CAE & SIMULATION CAE & SIMULATION

We are passionate about the use of virtual technology to evaluate yourproduct from every angle.

Other areas of our work are fatigue and kinematics. The stan-dard “manual calculation methods” based on HSB and ESDUare routine, as is the finite element method. These involvecalculating metal structures as well as monolithic or sand-wich-style fibre composite structures.

We advise and assist our customers with the following, forexample:· Development of structural concepts· Creation of design principles

(metal and fibre composite construction)· Development, design and weight optimisation of metal

and fibre composite components· Generation of production data

(especially in the fibre composite components)· On-site manufacturing support· System installation and integration

(especially mechanical systems across all ATA chapters)· Development of interior components

(galleys, lavatories, stowage compartments, VIP decor)· Design and configuration of cabin elements

(F2F, PSU, class dividers, etc.)

Electromagnetic simulation By using FE calculations (2D/3D) in both the time and frequency domain, we help our customers to solve electro-magnetic issues such as:· Electrical and magnetic component design· Electromagnetic field distribution in a wide range of

materials and geometries· Force and torque development due to the

electromagnetic field· Thermal behaviour of current-carrying elements

(conductive heating)· Electromagnetic induction

In all of these areas, we can draw on our expertise in the design of electrical machinery, electromagnetic actuators andlinked systems (electrical-thermal-mechanical).

System simulation We use simulation tools such as Matlab Simulink, Simulati-onX, Dymola and GT Suite to analyse multiphysical correlati-ons and provide support for our customers in the followingareas:· Powertrain· Controlled suspension· Energy management· Air conditioning· Cooling systems· Charge cycles· Coupling and co-simulation· Model order reduction

Theseus-FE Our internally developed and commercially marketed Theseus-FE simulation software is based on the finite elementmethod and consists of the following main components:· A solver base for thermal simulations

(heat conduction and radiation)· A thermophysiological model to predict thermal comfort

(e.g. in vehicle interiors or buildings)· A special module (oven) to predict bodywork

temperatures in paint-drying ovens (incl. Abaqus user subroutine for bodywork adhesives)

· A special module (E-coating) to simulate the thickness of the paint coating in a cataphoretic container

· A powerful graphic user interface (GUI) for modelling and evaluating results

· Coupling tools, e.g. for CFD software such as Star-CCM+ and OpenFOAM

· Mappers to transmit results between different networks and result formats

THESEUS-FE is used primarily by customers in the automotiveindustry, but also by universities and academic institutions,as well as in in the field of building physics and aerospace.Further details of THESEUS-FE can be found athttp://www.theseus-fe.com.

We help our customers to optimise the fatigue strength andlifetime of structural components during the design process:· Load data calculation· Load data analysis· Load spectrum determination· Lifetime planning for suspension and drive components· Design of bodywork and attached parts· Load path optimisation

Multi-body simulations We use multi-body simulations to help our customers solveall kinds of kinematic and dynamic problems, and can drawon many years of experience in the following sub-areas in particular. Our range of services also includes the integrationof flexible bodies or control systems.· Vehicle dynamics and driving comfort· Powertrain simulation· Gearbox design· Load data calculation and analysis

Flow calculation and thermal simulationThe main task of the flow calculation and thermal simulationdepartment is to conduct thermal analyses of systems andcomponents. For detailed studies of heat transfer, we use 3Dflow calculations (CFD) as well as 3D thermal conduction andradiation calculations. More complex overall systems such ascircuitry and charge cycles in combustion engines are depicted using 0D and 1D models, which can then be linkedto detailed 3D models of components and subsystems. Material transport processes including chemical reactions arealso taken into consideration for engine combustion and exhaust gas after-treatment, as is air conditioning (humidity).Although the simulation techniques used are generic andtransferable to other applications, a number of focal areashave emerged, such as the calculation of component tempe-rature in vehicles based on engine compartment flow, air conditioning of passenger compartments and comfort ratings, calculations for cooling systems and charge cycle processes, and cooling of electrical components such as control units, batteries, LEDs and headlights.

Software and method developmentWe develop software that is fine-tuned to our customers’needs and requirements:· Automation in the CAE & simulation environment· Individual pre-/post-processing and solving· Simulation data management· UMAT and VUMAT for Abaqus

Structural mechanics aerospace Structural mechanics aerospace covers the whole spectrumof component development for the aerospace sector, fromdesign method analysis and dimensioning through manu-facturing support, test definition and verification manage-ment to supervision of series production. In addition to staticcalculations for strength, stiffness and stability, we also dealwith dynamic issues such as modal analyses.
