KEY STAGE 4 – YEAR 10 CURRICULUMThe student entitlement at Key Stage 4 is:

! English! Mathematics! Science! ICT! Sport & Activities! Religious Studies – 

  Including Citizenship and PHSE

This booklet describes these ‘core’ subjects,

but in order to complete your curriculum andyour timetable, you have some subjectchoices to make. These ‘option’ subjectcourses are outlined here to help you make

your decisions. The booklet also explains thespecialist vocational curriculum of the Marine

Academy and their details. Read theinformation carefully then ask a senior member of staff if there is anything you do notunderstand.

Shortly after Options Evening you will be givena Transition Form to complete and return to letus know your subject choices.

Before making your final choices you shouldconsult with your parents, your teachers and,if necessary, someone from Connexions

(Careers Service). After you have made your selection, the Academy will construct theYear 10 timetable in order that you canfinalise your choices.

This booklet sets out the Year 10 curriculum including the core subjects, which

everyone will learn PLUS the optional subjects.

ENGLISH, ENGLISH LANGUAGE and ENGLISH

LITERATURE

Students will be entered for either English (as

a single GCSE) or English Language and

English Literature (a double entry).

Students will develop skills of analysis in their 

reading of a range of different text types

(including moving image) from different times

and cultures. They will also develop skills of

writing a range of text types, for different

purposes and audiences. Finally, students will

develop the skills of speaking and listening in

a range of contexts and roles.

The courses offered present students with an

exciting look at the world around them, and

aim to prepare them for effect ive

participation in the ever-changing world.

MATHEMATICS

GCSE mathematics is studied at one of two

tiers of entry. !Students will sit either Higher or 

Foundation tier. The mathematics curriculum

is broken down into four main areas of study:

number, algebra, shape space and measure

and handling data.Some students will have the opportunity to sit

their GCSE examination in the June of Year 

10; this allows students the opportunity to

improve their grades in the summer exams if it

is felt necessary. The current GCSE being

studied is assessed through two examinations,

one with, and one without, a calculator. Each

paper is worth 50% of the overall GCSE.

ICT

All students at MAP will follow an innovativeICT course!covering ICT skills for business and

a further range of creative based topics.! The

'OCR Nationals in ICT' course enables students

to develop and experience up-to-date ICT

skills and knowledge, using a wide range of

M i c r o s o f t a n d M a c r o m e d i a

software.! Students study a mandatory unit

and then will progress to complete additional

units which can result in students gaining one,

two or more GCSE equivalents.! All

assessment is by completion of coursework 

modules.

SPORT AND ACTIVITIESAll students have a single session each week of Sport & Activities as part of the corecurriculum.! Students have the opportunity tofollow a pathway that suits their interests;these option pathways are, typically:Performance, Fitness, Leadership andParticipation. These pathways provide the

major focus of study in Sport & Activitiesthroughout Key Stage 4 and include a rangeof the following activities: football, rugby,netbal l , cr icket, rounders, c l imbing,trampolining, table tennis, fitness, boxing,rocketball, athletics and baseball.

SCIENCEThere are a number of science coursesavailable as part of the core curriculum.!Somestudents will study GCSE Core Science,examined in Year 10, and then progress to

GCSE Additional Science, examined in Year 11. Other students will have the opportunity tofollow a Level 2 Applied Science BTEC course,which will give a more vocational option. Thiscourse is non-examined but achievement isassessed continuously through a portfolio ofassignments, all of which must be completedto at least a pass level to achieve aqualification.

Students and parents will be advised on themost suitable course by their Science

teachers, based on their work, performanceand attendance during Year 9.

BUSINESSThis course allows students to tackle a widerange of business areas and, havingachieved a Business qualification in Year 9worth one GCSE, students will continue towork on a second in Year 10. This will consistof units on Personal Finance, People inOrganisations and Financial Forecasting for Business. In Year 11, students will form real

businesses within their groups and gainunderstanding of working in business teams,p e r s o n a l s e l l i n g a n d b u s i n e s scommunications. In Year 11 they will be able

to achieve 2 further GCSE equivalentqualifications, making 4 in total. The course isentirely portfolio based – which means thatthere are no exams at any point.

