‘WHAT’S COMING UP IN THIS ACTIVITY?’

Good question! You will revise your knowledge and understanding of

● connectives

● pronouns

● prepositions of place

● articles

Also, you will extend what you have learnt at school about

● prepositions of time

● prepositions of movement

● the zero article

● parts of speech

● types of nouns

● possessive nouns

● verbs and adverbs

JUMP 1

Angel and Zavier have each written four sentences using different connectives.

Each of their first sentences are correct. They have made mistakes using

connectives in two of their other three sentences.

As a quick connectives revision exercise, you need to

● identify the sentences in which they have used connectives incorrectly

● rewrite these sentences correctly in your workbook

● rewrite SENTENCE 1 and SENTENCE 5 each as two simple sentences

In exercise Jump 3, you revised your understanding of prepositions of place. In

this exercise, you are going to expand your understanding of prepositions of

time.

Prepositions of time tell us when something happens. There are only three

prepositions of time but you need to use them correctly.

AT We use at for clock times, festivals,

holidays and specific times periods

including ‘at night’.

EXAMPLES

● at four o’clock

● at lunchtime

IN We use in when referring to months,

seasons, years, centuries and also

general times of the day.

EXAMPLES

● in the afternoon

● born in 2006

ON We use on to specify days of the

week, specific dates and special

days.

EXAMPLES

● on her birthday

● on Christmas day

A preposition of time is missing from each sentence. Complete each sentence

by writing either at, in or on. The example shows you what to do.

Jamie enjoys fishing by the lake in summer.

Sue’s birthday falls January.

Sue’s birthday is Friday.

Sue’s birthday party starts three o’clock.

The school holidays end Monday

Alex enjoys reading the school holidays.

My aunt is visiting the family Christmas.

My aunt stayed for a while and left Easter Sunday.

Many birds migrate autumn and spring.

Jenny is going bowling Friday afternoon.

Kendal gets up early the morning.

Kevin goes to bed late night.

My parents were teenagers the 1980s.

Mum says that I need to visit the dentist two weeks time.

You know that in, on and at are also prepositions of place.

For example, you can be in London, on Oxford Street and in a coffee shop.

Next to the pictures on the next page, write sentences showing how in, on and

at are both prepositions of place and time. You need to include some

information from the picture.

The examples show you what to do, but do you own work. Get the grammar

right!

IDEAS TO HELP YOU WRITE YOUR SENTENCES

● LENGTH: keep your sentences quite short – this helps to make the meaning

clear.

● YOUR WORK: be original – don’t adapt sentences from a book or another

piece of text.

● CHECK: check your work – how could you improve each sentence and make

it more interesting to read? Does each sentence use the verb + adverb

combination correctly?

● SHARE: read your sentences to a friend or family member – do they like your

work and find it fun, interesting and well written? Ask them for any ideas that

could make your work better next time.

The questions are about

‘ACE PARTS of SPEECH’.

Write your questions to the

questions – this time you don’t

need to write full sentences. You

can write a word or a phrase as

an answer.

QUESTION YOUR ANSWER

What is the topic or theme of this song?

How many parts of speech are mentioned in

the song?

JUMP 10

Your class is learning about possessive nouns in grammar. Possessive nouns are

used to show ownership. The examples will make ownership clear.

SINGULAR NOUN POSSESSIVE

● Rebecca’s dress is fashionable.

● Rebecca’s dresses are fashionable.

The first sentence tells you that Rebecca has one fashionable dress. We use ‘‘s

to show that the dress is hers. The second sentence tells you that Rebecca has

more than one fashionable dress – we don’t know how many. The apostrophe ‘s

still shows that Rebecca owns more than one dress.

PLURAL NOUN POSSESSIVE

● The students’ grades are outstanding.

● The owls’ eyes were piercing.

The first sentence tells that more than one student has outstanding grades. The

apostrophe is at the end of the plural students, meaning that more than one

student has ‘ownership’ of good grades. In the same way, the second sentence

tells you there are at least two owls that have piercing eyes. The apostrophe

comes after the plural owls showing more than one owl had piercing eyes.

Your class is doing a quick test on possessive nouns. Each student has to write

four sentences.

● SENTENCE 1 uses a singular possessive noun and a singular noun.

● SENTENCE 2 uses a singular possessive noun and a plural noun.

● SENTENCE 3 uses a plural possessive noun and a singular noun.

● SENTENCE 4 uses a plural possessive noun and a plural noun.

Although your Amazing Tribe classmates are starting to ace grammar, they find

possessives quite challenging. Two of each of their four sentences are incorrect.

Read what Juniper, Apollo, Saffron and Jaxton have written. Identify their

incorrect sentences.

Juniper writes

SENTENCE 1

The dog’s dinner was too spicy.

SENTENCE 2

The dogs’ dinners were too spicy.

SENTENCE 3

The computer’s keyboard was broken.

SENTENCE 4

Americans’ have different ideals from
