The need to transition to the digital economy makes automated data exchange essential. The Internet of Things and cloud and business network technologies will make it happen. A new depth and breadth of collaboration among asset management stakeholders – and their equipment – is now possible through data exchange networks.

SAP leads the next wave of asset management innovation by bringing asset ecosystem partners onto a single cloud-based collaborative network platform called SAP® Asset Intelligence Network. We envision the network as a central hub that serves as a global register for equipment in an extended ecosystem. Each asset element has a unique ID that authorizes the publication of and subscription to relevant content on the network.

Improving Collaboration in the Asset Management Ecosystem

Those who manage industrial assets have specific goals and requirements. Asset operators want to minimize capital investments, operational overhead, and risk, and they prefer to buy services provided by equipment rather than the equipment itself. OEMs want to increase revenue growth and sharpen competitive edge with bundled products and services. Service providers want to offer value-added services enabled by technological innovation. All can benefit from a simplified collaboration model.

The Pillars of SAP Asset Intelligence Network

SAP Asset Intelligence Network is based on thefollowing pillars:

• Applications • Processes • Content • Network • Integration • User interface (UI)

This section discusses these pillars in detail and explains how each contributes to the simplified collaboration model that SAP Asset Intelligence Network represents for subscribing business partners.

APPLICATIONSApplications represent the first pillar on which SAP Asset Intelligence Network is based. The functions these applications support are summarized individually here.

Company Profile ApplicationAn organization’s administrator can use the company profile application to add locations and users to the organization in SAP Asset Intelligence Network. If the organization holds a premium account with SAP Asset Intelligence Network, the administrator can invite other organizations to use the network’s services.

Business Partners ApplicationBeing a network, SAP Asset Intelligence Network could potentially connect every organization that is registered to every other organization. To ensure that only approved organizations view and use data provided, the business partners application lets users specify other parties on SAP Asset Intelligence Network as their business partners. As a business partner, those parties can:

• View the list of connected business partners • Send a connection request to a business partner

• View and accept connection requests from business partners

• View connection requests sent to business partners

Authorizations ApplicationDefining who should be able to do what with a specific set of data is key – especially in a network where data is exchanged between companies. Therefore, SAP Asset Intelligence Network provides an application to manage authorizations for data created by a specific business partner.

The owner of an object can give read, write, and delete access to other business partners on the network for that object. This means that the manufacturer of a specific model can grant read access to his customers for a specific model on the network. This access would allow the customer to create equipment based on the data for that manufacturer’s model.

Model Templates ApplicationA model templates application enables adminis-trators from the customer side and SAP to create templates of models that support the upload of model information as well as search and analysis functions. A template’s structure is hierarchical – model, class, subclass – and is based on ISO and distributed interactive simulation (DIS) standards. A model’s attributes are inherited by its child templates. The model templates application gives an overview of all existing templates and their related attributes. An option lets users define a hierarchical structure of templates for reuse.

Models ApplicationTo build a global repository of machines, SAP Asset Intelligence Network works with models. A model is a manufacturer’s abstract representation that

defines all maintenance and specification infor-mation related to a product. A piece of physical equipment is a physical instance of a model. Models are based on a template and allow users to add values to the definitions used in an under-lying template. A model can include additional information, such as instructions, announcements, parts, and attachments.

Equipment ApplicationA piece of equipment is a physical instance of a model, with the model serving as the digital twin. Equipment can be created based on model information or with no reference to a specific model. An operator (or service provider) maintains additional information specific to a piece of equip-ment, such as installation information, installation location, and attachments (see Figure 1).

Installation information contains equipment data such as serial number, tag number, installation date, and build date. Installation location data is the geographical coordinates indicating where that piece of equipment is located. Attachments are unstructured information specific to a piece of equipment.

Instructions ApplicationInstructions are a set of steps that detail the exe-cution of a specific task. In SAP Asset Intelligence Network, the manufacturer shares instructions with operators and service providers to help them maintain the equipment. SAP Asset intelligence Network contains definitions of different types of instructions (see Figure 2):

• Planned maintenance instructions give infor-mation about a task the operator performs at regular intervals. These are not mandatory instructions. The operator applies them based on local conditions, such as weather.

