Tony Cunningham gets Wakefield’s Spion Kop all to himself

Welcome to the Harry Williams Riverside Stadium this afternoon for anotherknock-out fixture.

Our visitors today are from Worksop, who will be playing the Rams for thevery first time. We hope everyone who has made the journey up enjoys their brief stay with

us – result apart of course! – and have a safe journey home afterwards.Town will arrive here as slight favourites as a result of them playing in the

higher division, but we all know that in cup competitions, league positionsaren’t always that important.Same can happen in league games. When Lancaster City arrived here eleven

days ago, they arrived on the back of a 6-0 mauling of New Mills, and unbeatenin league action.

What odds would you have received on a Rammy win by the same score-line?!So, whilst Worksop are the higher placed club, we certainly won’t be daunted

as we look towards making further progress after the victory at WarringtonTown.RATTLING AROUNDAfter that excellent win against Lancaster, we ventured over the Pennines to

Wakefield last Saturday.Whilst we returned with all three points, the score-line barely reflected our su-periority.However, of more interest was the fact that the crowd was listed at just 64.This in a stadium that holds over 10,000!There must have been 50 Rammy supporters there, so where is the support,

in what is a basically rugby league town, for association football?It must be so demoralising to put in all that effort yet fail to attract the local

followers.Don’t get me wrong. I do enjoy visiting Belle Vue. As a grounds buff, it’s a

brilliant old stadium, with a great history. Not too long ago, I re-watched “ThisSporting Life”, a ‘60’s film featuring Richard Harris, based on the goings-on ata rugby league club. This was all filmed at Belle Vue, and it was fascinating tolook at the two stands that are no longer there.In all probability, Belle Vue will not be there for much longer, although there

can be two reasons for this!The rugby club have been looking for a new modern stadium in the town

for some time now, but over the last couple of years, the Wildcats have lurchedfrom one financial disaster to another. So whilst a new ground may well be onthe horizon, I guess it all depends upon the club actually surviving.Whether Wakefield FC will be allowed to follow them to the new ground or

not is doubtful.This season they have been locked out of the hospitalityboxes behind the goal, and have had to relocate to the teahut alongside the pitch. There doesn’t seem to be much cosi-ness in the relationship.Which tends to confirm the discussion I had when we were

up in Barrow recently. I asked an official up there why the twoclubs (football and rugby league) don’t pool their resourcesand share one stadium, as both are struggling financially.“It doesn’t work”, he explained. “Well, Huddersfeld , Wigan

and Hull seem to accommodate both codes quite nicely”, Ireplied.Then it was suggested I look at the experiences at St.Helens,

and Leigh. I suppose I can add Wakefield to the list, so pointproved!But to see Rammy play at such a massive stadium in front of a

woeful crowd really was quite surreal.It’s when we turn up at such venues that I ap-

preciate the support that we attract down hereat the HWRS. Other clubs must look on with acertain amount of envy.Enjoy your non-league football!

accomplishedyouthWe welcome worksop town to the Harry Williams River-

side Stadium for this FA Trophy tie in what we are expectingto be a really keenly fought contest and another chance topit our witts against a team from a higher division.Worksop are mid table in the Premier Division with a

league record of p12 w6 d2 l4 so have had a simlair startas ourselves.We come into the game on the back of a great run. Our

latest victory on Wednesday night against Atherton LRmade it two defeats in the last thirteen games (one of whichwas a 94 minute winner) which after our slow start is show-ing signs that we are really starting to click into gear.We used the Lancashire Trophy game against Atherton

to give some of the younger lads some minutes and werereally pleased with how the slotted into the side. After a bitof an edgy start, once they settled, they looked the part andwe are pleased with their progress to date.

The squad is starting to look really accomplished, withsome good strength in depth. At the time of writing we areonly without the services of Phil Edghill due to his lastestsetback at wakefield. Edgy will be given all the time heneeds to regain full fitness and I’m sure he still has a bigpart to play in our season.Again im sure you'll get behind the lads today as you al-

ways do, and we will do our best to give you something tocheer about and will go out to get the right result.Enjoy the gameCoyr....- Glenn

Ramsbottom United progressed to thenext round of the County Cup with a rela-tively easy victory over North West Countiesside Atherton LR, despite a spirited effortfrom the visitors.

Joint managers Anthony Johnson andBernard Morley introduced a number ofyoungsters to the side, and they all per-formed admirably on the night.

Matthew Warburton looked solid at theback alongside Andy Dawson in the first half,and Billy Priestley in the second.

