Welcome to the June issue of Your Canvey Magazine!

We’re half way through the year already and

it seems that it is really true that the older you

get, the faster time seems to go! Mind you,

perhaps it has something to do with me having

just turned 40 at the end of May that is

causing time to pass at such an alarming rate!

One of the great pleasures I have in producing

our magazines is the wonderful people I get to

meet. I know - and receive feedback - that it is

our stories of local people and local history

that make Your Canvey so much more than

just an advertising magazine. This is one of

the reasons why we decided to put together

our first book which includes more of the

stories you love to read about.

Your Canvey Memories is now available to

purchase now for just £8.99 and we will

deliver it free within the Castle Point area.

You can use the order form on page 9, call us

on 01268 696404 or e mail

[email protected].

You can find out more and order online at our

website:

www.yourcanveymemories.co.uk

We always love to hear your feedback and

your stories so please do not hesitate to get in

touch on 01268 696404.

Enjoy this issue

Best Wishes

Fathers, in most families, are our special unsung heroes. They rarely ever get their fair share of adulation. Let Father's Day be your way to spread the message of love. Make it special by adding one of these great

father's day quotes.

“I cannot think of any need in childhood as

strong as the need for a father's protection.”

Sigmund Freud

“By the time a man realizes that maybe his

father was right, he usually has a son who

thinks he's wrong.” Charles Wadsworth

“He didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and

let me watch him do it.” Clarence

Budington Kelland

“A father carries pictures where his money

used to be.” Author Unknown

“The greatest gift I ever had came from God;

I call him Dad!” Author Unknown

“A new father quickly learns that his child

invariably comes to the bathroom at

precisely the times when

he's in there, as if he

needed company. The only

way for this father to be

certain of bathroom

privacy is to shave at the

gas station.” Bill Cosby

“Any man can be a Father

but it takes someone

special to be a dad.” Anne

Geddes

“The father of a daughter is

nothing but a high-class

hostage. A father turns a

stony face to his sons,

berates them, shakes his

antlers, paws the ground, snorts, runs them

off into the underbrush, but when his

daughter puts her arm over his shoulder and

says, ‘Daddy, I need to ask you something,’

he is a pat of butter in a hot frying pan.”

Garrison Keillor

“It’s only when you grow up, and step back

from him, or leave him for your own career

and your own home - it’s only then that you

can measure his greatness and fully

appreciate it. Pride reinforces love.”

Margaret Truman

“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone

could give another person, he believed in

me.” Jim Valvano

“They say that from the instant he lays eyes

on her, a father adores his daughter. Whoever

she grows up to be, she is always to him that

little girl in pigtails. She makes him feel like

Christmas. In exchange, he makes a secret

promise not to see the awkwardness of her

teenage years, the mistakes she makes or the

secrets she keeps.” Author Unknown

Castle Point Youth Council Launch New Website

Members of CPYC

Castle Point Youth Council has created a website for young people, giving information about activities, events and services in and around Castle Point.

The Youth Council was formed in March

2008 and consists of a group of 11 - 19 year

old volunteers who work to make sure the

voices of young people are heard. Keeping

close links with local schools and colleges,

the CPYC focus on the things people want

changed. They have worked to install new

youth shelters in parks, represented young

people at local council and neighbourhood

meetings and, most recently, launched the

new website - Think It, Click It.

The website highlights the interesting

aspects of each of the four areas of castle

Point and contains reviews of the many

places and activities available to young

people. There is also a wealth of other

information included on the site.

The website hopes to become an essential

guide to all the events, activities and

services available to young people. From

sports and leisure through to youth clubs and

health services, you can find it at think it,

click it.

Log on to www.thinkitclickit.co.uk to find

Are you an ex-pupil of Canvey Island Infant School?

Canvey Island Infant School is celebrating it’s 60th Anniversary this year and is looking for ex-pupils and staff to come forward with their memories and photographs.