• Breakdown instructions describe a task the operator must perform when dealing with unplanned situations, such as when a piece of equipment fails to operate due to an internal leak.

• Installation instructions provide information for installing a piece of equipment.

• Operations instructions provide information on how to use a piece of equipment.

• Disposal instructions provide information on how to dispose of a piece of equipment.

Attachments ApplicationAttachments are an important building block in SAP Asset Intelligence Network for sharing documents. The attachments application enables users to:

• View all documents used by his or her organiza-tion in SAP Asset Intelligence Network

• Upload new documents and assign the documents to other business partners

• Update attachments centrally so changes apply to all business objects related to a specific attachment

Announcements ApplicationMaking announcements is the way OEMs can communicate information about a model (and the equipment based on the model). A typical example is when a manufacturer changes some-thing in the instructions for a machine and wants all operators or service providers for this machine to be aware of the change. The manufacturer uses the announcements application to create an announcement that informs all business partners who are interested in this specific model. Different types of announcements are defined in SAP Asset Intelligence Network, including instruction changes, service bulletins, recalls, and spare-parts changes.

Improvement Case ApplicationWith the improvement case application, SAP Asset Intelligence Network offers collaborative func-tionality for member business partners. Service providers or equipment operators can inform the manufacturer of any difficulties they experience with a piece of equipment, for example, inadequate performance. On reviewing the information, the manufacturer may propose a solution, such as changing parameter settings for a setup, or take the feedback into account to improve the model.

Content Package ManagementWith a content package management application, content providers such as OEMs can sell additional content to other business partners in the network. The content providers can publish their offering in a catalog format using SAP App Center or a dynamic offering directly on the equipment or models.

PROCESSESThe applications available from SAP Asset Intelli-gence Network enable a number of processes. The processes essential to performing within SAP Asset Intelligence Network are described here (see Figure 3).

Get Started with SAP Asset Intelligence NetworkUsually, the first process for a new organization or user in SAP Asset Intelligence Network is to create its presence in the network as a business partner and to include its users and locations. This establishes the foundation for all subsequent processes and activities.

Establish Business Partner ConnectionsNext, connections to other business partners can be established. These connections will be the basis for reaping advantages from the network. Business partners initiate a connection by sending a connection request to other companies on SAP Asset Intelligence Network. A manufacturer can invite his customers to the network or receive invitations from them to join. Connection requests can be accepted or rejected. After a connection is established, it is possible to collaborate on business objects.

Security and privacy are very important topics in this context. For that reason, users should use the authorizations application to grant the desired authorizations for their connections so only approved companies can view, change, or delete their business objects.

Exchange Announcements Based on Model andEquipment DataA relationship between manufacturer and operator enables them to share information based on model data. The flow can run as shown in Figure 4. The connection allows operators to get the latest information for the equipment they have in place. Manufacturers can easily distribute information to their customers.

CONTENTTo provide the foundation for collaborative asset management and customer service processes, a well-organized content structure must be in place. SAP Asset Intelligence Network supports the bundling of asset-related information elec-tronically. This enables companies to:

• Understand, analyze, and compare the technical characteristics, operating environmental conditions, potential failures, and maintenance activities for equipment

• Understand the performance and value of assets along a given classification

• Manage assets by applying relevant controls according to their classification within the organization (a combination of procedural, technical, and organizational criteria)

Data structures relevant to an asset intelligence network describe industrial equipment. To support this objective, SAP Asset Intelligence Network provides the main data types shown in the following table.

SAP Asset Intelligence Network works with pre-defined, standards-based content (see Figure 7). The first standards adopted were ISO 14224 and ISO 15926. ISO 14224 is an international standard for the collection and exchange of reliability and maintenance data for equipment. ISO 15926 focuses on interoperability in the process industry. An important part of the standard is the reference data library. This library contains technical class descriptions of all main equipment items, pipes instruments, buildings, activities, and anything else used in engineering, building, procuring,

operating, or maintaining process facilities. Additional standards can be incorporated as needed by the business partners in the network. Besides those fundamental data structures, SAP Asset Intelligence Network provides a set of data types linked to those data structures, including but not limited to equipment templates, equipment functions, failure modes, maintenance instructions, documents, spare parts, location, systems, groups, and announcements.
