America

Halloween still maintains its highest level of

popularity in North America. Every year, 65%

of Americans decorate their homes and offices

for Halloween...a percentage exceeded only by

Christmas.

Austria

In Austria, some people will leave bread, water

and a lighted lamp on the table before retiring

on Halloween night. The reason for this is that

it was once believed that such items would

welcome the dead souls back to earth on a night

which, for the Austrians, was considered to be

brimming with strong cosmic energies.

Belgium

Belgians believe that it is unlucky for a black

cat to cross one‟s path and also unlucky if it

should enter a home or travel on a ship. The

custom in Belgium on Halloween night is to

light candles in memory of dead relatives.

Canada

Modern Halloween celebrations in Canada

began with the arrival of Scottish and Irish

immigrants in the 1800s. Jack O'Lanterns are

carved and the festivities include parties, trick

or treating and the decorating of homes with

As one of the world's oldest holidays, Halloween is still celebrated today in several countries around the globe.

pumpkins and corn stalks.

Czechoslovakia

In Czechoslovakia, chairs are placed by

the fireside on Halloween night. There

is one chair for each living family

member and one for each family

member's spirit.

France

Unlike most nations of the world,

Halloween is not celebrated by the

French in order to honour the dead and

departed ancestors. It is regarded as an

“American” holiday in France and was

virtually unknown in the country until around

1996.

Germany

In Germany, people put away their knives on

Halloween night because they do not want to

risk harm befalling the returning spirits.

Hong Kong

The Halloween celebration in Hong Kong is

known as “Yue Lan” (Festival of the Hungry

Ghosts) and is a time when it is believed that

spirits roam the world for twenty-four hours.

Some people burn pictures of fruit or money

at this time, believing these images would

reach the spirit world and bring comfort to the

ghosts.

Sweden

In Sweden, Halloween is known as “Alla

Helgons Dag” and is celebrated from October

31 until November 6. As with many other

holidays, “Alla Helgons Dag” has an eve

which is either celebrated or becomes a

shortened working day. The Friday prior to

All Saint‟s Day is a short day for universities

while school-age children are given a day off.

“Before the Second World War, most fire

services were manned by volunteers who

received no payment at all. Canvey Island had

such a fire brigade.

In the late 1920s, there was a club known as

“The Rendez-Vous Club” on the Island that

met in an old army type hut made of timber.

One Saturday afternoon, when the Southend

Carnival was in progress, a fire started in the

club that completely gutted the building.

Benfeet Fire Brigade were at the carnival and

as the tide was in, (this was before the bridge

was built) no help could get onto the Island.

This event confirmed the need for Canvey to

have it‟s own fire service. The new offices for

the Canvey Island Urban District Council

were planned and were to include a fire

station and an ambulance station. In the

meantime, the council asked for volunteers

who were interviewed at the existing council

office, a bungalow called “The Lawns” on the

end of Gafzelle Road - an unmade road at the

time.

The men chosen were: Captain - Harry

Benwell, First Officer - Bill Barsby, Engineer

- Harry Gaylard and Firemen - George Gilbey,

Canvey resident, Janet Dolling, has kindly shared with us her late father, Bill Beaver’s, story of Canvey’s First Fire Brigade.

George Harvey, David Ricketts, Jack

Maley, Frank Farringdon, Charlie

Brown, Bill Sharp and myself.

Our equipment was a builder‟s

barrow and a ladder - leant to us by

Frank the Builder and we used to

borrow the hose, standpipe and key

from the British Legion. When the

new Council Offices were completed,

there was an ambulance station and

fire station with a recreation room.

We used a van until the new fire

engine arrived.

We were all kitted out with uniforms

and brass helmets with the Captain and First

Officer wearing silver helmets. We had a drill

every Thursday night and our enthusiasm

more than made up for our lack of

experience.