Canvey Island Infant School was

originally part of the Junior School which

has also been known as Long Road

School and Canvey County. After the war

- probably due to the ever growing

population of Canvey, it was deemed

necessary to open a separate school for

infants and the current building opened as

a school in 1951.

An Open Day and Fun Day to celebrate

the anniversary is planned for the 9th

July. If you have any stories (good or bad)

or photographs you would like to share,

please contact Deputy Head Sandra

Dorrington by emailing:

[email protected] or call

the school office on 01268 683257.

Phil Eckett with Rani - A Brown Wood Owl

In this month’s Canvey People section, we are pleased to introduce you to some of our most unusual neighbours on the Island - an eclectic group of Owls bred by local resident Phil Eckett and his wife Geeta. Phil has been breeding owls since 1984

having had an interest in them since

childhood and over the years has bred and

reared many owls as well as rescuing injured

birds. He now runs Owlwise - a non-profit

making organisation dedicated to the

conservation of owls through education.

Money is raised for the upkeep of their own

birds as well as those that have been rescued

or are to be released into the wild. Talks and

shows also help to raise awareness to young

children and others of the need to protect

endangered species such as the Barn Owl as

well as the importance of looking after the

countryside.

On my visit to the Eckett’s home, I was

lucky enough to meet the latest addition to

the Owlwise family - a 4 week old European

Eagle Owl. The baby, who is being totally

hand-reared by the Ecketts in their living

room is as yet un-named. “We don’t tend to

name them until they get older and we know

what sex they are. There is no way of

knowing at this age.” Phil explained. “We

also like to choose their name to fit their

personality which is why we called the

Brown Asian Wood Owl Rani - the Indian

name for a queen as that is how she behaves.

She is very majestical and regal.”

“The main problem we have at the moment

is that as of January next year, we will no

longer be able to take our van into the Low

Emission Zone without incurring a hefty

charge.” says Phil. “The vast majority of our

rescue work is carried out within the zone,

but as a non-profit making organisation we

will be unable to cover the cost. We were

lucky enough to have our current van

donated by British Gas and would love to

hear from any organisation who may be able

to help with finding a suitable vehicle so we

can continue our work.”

To find out more about the work of

Owlwise, visit their website at

www.owlwise.web.officelive.com or

contact 01268 696115. You can also e mail

Although we are probably all aware of the two original remaining Dutch Cottages on the Island, it may come as a surprise to learn that there were also three replica cottages built , two of which still remain today.

The replica cottages were built in about 1950

by Fielder Estates and were on the Zeeland

Estate. As you can see from the above

photograph, two of the cottages even had

thatched roofs. The two cottages that still

exist today are in Beechcroft Road, off Long

Road. There is also another larger replica

Dutch Cottage on Ferndale Crescent.

The original Dutch cottages on the Island -

one at the top of Haven Road which is

now privately owned and the other at

Northwick Corner - date back to the

17th century when Dutch workers

were employed to drain Canvey Island

to make it habitable. The octagonal

structure of the original cottages was

quite rare but would have served a

useful purpose. It is strong and would

have been relatively easy to thatch.

The occupant could benefit from a

view in all directions. Furthermore, it

was built in a time when people were

very superstitious and the lack of right

angles would have been thought to

prevent evil spirits from lurking in the

corners.

There is also a Dutch

cottage on Crown Hill in

Rayleigh. However, the

history behind this one is

far from clear cut. The

plate above the door

dates the building from

1621 but over the years

surveyors, architects and

historians alike have

dismissed this. They are of the opinion that it

was not built until the eighteenth century,

more than likely around 1740. The real story

of the cottage, therefore, is a mystery, as no

one knows when, why or for whom it was

built. It is possible that it was built as a

replica of those found on Canvey Island. In

his book “Rayleigh: A History,” Ian

Yeardsley mentions that the cottage was

occupied in the 19th Century by Naomi

Hurrell, who was herself born in one of the

Canvey Island cottages. This would again

suggest that it was possibly built as a replica

of these. Yeardsley also states that Naomi

lived in the property with her nine children -

quite a squeeze I would imagine.

