Your support makes all the difference for MelenaWith your help the Leukaemia Foundation can give families like Melena’s the emotional and practical support they need.

When 37-year-old mum Melena Roughana was

diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she

had just moved into her dream home with her

husband and two young children.

She put her persistent tiredness down to being

a busy wife and mum. Until a lump appeared on

the side of her neck.

The doctor had never seen such a large

mass before and Melena was rushed

to the emergency department to have

urgent treatment.

Melena’s cancer was so aggressive

she had to undergo over 100 hours of

straight chemotherapy.

“I would have chemo running through me day

and night, night and day, it would come to the

bathroom with me, it would walk down the halls

with me, chemo was everywhere,” she said.

Melena and her family lived five hours away

from the nearest treatment hospital.

“How could I fight for my life, if I didn’t know

where we would live?”

Thankfully Melena, her husband James, and

two girls, Savannah and Avangalena were

able to stay free-of-charge at one of our

accommodation villages while she received

life-saving treatment.

“I couldn’t believe there was such an amazing

facility available to me and my family, at the

saddest and most confusing time in my life.

The staff were so kind giving me a home-away-

from-home for however long I would need it.”

I was able to have my children

with me. This gave me great

comfort in a time when I was

completely lost.

The money you raise is the reason we can continue to fund some of Australia’s most important and exciting blood cancer research.

Researchers like Professor Mark Dawson and

Associate Professor Sarah-Jane Dawson from the

Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne

who have developed a world-first liquid biopsy

test that will mean more effective treatment and

less invasive tests for people with blood cancer.

The test has the potential to reduce painful and

invasive biopsies, replaced by a blood test which

monitors the blood for tiny fragments of DNA

released from cancer cells.

It will give doctors regular and precise insights

into a person’s blood cancer, allowing for more

personalised targeted therapies.

“We realise our responsibility in using community

donations to develop new and improved ways

to diagnose, monitor and treat cancer,” said

Professor Dawson.