Former Bury FC youngsters MatthewPrickett and Tommy Toth competed well,Prickett with some fine wing play, and Tothwith a non-stop midfield performance,whilst up front Callum Smith deservedly gothis name on the score-sheet with two goals.After a tentative opening, the visitors had

the first chance on ten minutes when a lowball in from the left by Gareth Shaw wasturned away for a corner from which GrantShenton held Craig Dickinson’s header.

A minute later, some fine trickery by LeeGaskell on the left set up Prickett, but hisheader was blocked.Warburton was unlucky to see his header

clip the bar and bounce over, before Smith,through on goal, was denied by the keeper,as was Gaskell whose follow-up suffered thesame fate.Tom Brooks twisted his way into the area,

only to be denied by Andrew Farrimond inthe LR goal, as the home side began to exertpressure on the visitors defence.

LR still had their moments, and RobertMolyneux was unlucky to see his pile-driversail inches past the far post with Shentonwell beaten.

For the Rams, Prickett came close toopening the scoring when his low drivebounced off the inside of the post and rico-cheted along the goal-line before beingcleared. Brooks was denied by Farrimond,and Smith had a shot hacked off the line, asthe home side sought the goal their domi-nance deserved.It finally arrived on 39 minutes. A high ball

into the box was expertly brought down byBrooks, and he turned his marker before fir-

ing home past Farrimond and in by the post.The Rams almost increased the lead be-

fore the break, when Prickett fired straightat the custodian, who was then relieved tosee an attempted header clearance fromTom Cahill graze the outside of the keeper’spost.The second half had barely started before

Ramsbottom doubled the lead.The ball fell kindly for Smith, and he had

no trouble blasting the ball home from tenyards.

Ben Hardcastle tested Shenton from 20yards as LR attempted to regain a foot-hold,before Lee Gaskell twice looked to extendthe lead.He firstly dribbled along the penalty area

before unleashing a shot that just clearedthe bar, then was inches away from convert-ing a Prickett cross after good work by theyoungster.

Substitute Dominic Smalley danced hisway into the area before firing just off target,whilst, at the other end, Shenton deniedMark Adams at close range.On 68 minutes, Adams did manage to find

the net when he created space in the box, tobring the visitors back into the game.

Smith should have extended the Ramslead minutes later, when he did all the hardwork racing into the box, but as Farrimondcame out, he lofted the ball over the keeper,but also over the bar.

Atherton looked for an equaliser, withShaw trying his luck from 30 yards, beforeShenton was forced into a brilliant save toturn a close range volley over for a cornerfrom which McKillop saw his headerblocked.

A minute later, on 78 minutes, the homeside made the game safe.

A great run down the right by JordanHulme saw him release the ball to the un-marked Smith, and he made no mistake incollecting his second and the Rams’ third ofthe night. Brooks twice came close to extending the

lead, but on the night the home side haddone enough to deservedly move into thenext round.