The method of calling out the fire brigade

was by the firing of a maroon. This caused

me some problems as at the time, the

bungalow where we lived had asbestos lined

walls. There were occasions when one of my

three children would turn over in bed and

bump against the wall waking up thinking it

was the maroon. I have rushed to the fire

station only to find it in total darkness!

We had a club and we were given a room in

the back of a bungalow. We had a licence to

sell liquor and cigarettes and would play

billiards and darts against local teams. We

really enjoyed the social side of our fire

brigade and at Christmas had the most

wonderful children‟s parties.

Of course, in 1939 at the outbreak of war, the

Canvey Island voluntary fire brigade was

taken over by the AFS. I left and served as a

professional fire fighter during the war at

Shell Haven Oil Refinery.

Flood Sirens

Essex County Council is proposing to remove

all the flood warning sirens from their coastline

- this will include all of those on Canvey. We

recommend that any residents who wish to

comment on this matter write, with some

urgency, to the Chief Executive, Essex County

Council, County Hall, Chelmsford, Essex CM1

1LX. This decision is to be made very soon - so

please don't delay.

Thank You. Brian Wood

Canvey Town Centre

For the last three months we have been fully

engaged on the regeneration of the Town

Centre. This important document will be

ratified soon: we are drawing up our

recommendations to the Cabinet in November.

As a Party we have fought hard in the Policy

groups to get what residents want. For those

that took the time to visit the regeneration shop

in the Knightswick Centre, thank you for your

input & for those who have not yet visited - it's

not too late to have your say. The general

feeling of residents is that you want the Town

regenerated, it is looking sad but as the

document at this stage is still confidential, we

are limited to what we can tell you. Please be

assured that we are fighting for everything

on your behalf.

In a few months all be revealed as it were but

one thing I can promise you is - we are driving

a hard bargain! We will not accept

anything that is not of a very high

standard. We will keep you informed of course.

Regards, Cllr Neville Watson (Winter

Gardens Ward)

Democracy?

At Full Council on 28th September we

will be calling for CPBC to change from the

current Cabinet system and return to

Committee. Too many major decisions are

being made by Cabinet without any chance of

debate and input from all elected Members.

Strict rules prohibit members from asking

more than one question at Cabinet and

decisions are signed and sealed without any

consultation. We will keep you informed but

we hope that CPBC will bring back

democracy and remove the Cabinet system as

soon as possible.

ATC

The ATC on Canvey recently took part in the

Battle of Britain Parade & Remembrance

service for our brave Airmen. They also led

the march for the Dedication of Standards

Service for the Royal British Legion. On both

occasions they looked brilliant and with their

new equipment (which thanks to generosity

from Canvey residents in recent fund raising,

they had been able to purchase) they were a

fantastic sight and made everyone feel very

proud.

They have also won a competition for the

best turned out unit so “Congratulations” to

them all. Fund raising continues of course

and thanks to all those who have been

involved. If anyone is interested in joining

the ATC they are looking for new intake - so

please contact them at their hall in

Runnymede Road or you can contact Cllr

Neville Watson for information.

From the Dug-out.

We have enjoyed an indifferent start to life in

the Ryman Premier Division. In the first

month of the season we have learnt a lot about

both ourselves and the unforgiving nature of

the league.

Virtually every individual mistake we have

made has led to us conceding a goal and this

has already cost us in terms of results. Teams

in this division have the quality to capitalise

on the smallest mistake or lapse in

concentration. From the eleven goals that we

have conceded so far, at least six have

materialised from our mistakes. Consequently,

we have only taken eight points from the first

six games. I say „only‟ because I honestly

believe that our performances have warranted

at least twelve points. In all the games, apart

from Lowestoft, we have given a good

account of ourselves and looked more than

capable of being competitive at this level.

However, if you don‟t get it right at the

business end, in both boxes, you won‟t win

football matches.

Unfortunately in the first four games, the

individual mistakes and the fact that we had

not been clinical in front of goal cost us.

However, a week is a long time in football

and the response since the Lowestoft game

has been excellent. The character and self

belief we have showed in the last three games,

but particularly the Croydon Athletic game,

has been fantastic and suggests that we have

the ingredients to be successful again this

year.

