Our Team for High Holy Days 5776 We are delighted that this year, Rabbi Colin Eimer will be joining Alyth’s own Rabbis, Mark Goldsmith and Josh Levy, to lead our High Holy Days services.

Colin is one of the most respected Reform rabbis in the country. Ordained in 1971, he was rabbi at SDRS (now Sha’arei Tzedek) from 1977 to his ‘retirement’ earlier this year.

Also joining our rabbinic team for these Yamim Noraim are Student Rabbi Kath Vardi, and on Rosh Hashanah and Kol Nidre, Student Rabbi Hannah Kingston. Both are entering the fourth year of their rabbinic studies.

We are proud to have as members three of the most influential rabbis in the UK, who will be preaching or teaching over this period: Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris, Principal of the Leo Baeck College, Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Rabbi to the Reform Movement and Rabbi Dr Tony Bayfield CBE, our Movement’s President.

Activities for families and young people will be run by members of our Youth and Education Hub: Sam Brunner, Mike Mendoza, Chloe Kimmel and Sophie Peterman, along with RSY-Netzer movement worker Tash Shaw. Providing activities for younger children will be our Kindergarten Head and Deputy Head, Cindy Summer and Tor Alter.

Our Director of Music, Viv Bellos, leads our High Holy Days choir for the final time this year. We are grateful to her and welcome Katie Hainbach, our new Head of Music and Arts. Lynette Sunderland, our Director of Welfare and Life Cycle, will be with us on Yom Kippur, providing care and learning throughout the day.

We are grateful of the hard work of our facilities team, Alan, Ben and Bob. Who, under the management of Community Director Adam Martin are available to support you through-out this period.

We are very grateful also to all of our volunteers and lay leaders without whom the Alyth High Holy Days would not be possible.

PRE-HIGH HOLY DAYS

ELUL SERVICES Elul, the month preceding Rosh Hashanah, is traditionally a time of preparation for the High Holy Days. Among the rituals we will include in our services are the sounding of the shofar at the morning service, which serves as a wake up call to those preparing for the period, and the recitation of Psalm 27. Our special Shabbat services for Elul are: Tefillah Laboratory: Shira Chadashah Saturday 5 September, 11:00 Return after the summer for a special service for the whole Alyth community, in which the feel and melodies of a guitar-led Friday night service are brought into a Shabbat morning. Led by Rabbi Josh. Selichot Film and Service Saturday 5 September, from 20:00 It is traditional to begin the High Holy Days by coming together on a Saturday evening for Selichot, the first opportunity to hear and recite our poems of pardon. We will start the evening with Woody Allen’s ‘Crimes and Misdemeanours’, a film that asks what happens when no one can see the mistakes we make. After light refreshments, we will transition into our reflective choral service with Rabbi Mark and Viv Bellos, beginning at 22:15. Kollot in the Beit Tefillah Saturday 12 September, 10:30 On the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah our Kollot service - an informal, participatory minyan, mostly in Hebrew, chanted and sung - will be in the main Beit Tefillah. Led by Rabbi Josh and Justin Wise. There is a supervised area for children. Shabbat Healing Service Saturday 12 September, 10:30 A special service including prayer and inspirational texts to help us begin or continue coming to terms with challenges of all kinds as we move towards the High Holy Days. With Rabbi Mark and Lynette Sunderland.

Today, Qari Mohammed Asim, is in conversation with Rabbi Mark about the role of religious communities in bringing up teens. Join us for a participative discussion. Everyone is welcome.

15:00 The Other ‘Half’ of the Bookcase: Female Prophets, Leaders and Sages (Alyth’s High Holy Days Learning Room) We often speak about gender equality in Reform Judaism as a ‘religious value’. How can we reconcile that statement with the absence of women in our narratives? In this session with Rabbi Josh and Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris we will explore biblical and rabbinic materials to see that they do show women as prophets, leaders and sages.

2015

For the Application Form go to

Join us for our fourth Alyth Weekend Away.

We’ll pray, sing, learn and simply be together for two fun filled days in the Oxfordshire

countryside. We will also have an opportunity to walk, talk and read the papers or just relax.

The weekend is for everyone in the community.

It also includes a full programme for children run by our Youth and Education professionals

and teenage madrichim.