smith delivers

I am writing this after the 3-1 home victory against Atherton LR. We ob-viously had a number of changes for this game and I am happy to con-firm that these were tactical changes and not down to any injuriessustained by the missing players. Joel Pilkington and Danny Warrender were given the night off with anumber of first team players also on the bench to allow some of ourunder 21 and 18s to feature in the game. Andy Dawson recoveredenough from the hamstring strain he picked up at Warrington to startthis fixture and only came off at half time to look after the injury andprevent overdoing it before Saturday. Gary Stopforth came off midwaythrough the second half as a precaution and Lee Gaskell came off havingpicked up a knock on his Achilles although neither injury will be badenough to keep either from The Worksop game.Overall we have benefited, as a squad, from a quieter week. With havingour midweek game on a Wednesday night it has meant that we didn'ttrain Tuesday evening and won't be doing our normal Thursday nighttraining. Although these training sessions are crucial for fitness and co-hesion, having no training gives everyone some extra time off to restany knocks or sore bits they are carrying and also gives us all a breakfrom one another. The first few months of the season see us playingtwo games a week meaning that as a squad of players and staff wespend a lot of time together (seeing each other more than our actualfamilies on occasion) which in a positive manner makes us tight knit andgreat friends but also makes us overly comfortable with each other andmeans people aren't adverse to telling each other what they think. Onoccasion this happens on the pitch which makes it look like we aren'tplaying as a team when really it is just an extension of the dressing roomwhere if something needs saying we are more than happy to say it. We are all looking forward to Saturdays tie with Worksop in the FA Tro-phy and with a fully fit squad available for selection it should give usevery opportunity for victory.- Katy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Rammy are now the proud owners of a Hands-only CPRmachine, as advertised by cockney meat-head VinnieJones opposite. Katy and Darren have been along to thetraining session where they studied situations such asthe Muamba incident at Bolton. Apparently you havejust three minutes to get a failed heart started, andthe quick-thinking Bolton physio was performingCPR after just 17 seconds, with the defibrilator doingits thing in just over a minute. The defibrilator is located in Tony’s hut, just insidethe players’ entrance.
Worksop Town was formed well over 150 years ago in 1861, but the first recorded items referring toits existence were dated 1873.
At the end of the 2007-08 season, Worksop Town was locked out of its Sandy Lane ground by theleaseholder, who later was to sell the ground to Parramore FC from Sheffield. 2008-09 was spent at Huck-nall Town FC and after a difficult first half of the season whilst the club were reeling from losing theground, manager Peter Rinkcavage turned the fortunes of the club around and results were much im-proved after the New Year, maintaining the club’s Premier League status.2009-10 saw the Tigers play their home games at Ilkeston Town which became a turbulant season for
the tigers. It started with promise and ended almost in disaster, players coming and going because of fi-nancial problems. John Hepworth [chairman] decided that he had done all he could do and handed theclub over to Jason Clark.
2010-11 saw Jason at the helm and under his guidance we had a good season, playing at RetfordUnited. He appointed Martin McIntosh as first team manager part way through the season and only justfailed to get a play off place.2011-12 The Tigers were back in town after three years on the road, back at Sandy Lane, sharing with
the new owners Parramore Sports and hoping to do well. A Sheffield Senior Cup victory over Frickley atHillsborough augured well for the future.Last season brought another new manager in Simon Clark looking to improve on recent performances,
but after looking good for a play off place the team faded away to finish 9th and he departed. This seasonwill be the first for new Manager Mark Shaw who will concentrate on more local players while looking toimprove on last years record.
1 - 2Belle Vue20th October 2012Att: 87Rammy Goals: Ayres (62), own goal (65)Wakefield Goals: Bleau (8)
The Rams travelled to the home of Wake-field Trinity Wildcats Rugby League club totake on a struggling Wakefield team.
However, it needed a determined secondhalf display which eventually saw them grindout a hard-earned three points.
The first half produced a disjointed per-formance by the visitors, and it saw them goin at the break a goal in arrears.
The home side pounced as early as theeighth minute. Following a series of corners,one of which saw Ian Flannery scramble theball off the goal-line, Bleau finally blasted theball home from ten yards to give the hostsan early boost.
Within a minute the scores should havebeen levelled when Lee Gaskell missed agreat chance with a header from DominicSmalley’s inch-perfect cross.
That was the first of a number of squan-dered chances as the Rams attack failed tofind their recent form.
On 21 minutes Gaskell made the most ofa loose ball to round the keeper, but hiscross to Grant Spencer saw the Hyde loaneebundled off the ball as he was about tostrike, and the referee ignored his plea for apenalty.
Jon Robinson raced into the box, but al-though his shot beat the keeper, it also beatthe gaping goal and found the side-netting.
Danny Warrender was inches away fromconverting a Spencer cross, whilst MarkAyres twice went close, firstly with a headerthen when he couldn’t quite control the ballat the far post following a corner.
At the other end, Thornton tested GrantShenton in the Rams goal from 20 yards,whilst the keeper brilliantly kept the scoredown when he tipped a fierce free-kick ontothe bar and over for a corner.
Although chances had been created, thehalf-time whistle sounded to end a disap-pointing performance from a team arrivingon the back of three successive victories.That was increased to four as a result of a
total change about in the second half.The Rams upped the tempo and the home
side spent most of the second period in their
own half as the visitors at last showed whatthey are capable of.