A lot of people devalued that result,

suggesting that Croydon were in turmoil due

to the match fixing allegations made against

their chairman. However, anyone that watched

that game would have seen that the Croydon

players and management were highly

motivated to win the match, because as we

know now, it would be their last game

together as a group. The fact that we were

able to match their desire and commitment as

well as showing the confidence to get the ball

down and pass it, holds us in good stead for

the challenges to come.

That performance is certainly our „bench

mark‟ now and one that we will need to

replicate game in, game out if we are to be

successful this year. Certainly over the last

three games we have looked more of an

attacking force, playing with a good tempo

and lots of movement in the final third. To

score eight goals in the last three games has

been pleasing, as teams that get promoted to

this level, notoriously find it difficult to score

goals.

We know that at this level the difference

between success and failure is so small and if

we can keep playing with freedom and cut out

the individual errors then I think we will be

just fine. We are certainly going to need big

characters and bundles of mental toughness to

overcome the challenges that this league

presents week in, week out.

Danny Cowley

On 21st September, the Canvey Island branch of Breathe Easy was officially launched at a well attended meeting at the Paddocks.

The Canvey Island branch of “Breathe Easy”

was officially launched on 21st September and

aims to offer local residents affected by

breathlessness the opportunity to meet for

support.

One in 7 people are affected by breathlessness

and many of the more severe suffers can be

isolated and misunderstood. The launch

meeting was attended by local MP Rebecca

Harris, Councillor Ray Howard, Castle Point‟s

Mayor and a leading consultant from Southend

Hospital. They were joined by local residents,

representatives of local businesses and members

of other local Breathe Easy groups. During the

meeting, a cheque for £500 was presented by

the Canvey Rotary Club which will help the

charitable group cover costs for the coming year

including rent.

The British Lung Foundation runs the Breathe

Easy charity and local support groups have been

set up throughout the UK. The support group

Clair Evans, Development Officer at

area the opportunity to make friends

It seems like no time at all since the new school term began and already the October half term holiday is looming!

Like many parents, I always find October Half

Term the hardest break to plan for as there‟s no

guarantee of what the weather will be like.

However, planning is the key to a successful

break and here are a few ideas of how to keep

the kids happy this half term.

A Day in The Past

A day out with the children doesn‟t have to

include Theme Parks or indoor play areas - a

trip into History can be just as much fun.

Southend’s Central Museum and

planetarium - Making Myths & Legends

There are some wonderful half term activities

planned at Southend‟s Central Museum and

planetarium including storytelling, puppeteers,

face painting craft activities and special

planetarium shows. Activities are being held

throughout half term week and are free. For

more information call 01702 434449 or visit

www.southendmuseums.co.uk.

Audley End House & Gardens

If you are happy to travel a little further for

your day out in history, about an hour and

half‟s drive away is Audley End House and

Gardens, one of England‟s grandest stately

homes. There is plenty to do for the children

including a brand new themed play area. Half

Term week is “Game Week” - marvel as you

watch Mrs Crowcombe – Audley End‟s

resident Cook – make the most of the

hunting season with her amazing recipes.

opening times and directions visit

A Day at the Farm

Barleylands Farm Park & Craft Village

Half term is Spooky Week at Barleylands

with activities every day between 10am and

4pm. There will be cooking activities

between 11am and 2pm - telephone 01268

be able to make Pumpkin Soup, Spooky

Biscuits, Yummy half term cup cakes, Scary

Face Pizzas and Autumn Muffins. There will

also be spooky craft activities in the

Discovery Centre. For more information

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring......

Vi-Bowl, Canvey Seafront

Some days, the weather is just so terrible

that an indoor activity is the only answer.

Canvey Island Football Club keep us updated with the latest news.