This course will not only allow students to gaina holistic understanding of business but willalso offer a perfect springboard to the rangeof post 16 business courses offered at MarineAcademy Plymouth, indeed, some studentsmay embark on discrete Level 3 modulesduring Year 11.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES AND CITIZENSHIPAll students in the Pathways option have asession of Religious Studies, PHSE andCitizenship each week. This course enables

students to gain up to two GCSE short coursequalifications. Students have the opportunityto study a variety of issue based topics andare asked to explore them from a social,moral, cultural and spiritual dimension.Throughout the course students areencouraged to think independently, explorea range of different points of view, arguepersuasively and develop effective writtenand verbal communication skills.

EFFECTIVE LEARNINGThe Effective Learning team will continue tosupport those students who are entitled toreceive additional support, both in theclassroom and through the Effective LearningCentre. In-class support is directed towardsthe core subjects of English, Maths, ICT andScience, but may also be available in other curriculum areas.

Some students, who have specific needs willfollow a personal learning package, whichwill be individually arranged. These studentswill spend time in the ELC where they willreceive additional and highly focussedsupport. The centre aims to provide astructured learning environment, with work tailored to meet each individual’s needs.

ART and DESIGNAre you a creative person who enjoys Art?!This course involves learning to work with awide range of Art materials and techniques,including painting, drawing printing, textiles,photography, ceramics, sculpture and much

more.This is a coursework-based course whichallows you develop individual projects thatwill teach you all of the necessary skills tocontinue on into the world of Art!

BTEC LEVEL 2 EXTENDED CERTIFICATE IN MUSIC 

Students who opt for this course will be ableto explore their creative passion for music,through optional units such as:!! Performing as music ensemble e.g.

working as pop/rock band, singinggroup, instrumental group

! Creating your own ideas andproducing a musical product such asa CD or Live performance

! Exploring music sequence programsand areas of music technology

! Understanding development of musicand music from other cultures!

PUBLIC SERVICESThis highly successful course offers studentsthe opportunity to learn a wide range of skillsuseful for everyday life as well as preparingthem for employment within a public service,such as the army, the navy and the Royal Air Force, the police, the ambulance service

and the fire brigade.! This course is worth theequivalent of two GCSEs and due to thenature of this course places are limited.! Thereare physical activities involved in the courseand it will suit students who have a genuineinterest in the uniformed public services.!Assessment will be by assignments which arecompleted both at college and at home.

DESIGN TECHNOLOGYStudents will have the opportunity to studythe design process and produce products

utilising the knowledge and skills gained ineach area.GCSE Textiles involves students in activitieswhich develop innovative and fabric-basedproducts to meet a potential user’s needs.

Students will learn about decorating andconstructing textile products, along withdesigning and the environmental issues thatarise during production. The course has 2internally assessed controlled assignmentsworth 60% of the final grade and 2 externally

assessed exams worth 40%.

GCSE Food and Nutrition is a very practicalcourse using the knowledge and skills learnedduring the course and applying them torealistic situations. Students will learn aboutthe catering industry, food hygiene, nutritionand meal planning, as well as developingpract ical sk i l l s in food preparat ion.!Organisation, planning and problem solvingskills are involved in this subject. The course

consists of an internally assessed controlledassessment unit worth 30%, an exam boardprescribed task worth 40% and a theoryexamination worth 30% of the final grade.

MARINE STUDIES AND SPORT – BTEC LEVEL 2EXTENDED CERTIFICATEThis exciting course, offers the potential for allstudents, boys and girls, who are activelyinvolved in sport and physical activity tocontinue with their practical involvement anddevelop their knowledge and understanding

in the following areas.The course is made up of 4 units of study;

HISTORYGCSE History is a sound foundation for anyoccupation or route of study.! A GCSE inhistory demonstrates that a student can sortinformation effectively, argue persuasivelyand write succinctly.! Students study a varietyof topics throughout the course, which areassessed in modular exams during the twoyears.! In Year 10, students study how societyhas viewed ‘Medicine Through Time’ and an

in-depth study on ‘The development ofPlymouth through the last thousand years’.! InYear 11 students study the American ‘WildWest’ which is assessed at the end of the year.

GEOGRAPHYDo you enjoy finding out about other countries and the processes that shape our globe? Are you concerned about the futureof our planet? The topics range fromdisastrous earthquakes, volcanoes and floodsto birth control in India and the impact of

tourism on different parts of the world. Localfieldwork gives the opportunity to research anaspect of geography of your choice. Thefinal grade is awarded as follows: Paper 1(37.5%), Paper 2 (37.5%), Coursework (25%).

