“JPM Week” is all about connections…connecting R&D innovators with the investment community; connecting service providers with current and prospective clients; and reconnecting with industry colleagues, friends and acquaintances. The appetite for deal-making has never been stronger. We’ve seen the biotech markets bounce back in a big way these last couple of months. In fact, small R&D-stage biotechs have been on a tear since October – up 50 percent. So, to our members, thank you for all that you do.

It has been nearly 70 years since Watson and Crick discovered the double helix DNA. It’s remarkable to consider how far we’ve traveled. What’s coming out of biotech labs today in terms of genomic breakthroughs is like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

Cell therapy. Gene therapy. Immunotherapy. Precision medicine. We’ve entered the dawn of a new golden age of medicine. Small labs and emerging biotechs are pushing three-quarters of new medicines through the FDA pipeline.

In 2020, it’s going to take all hands on deck to keep our industry on the right path and safeguard the future of medicine. We hope you’ll be part of this movement. Welcome to JPM Week 2020On behalf of The California Life Sciences Association, I would like to welcome everyone to the impactful events and discussions taking place in and around the 2019 JP Morgan Healthcare Conference.

Here in California – the fifth largest economy in the world – we are proud of our life sciences sector that spans world-renowned research institutions, entrepreneurial startups, academia and innovative global corporations advancing ground-breaking science for patients. California’s life sciences sector continues to be a medical and economic powerhouse. More than 3,600 life sciences companies directly and indirectly employ 958,000 Californians and contribute a staggering $178 billion to California’s overall economy. This sector led the nation in venture capital investments – a total of $7.6 billion – providing critical support for continuing breakthroughs. We put over 1,300 new therapies in the pipeline. Our life sciences ecosystem thrives and continues to be a beacon and a model not just for the rest of the United States but around the globe.

As the statewide trade association for life sciences in California, the work CLSA does has significant impact for every member of our life sciences community, including:

• Leading federal, state and local advocacy for effective public policies to help safeguard California’s place as the leader in biomedical, agricultural, and environmental research and development;

• Convening senior executives, scientists, educators, government officials and other professionals for up to 100 statewide thought leadership, community-building and networking events in 2019;

• Hosting CLSA’s annual Pantheon DiNA™ Awards to honor the bold thinkers – founders, innovators, patients and next-generation leaders – who courageously drive advances in our sector and whose vision creates the impact that California companies are making here and around the globe; and

• Supporting the next wave of life sciences through the California Life Sciences Institute’s FAST program, which has resulted in more than 7300 advisory hours valued at over $1,600,000, over $1 billion in raised capital, and 397 new jobs for the 65 emerging companies who have participated since Fall 2013.
