Pandemic Impact: Cosmetic Procedures in DemandRealSelf expedited the launch of a virtual consultation

feature (realself.com/find) that helps doctors connect with consumers through video-based appointments in response to the pandemic. The company also reached out to com-munity members to offer support and stayed in close contact with them to better understand how COVID-19 is impacting their future plans for cosmetic procedures.

Consumers Feel Financial Impacts, But Plan to Proceed with Procedures

With widespread unemployment, it probably comes as little surprise that consumers considering aesthetic services feel the financial impact of COVID-19. According to the results of our survey completed in late April, four in 10 respondents (40 percent) have already been financially impacted by COVID-19, and an additional nine percent expect to be impacted at some point in the future. About a quarter of respondents (24 per-cent) said they haven’t been impacted but are unsure whether they will be in the future, and another 27 percent of respon-dents said they haven’t been impacted and don’t expect to be.

Even with nearly half (49 percent) of those surveyed say-ing they have or expect to be financially impacted, the large majority still plan to move forward with their procedures. In fact, when asked how soon they plan to move forward after their provider’s office reopens, 61 percent said they will do

so within six months. Another nine percent say they plan to move forward with procedures in six months or more, and 27 percent say they are unsure about timing.

Consumers and Doctors Will Benefit from Flexible Work Policies.

In a RealSelf community member survey sent on March 18, 2020, a small percentage of respondents (three percent) said they were actually more likely to have a procedure due to COVID-19 changes. Of that small subset, more than a third (36 percent) said they were more likely to have a pro-cedure because they were no longer working or were work-ing from home and therefore had more time to recover, while 22 percent said it was because they were no longer working or were working from home and had a more flex-ible schedule. Other reasons respondents gave for why they were more likely to move forward were hopes for better appointment availability (27 percent) and having more time to research a procedure (11 percent).

The notable takeaway—that work flexibility makes it easier to move forward with a treatment—remains relevant. As many companies plan to extend their work from home policies into later 2020, this new flexibility will likely result in an uptick in appointments that doctors may otherwise not have seen.

Selfies Drive Treatment DesiresAesthetic procedures increased six percent last year,

compared to 2018, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) 2019 survey results.

The average number of non-surgical procedures is up 13 percent compared to 2018. In fact, 85 percent of the total number of procedures performed by AAFPRS members is now minimally invasive non-surgical procedures with skin treatments (up 39 percent), fillers (up 13 percent), and Neurotoxins/Botox (up 12 percent) topping the list. The Botox/Neurotoxins category has seen the largest growth of all procedures with a 50 percent jump compared to 2013, the survey showed.

The most common surgical pro-cedures performed by AAFPRS members in 2019 were rhinoplasty, facelifts (including partial face-lifts), and blepharoplasty). The number of facelifts performed in 2019 increased by three percent last year while forehead lifts increased six percent in 2019 (from 13 percent in 2018 to 19 percent in 2019).

The Power of the Selfies and PrejuvenationSelfie-awareness continues to influence consumer behavior at a rapidly growing pace, according to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). In 2019, a full 72 percent of AAFPRS members report seeing patients seeking cosmetic procedures to look better for their selfies—up 15 percent from 2018!

People still care about their profile pics, too. AAFPRS members report that in 2019 more patients were seeking cosmetic procedures due to dissatisfaction with their profile images—a full 11 percent increase compared to 2018.

“Our annual statistics continue to show significant increases in the social media category,” says Nashville-based

facial plastic surgeon Mary Lynn Moran, MD, president of the AAFPRS, in a news release.

AAFPRS members note that there is more empha-sis on early care or “prejuvenation,” a term coined by the AAFPRS in 2016. Year after year more patients are having minimally invasive procedures as preven-tive measures, to maintain a youthful appearance and slow the aging process before it starts. In fact, 73 percent of AAFPRS members believe there will be a greater emphasis on earlier maintenance for patients starting in their 20s-30s, to forestall bigger procedures and surgery for longer.