BTEC LEVEL 2 IN PERFORMING ARTS : ACTINGThis course provides students with theopportunity to develop skills and knowledgeaimed not only at those students who want towork in the performing arts but also those who

enjoy drama and see it as a way ofdeveloping their confidence. The course ismade up of three units based around:

! Devising plays! Understanding drama! Acting

You will learn the basic techniques of acting,using vocal and movement skills, interpretingand developing characters and performing inan acting role. There will be opportunities toperform to a range of audiences. For thosewho enjoy dance and singing there will alsobe opportunities for you to study theseelements within this course. This is a verypractical course with an emphasis on workingtogether to produce performances. This is avery successful and popular course thatstudents enjoy and gain much from.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES (Available for 

the Pathways Core+ students)

Year 10 students will have the opportunity tostudy a modern foreign language. This maybe by opting for a GCSE in French. The newGCSE topics cover 4 contexts: Lifestyle,Leisure, Home & Environment, Work &Education. Students will complete 2 pieces ofwritten assessment (30% of whole grade), 2recorded speaking tests (30%), sit oneListening paper (20%) and one Readingpaper (20%).

TRAVEL and TOURISMThis course allows students to investigate awide range of Travel & Tourism organisations,career paths and activities. The course givesa good insight into one of Devon &

Cornwall’s most important industries. Unitscovered include exploring travel and tourism,dealing with customers, investigating touristdestinations and promoting travel andtourism, planning and running a travel &tourism event and exploring hospitality intravel & tourism. This course is worth theequivalent of four GCSEs and is entirelyp o r t f o l i o - b a s e d – i . e . t h e r e a r e n oexaminations attached to this course.

HAIR & BEAUTYQual i f icat ions are studied over twoacademic years

Reception Duties

Hair & Beauty - students will spend two

sessions a week in the MAP hair saloncovering the practical skills and underpinningknowledge related to the Hair & BeautyIndustry.

Topics covered include – an introduction tothe hair & beauty sector, health & safety,personal presentation, shampooing &conditioning hair, hand care and styling hair.

In addition, students will follow the Level 2Certificate in Salon Reception Duties which

will provide opportunities to develop arange of skills, techniques and personalqualities essential for progression in tofurther education & employment.

Topics covered include – laws related toworking in the hair industry, health &safety, deal ing with emergencies,displaying stock, promoting sales, bookingappointments, methods of payment.

The Level 2 Certificate in Salon ReceptionDuties is worth the equivalent of twoGCSE’s at A-C grade

For both qualifications students will beassessed during practical sessions and willalso undertake written assignments & tasks.

A portfolio of the learner’s work will becompleted for each of the courses.

MARINE STUDIES

Marine leisure is a growing industry, withopportunities in practical areas such ascoaching, instructing and leading outdoor shore and sea based adventurous activities,as well as in facility management andadministration.

Marine leisure qualifications can supportlocal, national and international careers inthe marine sector.

The BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Sport(Watersports) is designed to introducelearners to working in the sector or preparethem for further study. Equivalent to 4 GCSE’sthe course is both portfolio and practicallyevidenced. Students will gain skills andadditional certification in a range ofwatersports such as sailing, kayaking, power boating and coasteering as well as first aidand VHF shortwave radio.

Comprising 7 units in total, 2 mandatory units  – f i tness and training, outdoor andadventurous activities and 5 optional units,much of the course will be delivered off site

by instructors already employed in thewatersports industry. All wetsuits and personalsafety equipment will be provided.

HOSPITALITY, FOOD PREPARATION & COOKERY You will have the opportunity to gain aninsight into the hospitality industry visitinghospitality businesses to gain a real insight intothe industry and experience first-hand the

exciting opportunities that the industry has tooffer.

The programme will enable you to gainaccess to further hospitality and cateringqualifications or access to employment withinthe hospitality and catering industry. Theprogramme includes a range of units that willdevelop your customer service skills, gainsome food preparation, cookery and servingskills, the service of beverages and how toplan and run a hospitality event.Food preparation and cookery will enablestudents to acquire the skills and knowledgeto prepare and cook food hygienically and todevelop their serving skills. In additional youwil l have the opportunity to gain arecognised Food Hygiene Certificate whichwill allow you to work within the hospitalityand catering industries.

ART and DESIGN