THANK YOU!

Dear Residents,

Firstly we would all like to say a very big

THANK YOU for giving the Party a very

comprehensive win in this years election in

both Borough and Town Council. We cannot

thank you enough for the support you have

given. All of our Councillors were re-

elected, with increased majorities and we

have two new Town Councillors to represent

you. What must be said is that whatever way

you voted or even if you did not vote, please

remember that our Councillors are here for

everyone, politics do not come into it. We

will do our utmost to assist and help in

whatever way we can - all you need to do is

ring your Ward Councillors and one of them

will try to help - we guarantee you that. It

was a very tough election but the Party's

determination and organisation paid off and

we will continue to represent you - Canvey

for Canvey.

Armed Forces Day

A note for your diary - Armed Forces Day is

on Saturday 25th June. The

Veterans will muster at 10.30 in

the north service yard opposite

the Town Council office. We

know that Canvey will come out

again to give fantastic support for

our Armed Forces. We hope this

year can be bigger and better than

the last one - Canvey certainly

showed how proud they are of

our brave Men and Women. In

the evening there is a “Drifters”

tribute at the Paddocks from 8pm

- more details and tickets can be

obtained via the Town Council

office. Raffle proceeds from the

evening event will be supporting

two Military Charities this year - the

Parachute Regiment and “Villas for Heroes.”

Are you aged between 9 and 12? Do you enjoy reading books?

A new Reading Club is launching at Canvey

Island Library and will be run by ten year old

Ben Owen. Leigh Beck pupil Ben was

approached by library staff to help organise the

reading club as he is a regular visitor to the

library and has an interest in reading all kinds

of books.

The aim of the Reading Club is to encourage

young people to talk about the books they

are reading and to find out what others

enjoy. These sessions will also give them the

opportunity to find out about the latest titles

being published and to choose which books

they want to see in the library. Girls and

boys between the ages of 9 and 12 are

encouraged to come along and make new

friends and have fun.

The first meeting of the group will be on

14th June at 4pm and then will be held once

a month on every second Tuesday. The

reading club is FREE to join.

Last month we reported that we were 3rd in the table with just 3 games to go. Sadly it was not to be as following a poor set of results over the Easter period - losing away at Carshalton Athletic and at home to local rivals Concord Rangers in front of a crowd of nearly 1,200 and despite a win in our final fixture away at Tooting and Mitcham United, we missed out on the play offs on goal difference finishing in 6th place.

It was a long hard season and it left us feeling

that we had run a marathon and ran out of

steam in the home straight. However, we

cannot be too disappointed as this is our

highest finishing position since the team

reformed after dropping out of the National

Conference league over 5 years ago. The

management team, players, club officials,

volunteer helpers and of course our fantastic

supporters can all be proud of themselves in

what has been achieved this season.

We now look forward to next season with

work starting immediately on putting the

squad together, arranging pre-season

friendlies and carrying our maintenance work

at the ground including cleaning,

painting general repair work etc.

There is no down time in football so

if anyof our supporters would like to

give a hand then pop down to the

ground on any Saturday morning and

we will find you something to do.

Missing out on the play offs allowed

us to run our 3rd annual Canvey

Island FC 5 and 7 a side Youth

Tournament sponsored by Owl Wise.

It was again hugely successful with

teams travelling far and wide to enter

as well as many local sides. Over 70

teams and some 2,000 people passed through

the turnstile over the course of the weekend to

enjoy the facilities on offer which you would

not get at many other tournaments. Our playing

surface, thanks to our grounds man, is still in

good condition and with goals loaned by our

own Youth Club and also very kindly loaned

by Island Boys Football Club we had 4 pitches

on the go all weekend. The weather was kind

and a good time was had by all.