At the time of writing, you could describe our

season as getting off to a steady start with 2

wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats. The highlight has

been a 3-0 away win at local rivals AFC

Hornchurch with, unusually, a hat trick of

penalties - all scored by our midfielder Rob

King.

We also had a good 4-1 home win in the 1st

Qualifying Round of the FA Cup against

Newport Pagnell Town. This now sees us

playing Whitstable Town at home in the 2nd

Qualifying Round and hopefully we can

report on another good result in next month‟s

issue. The FA Cup is the biggest competition

any of our players will ever play in and

Canvey FC has a great history in the

competition with wins over football league

clubs Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium and

Port Vale away in a replay after drawing at

home. The highlight was surely a home win

against Northampton Town in 2001/2 which

was screened live on BBC‟s Match of the Day

and was watched by 5 million TV viewers and

a full house at Park Lane. We were in the hat

Christopher Robin & his stuffed bear

Edward - Prince of Wales - unofficial Royal Patron of the

Dinner Jacket

1st October 1843

The News of the World was first published in

London by John Browne Bell. It was the

cheapest newspaper of it‟s time, priced at just

three pence, and targeted newly literate working

classes. It quickly established itself as a source

of titillation, shock and criminal news. Despite

being dismissed as a "scandal sheet" it soon

established itself as the most widely read

Sunday paper with initial sales of around

12,000 copies a week.

10th October 1886

The dinner jacket made its first appearance in

public on this date when it was worn at the

Tuxedo Park Country Club in New York. Henry

Poole & Co. (Savile Row's founders), created a

short smoking jacket for the then Prince of

Wales (later Edward VII) to wear to informal

dinner parties. (see photo above) The story goes

that the Prince fancied a lady by the name of

Cora Potter so he invited her husband, James

Potter, a rich New Yorker, to Sandringham

house, his Norfolk hunting estate.

When Potter asked the Prince's dinner dress

recommendation, he sent Potter to Henry

Poole & Co., in London. On returning to

New York, Potter's dinner suit proved so

popular at the Tuxedo Park Club that the

club men copied him and soon made it their

informal dining uniform.

12th October 1948

Today, the first Morris Minor family car

was built at Cowley in Oxford. The Morris

Minor was designed by Sir Alex Issigonis.

He was extremely proud of his creation as it

was suitably priced for the working class yet

had the luxuries and conveniences of a good

motor car. It was said to have superb

handling characteristics as well as lots of

space. Today, the Morris Minor remains a

well loved and collectable vehicle.

14th October 1926

On this day, Winnie- The-Pooh by A.A.

Milne was first published. The author based

the character on a bear owned by his son

Christopher Robin Milne. (see photo below)

The illustrations in the original book were

drawn by E.H. Shepherd. Winnie appeared in

the books Winnie-The-Pooh in 1926 and The

House at Pooh Corner in 1928. Walt Disney

bought television and recording rights from

Milne and since 1966, Disney has released

many features starring Winnie-The-Pooh and

his friends.

and came away

with a fine 41-5

win. The whole

of the club is

looking forward

to the rest of the

playing season.

On the domestic side of the club, our newly

refurbished kitchen should be up and

running by the end of September. Pre-match

dinners are being waited on with relish (I

hope I don't have to explain the play on

words) I hope the playing side news will be

better in next month‟s issue but if you can't

wait until then, why not come over and catch

a game or check out our website at

www.cirufc.co.uk.

League season has started but unfortunately it

has not been the best of starts for the 1st xv.

They lost both of their opening games in

London North East Three - first of all to

Romford and Gidea Park and then to Rochford.

Both of these games could have gone either

way with Canvey‟s finishing touch letting them

down. After stepping up a league this year, let‟s

hope it doesn‟t take long to adjust to life in this

league.

The Stacks meanwhile got off to a good start

drawing 25-25 to a strong Southend 3rds in the

first merit table game but then lost in the

second week 45-22 to East London. This was

partly due to the fact they lost 3 players to the

first team on Friday night - not the best

preparation for a merit table game. The Gnus

played their first merit table game against old
