Dear StudentWelcome to your BIMM Dublin 2015/16 prospectus. Inside you’ll find everything you need to make an informed choice about the next stage of your education. Since BIMM Dublin was established three years ago, our aim has been to help every aspiring musician and music-industry professional achieve their personal goals via experience, professionalism and qualifications that will lead to a sustainable career in the music industry. We’re located on Francis Street and The Coombe in south Dublin city centre, and are part of the BIMM Group of colleges with centres in Brighton, Bristol, London and Manchester – each with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. We currently offer two courses: the BA (Hons) in Commercial Modern Music (DT506) and the CPD Diploma in Professional Musicianship, both validated by DIT. The BA (Hons) course is the first degree of its kind to be offered in Ireland. It’s a four-year performance-based programme equipping you with the tools to succeed in a sustained career as a musician. The CPD Diploma is a part-time one-year programme, ideal for anyone who wishes to further their musical abilities, but can’t make the commitment or lacks the entry requirements to undertake a full-time programme. Students on these programmes specialise in one of five streams – Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals or Songwriting.

In September 2014 we’ll commence teaching a new private BA (Hons) Music Production degree validated by the University of West London, a validating partner with the BIMM Group since 1996. The BA (Hons) in Music Production is a specialist vocational programme designed for those wishing to pursue a range of music industry roles such as producer, live sound technician, sound engineer, film and television technician and computer music designer with the added bonus of studying alongside the largest cohort of contemporary music students in Ireland, thus opening up a wealth of networking opportunities.

As a BIMM Dublin student you’ll be taught by a top-class team of tutors and will have the opportunity to attend Masterclasses with internationally renowned artists. All BIMM Dublin students are registered with DIT, giving them access to a wide range of services including learning support, careers, accommodation service, library, IT facilities, finance assistance and leisure and sports facilities. All of our courses are designed to help you reach your full potential as a musician. If you want to get on in music, you need to get connected, and there’s no better place to do this than at BIMM. We look forward to welcoming you as a future student.

Yours sincerely,

This is a part-time (4.5 hours a week), 1-year programme, aimed at musicians with semi-professional ability. It is designed to help you reach your full potential on your instrument or voice. The course may allow for progression onto a BA Honours programme and is validated by the Dublin Institute of Technology.

18

PROGRESSION ROUTE BIMM Dublin BA (Hons) in Commercial Modern Music – Students who have successfully completed the BIMM Dublin CPD Diploma in Professional Musicianship validated by DIT, will be awarded 30 ECTS credits, and will also be deemed to have complied with the minimum academic requirements for entry to the BA (Hons) in Commercial Modern Music (DT506) programme. Such students must apply through the CAO for DT506 as non-standard applicants.

A Level 7 (Ordinary) or Level 8 (Honours) degree.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be 17 on 1st January in the year of entry. Applicants should have passed a full module at Level 5. This is equivalent to one subject at Leaving Certificate or one module at FETAC Level 5. Applicants also need to attend an audition so that we can assess their current playing standard. We expect applicants to demonstrate Grade 6 or equivalent performance skills on relevant instrument or voice, and the ability to improvise at the same level.

MODULESINSTRUMENTAL/VOCALMusic Styles

This module is designed for instrumental students to complement BA1 Module Styles 1 by addressing the area of contemporary styles. Having an understanding of a wide range of contemporary styles, creating inventive and musically effective parts and being able to perform authentically will increase students’ versatility and employability in the music industry.

Instrument Techniques

This module is designed to equip instrumental students with a secure grounding in technique applied to their instrument or voice. This will enable them to deliver their performances creatively, with fluency and to minimise health risks. The focus will be on establishing strong fundamentals of technique, and how to develop them securely and safely through effective practice routines.

Sight Reading

This module is designed to equip students with the fundamental skills required to read and perform music notation on their instrument. This will be achieved by studying the essential concepts of reading for your instrument while working towards the study of existing pieces. This aims to enable you to access and understand a wide range of notated material.

SONGWRITINGMusicianship

Musicianship supports the development of skills in key areas: music theory, ear training, production analysis and song analysis. In theory and ear-training classes students will consider key theoretical concepts and their application in popular music including interval and chord identification and harmony, rhythm and pulse and chord/scale relationships.

Song Stylistics

In this module the student has the opportunity to explore specific composition and arrangement techniques when working in a wide range of genres. Not only will this allow them to more fully understand the mechanics of songwriting but it will also provide a heightened ability when working within their own personal style.

Songwriting

Students will study and develop the fundamental skills of writing original songs covering aspects such as harmonic progression, melodic contour, lyric creation, rhythmic lyric structure and song form. Through studying tools and techniques they will learn how to write melodies, how melodic rhythm influences rhyme, and the dynamic relationships between melody and harmony. There will also be an analysis of popular songs to provide a robust approach to learning this craft.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

Entry to the course is granted to applicants based on a combination of an audition and Leaving Cert (or equivalent) points. Applicants can gain up to a maximum of 600 points at audition, which will then be combined with their Leaving Cert points. The points for entry in 2013 were 900. However, this is subject to change. The minimum academic requirements are two Higher Level C3s and four Ordinary Level D3s at Leaving Cert, or equivalent. The A Level equivalents to our Leaving Certificate entry requirements are the same as DIT which are three A Levels or two A Levels plus 2 GC(S)E.

FETAC Level 5 or higher with five distinctions or higher may also be accepted as equivalent to the minimum entry requirement.

AUDITIONS:All applicants must also attend an audition. We will contact all applicants by email to arrange their audition a few weeks after the CAO deadline, and auditions will run until May.

The format of the audition depends on the stream you wish to study during your time at BIMM Dublin. You may choose only one stream — Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals or Songwriting. This is what you will be assessed on. We are looking for a basic semi-professional level of performance at your audition. We welcome self-taught musicians and the ability to read music is not essential. Nonetheless, we do expect a decent level of gigging experience. We encourage individuality and personality in a musician but also want to make sure that you are not ultimately limited by poor technique.

The audition process will include an hour-long presentation where you will learn about all aspects of life at BIMM Dublin and the courses we offer. This is an integral part of the process which you must attend; otherwise your audition is not complete. BIMM staff will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have.

You will be sent a confirmation letter with some more detail which will also include the time and date of your audition. All auditions will require musicians to perform a piece, as well as demonstrate their standard of musicianship, technique, aural perception and theory.