Ages groups taking part were the under 7s and

8s who played a non competitive round of

matches, the under 9s won by Tigers JFC with

runners up East Thurrock, under 10s won by

Leigh Ramblers with runners up Tigers JFC,

under 11s won by Runwell Hospital with

runners up Canvey Island Youth. The under

12s was won by Canvey Island Youth with

runners up Catholic United and finally the

under 13s was won by Leyton Youth Tigers

with runners up Leyton Youth Pumas.

Off the pitch our weekly Sunday Bingo night is

well established staring at 6pm with cash prizes

to be won and the chance to win big money in

our key game. Other events are being planned

for the summer including live music so please

keep an eye on our official website.

2nd June 1985 UEFA ban England from Europe

European football’s governing body, UEFA,

banned all English clubs from playing in

Europe indefinitely, following a May riot at

Brussels’ Heysel stadium in which 39 people

died. An emergency session of soccer chiefs

in Switzerland imposed the ban, which could

not be appealed against.

Liverpool fans were blamed for the Heysel

tragedy. Supporters charged at a wall

separating them from Juventus fans, causing it

to collapse on to the mainly Italian crowd.

Though the ban was welcomed by some

leading figures in British football, many

English football supporters were outraged that

their clubs, which had nothing to do with the

tragedy, were being punished.

English clubs were eventually excluded from

continental competition for five years, with

the exception of Liverpool, which was

excluded for six.

4th June 1913

Suffragette Emily Davison died after throwing herself in front of the

king's horse at the Epsom Derby.

Emily Davison was a militant suffragette who

joined the Women’s Social and Political

Union (WSPU), founded by Emmeline

Pankhurst. She gave up her job as a teacher

and went to work full-time for the suffragette

movement.

She was frequently arrested for acts ranging

from causing a public disturbance to burning

post boxes and spent a number of short

periods in jail. In 1909, she was sentenced to a

month’s hard labour in Strangeways Prison in

Manchester after throwing rocks at the

carriage of chancellor David Lloyd George.

She attempted to starve herself, and resisted

force-feeding.

On 4 June 1913,

Davison ran out in

front of the king’s

horse as it was

taking part in the

Epsom Derby. Her

purpose was

unclear, but she

was trampled on

and died on 8 June

from her injuries.

18th June 1792 - Cigars were introduced into Britain from Cuba

Cigar smoking became so popular among

gentlemen in Britain that hotels and clubs

boasted smoking rooms to accommodate

them, The after-dinner cigar, accompanied by

glasses of port or brandy, also became a

tradition. King Edward VII enjoyed smoking

cigarettes and cigars, much to the chagrin of

his mother, Queen Victoria. After her death,

legend has it, King Edward said to his male

guests at the end of a dinner party,

“Gentlemen, you may smoke.”A line of

inexpensive American cigars has long been

named King Edward in his name, .The

expression “close but no cigar” comes from

the practice of giving cigars as prizes in

games involving good aim at fairgrounds.

being given one of their Automatic Updates to

change “Internet Explorer” to Version 9 and it

looks and acts just like Google’s Chrome!

(Unfortunately, “Internet Explorer” Version

9 does NOT work with the older Windows XP so for you, it may be good to try Google

Chrome if you have a slow Dialup or Mobile

Broadband Internet Connection)…. Also,

Windows Vista requires you have updated it to

Pack 2 (SP2) – ask PC Senior if you are not

sure!

So, which is my Favourite Web Browser? ….

FAVOURITES – Who me?

As a Parent/Grandfather, I’m not allowed to have “Favourites” BUT, as PC Senior, I AM allowed such

luxuries!

Up until recently, for my browsing on the

Internet, I have always used Microsoft’s

“Internet Explorer” (The Big Blue on

your initial Desktop Screen). Then, along

came “Google Chrome” I Downloaded

it from my Google Home Page and tried it.

True to their boast, it WAS a lot faster than

my “Internet Explorer,” especially on a slow

Dialup Computer or with a Mobile

Broadband Dongle! I had to “Tweak” the

settings a little to get it to my liking but then

YES it was O.K.

I think Microsoft must have thought so too,

because now I – and you no doubt – are
