The Hot Jobs publication is developed through research of online job postings. In addition to this data, the following input is offered from the Hot Jobs Panel, which consists of our Hot Jobs partner organizations:

Healthcare: Mercy Health Partners is currently the largest employer in Muskegon County and is planning a $97 million expansion and building project, which supports continued growth in the already growing healthcare industry.

Manufacturing: Manufacturing remains a viable occupation locally; however, updated skills are necessary. Employers report having a difficult time finding the skilled talent necessary to fill their openings and are requiring overtime of their current workforce due to unfilled positions. Many positions are created due to an aging workforce.

Information Technology: Although there aren’t a large number of IT firms in the area, multiple employers have needs for IT staff. Because of how these positions are posted, they don’t register in our data as “hard-to-fill”, but the feedback from the Hot Jobs Panel is that they truly are difficult to fill positions. This is due to multiple factors: lack of “big city” appeal; competition from “work at home” companies; lack of necessary skills and experience and attracting web developers and network administrators is highly competitive – times are good for those with the necessary skills.

Agriculture: Positions in this industry remain seasonally high, especially in Oceana County. While many positions do not offer year-round employment, 200+ positions were filled in spring/summer 2013 at a variety of agricultural employers. Similar numbers are expected for the spring/summer of 2014.

Local Retail/Hospitality: Retail and hospitality continues to show growth; new establishments such as Gordmans, DSW and Five Guys Burgers and Fries are examples of growth in this industry. The opening of the new, larger Muskegon Farmers Market and events such as Bike Time, Electric Forest and a variety of music festivals and events also provide employment opportunities.

Other: The proposed Mercy Healthcare expansion, the new Muskegon County Jail and Juvenile Transition Center, a variety of manufacturing facility expansions or remodels and the proposed Harris Hospitality at Pere Marquette will likely provide construction and skilled trades opportunities.
