building where he lived - The Dakota in New York City. After spending several hours with his wife, Yoko Ono at nearby recording studios, Lennon returned to the Dakota where Chapman was still waiting. He fired five bullets in quick succession and Lennon’s life slipped away as he was held in the arms of his wife.

Due to his high profile, Lennon’s murder was considered by some as an assassination. His remains were cremated but his wife chose not to hold a funeral. In the months following his death, sales of both his solo music and that with the Beatles soared all over the world.

Chapman went to trial and pleaded guilty to murder in June 1981. He is currently serving a life sentence and has been denied parole every two years since 2000.

A Christmas Story - By John Steels

Hi, it’s me …. Me the mouse! Or, as my friends call me, “The Christmas Mouse!” …. the Christmas Mouse because I was there

– I WAS!

Remember the baby in the manger? “Long time ago in Bethlehem,” I was there on His pillow or rather, He was on mine! Actually, I was just underneath the pillow. Can you imagine if Joseph or Mary had seen me? I know they were nice people, VERY nice people, BUT a mouse on your baby’s pillow! Anyway, as I sat quietly, very quietly, I don’t know how He did it – just a baby – but He spoke to me. Not out loud or in words

but He spoke to me!

Why me? I don’t know – perhaps He thought I was squeaky clean? In a way, I wish He hadn’t because I then knew what THEY should have known – IF they had read their Scriptures! Well, they did read them – learnt them off by heart actually – but did they ever listen, really listen? Who am I to talk, I’d not thought about such things for years. Of course, I knew about them. I’d been taught about them by my mum and dad when I was

little.

He told me, whispered in my little mouse ear, that it was time for action. …. “Never stop teaching my children and proclaiming the Good News.” HIS children, He was only a baby Himself but what more could I do? So,

I tell my story to those who will listen!

After a while, I slipped away to get some

mouse food and as I looked back I thought,

“Wow – what a picture THAT would make!”

The Baby in a manger, surrounded by Cows,

Sheep, Mary & Joseph and, if you look very

closely, me – Me the mouse! (I told you I

was there) …. I was there at the start of the

world’s greatest adventure!

Author’s Note: Did you see the Mouse in the

Manger with Baby Jesus? (Have another look)

Community News

The Canvey Island Distaff club were very pleased to present B.O.P.H. of Canvey with a cheque for £2,600 at their meeting last Monday.

The Distaff Club is made up of 55 members and I am sure they won't mind it mentioned that most of them are pensioners, but they manage to raise money each year for local good causes.

Every year, the club’s elected Chairman chooses a charity that they would like to support and this year’s outgoing Chairman, Pauline Hook, decided on

Business Opportunities for the

Physically Handicapped, known as B.O.P.H that is based on Charfleets Industrial Estate, Canvey Island.

Founder of the Charity Mrs. Joan Lythgoe attended the ceremony and is pictured with

Pauline Hook receiving the cheque.

For more information about the work of B.O.P.H visit www.boph.org.uk

For all kinds of legal matters (personal and business), we offer

free 35 minutes free consultation. We open late on Tuesday

evenings until 7pm and also offer Saturday appointments. We

have Skype conference facility plus a ground floor office to suit

individual needs.

Fish Spa Opens New Beauty Room Following the success of her Fish Pedicure Spa - Sweet Feet, Salon owner Jenny Sullivan has expanded the business by opening a brand new Beauty Room.

Sweet Feet opened it’s doors as the first Fish Pedicure Spa on Canvey Island in July this year and has proved a great success with customers of all ages. Gurra Ruffa Fish are naturally found in hot spring pools in Turkey and the Middle East. transferring infection is extremely low for healthy clients when spas adhered to strict codes of cleanliness.” Jenny assures all her clients that the highest standards of hygiene are adhered to in the salon at all times.

“The new beauty room is the next phase in our business expansion” says Jenny and we hope that people will come along and try out the fantastic range of treatments we can now offer.” The treatments on offer include Gelish Nail Polish, Spray Tanning,