The game turned on two goals within thespace of four minutes.
As at Farsley a few weeks ago, a 60thminute substitution resulted in a 61st minutegoal. Spencer was replaced by Phil Dean ,and within a minute the scores were level.
A perfect lob by Flannery on the edge ofthe box saw Mark Ayres out-jump his markerand he sent a well-judged header loopingover the advancing keeper and into the backof the net.
On 64 minutes, a decisive run down theleft by Dean saw his low cross somehowevade three of his team-mates in front ofgoal, but a minute later the Rams took thelead.A long throw from Warrender was headed
goalwards by Flannery, and Bleau headedfirmly into his own net to negate the goal hehad scored at the other end.
From then on it was a case of how manymore could the Rams score.
As it happened, it was none, but it wasn’tthrough lack of effort.
On 70 minutes Phil Edghill ploughed hisway through only to be thwarted by thekeeper, Gary Stopforth fired inches wide witha 30 yard free-kick, whilst Smalley wriggledhis way into the area, but instead of squaringthe ball, he went for glory but screwed theball wide of the far post.With five minutes to go, the home keeper
was lucky to stay on the field. A well-judgedthrough ball saw Gaskell chasing the ballgoal-wards, as Bennett raced out of his goaland handled just outside the box. A lenientreferee only produced a yellow card, andfrom the free-kick the keeper brilliantlytipped Stopforth’s effort round the post as itwas about to squeeze into the top corner.
Flannery then equalled Gaskell’s first halfmiss when he completely misjudged aheader from six yards out, but the final whis-tle blew after that, and the Rams second halfperformance had earned them the threepoints that looked distinctly unlikely 45 min-utes earlier.
Rammy United’s speedy winger cum carpetsalesman Phil Dean sprinted to the rescuewhen a mugger snatched £3000 from a pen-sioner in the street.The 61-year-old woman had just with-drawn £3000 in cash from the Barclays Bankon Long Street in Middleton town centrewhen she was targeted. She had taken outhe money to give to her son, to help him buya car, but was attacked by the mugger as shewalked back to meet her husband, who wasparked nearby on Water Street. Shockedstaff at nearby The Carpet Factory saw theman push his victim to the ground and grabthe envelope containing the money.Two carpet fitters, who were stood outsidethe premises on Water Street, immediatelygave chase, closely followed by Phil Dean,eventually caught up with the thief, whohanded over the envelope before fleeingdown Wood Street.Phil said, “I didn’t really know what wasgoing on at first. I just saw the other ladsrunning outside so I followed them. I saw thewoman was on the floor and the guy runningoff, so I chased him. He looked like he could-n’t run much further and saw I was catchingup so he turned round and gave me themoney. I didn’t really stop to think that hemight have something on him. The adrena-line just kicked in.”Phil, who lives in Bury, said he hopes the
thug can be brought to justice. He said, “He’sjust a coward targeting a woman on her ownlike that. I’m just glad I was able to get themoney back for her. She was obviously reallyshaken up, but she was really thankful to allof us.”Stuart Johnson, manager at the store for25 years, said, “I’m really proud of them.“The lady is a customer of ours and oncewe saw she was in distress we didn’t have tothink about rushing out to help her. Threethousand pounds is a lot of money to any-one.“The robber was just unlucky one of ourlads is a footballer and is lightning quick. If Iwas 25 years younger I would have been outthere with them!”Police are hunting the mugger and are ap-pealing for anyone else who may have wit-nessed the incident, at around 2:15pm onFriday, September 13th, to come forward.The man was white, about 6ft 2ins, slimand mid-20s. He had chipped teeth, a gauntface, and was wearing a grey hooded top.Det Con Charlotte Humpries said: “Thank-fully, this man was deterred and ran offempty-handed, but we are still working hardto try and trace him, and bring him to justicefor this robbery.“We would urge any witnesses who sawwhat happened to call us.”
phil deanfast as ****
Good afternoon everyone! Yes, its the voice from the deep south again(yeeeeeee-haaaaa etc etc). Sadly, I am not in evidence today but will be upin a couple of weeks time for a week or so, taking in the home games againstNew Mills and FC United of Manchester. Really looking forward to it!
It continues to amaze me when I watch various news items that so manyclubs are struggling to exist. I only have to look a few miles from home tosee many such instances of clubs not managing their finances and totteringon the edge of the abyss.
Two clubs within the Southampton city boundary, AFC Totton and Sholing,are both two such instances. Totton, who only a couple of years ago playedin the Second Round of the FA Cup and were live on ITV, now sit secondbottom of the table having faced a very uncertain future during the summerand are still nowhere near out of the woods.
While Sholing took the decision to drop back a couple of leagues - to theequivalent of the NWCFL - to try and rebuild again. And then, in the newsjust last week, saw the closure of Hinckley Town FC, crippled by debts thatmake your toes curl.
And it makes you think .... why??? Why do clubs, with little income, chasethe bigger bucks? For some, it has worked. But there are far far too manyinstances of others vanishing in a cloud of debt. I refer the honourable gen-tlemen to Rossendale United FC to name but one.
However, having seen the general raising of eyebrows and rolling of eyeswhen I mention to anyone willing to listen about my affinity to Rammy, thenI can understand it. Non-league football is not universally respected and, aswe saw with the crowd at Wakefield where only a handful of fans were sup-porting the home side, being far outnumbered by our visiting ones, thenyou can see why some clubs face such uncertain futures.
We hear it time and again at the HWRS about Harry being a tight so-and-so. But, in the face of all around the non-league scene, he keeps the reignsvery well and would never let our club get to that state.
Thankfully, we have a very stable club and a club on the way up witha talented squad and superb managers (hands off Bury ... Bern and Jonnoare ours!!!!).
We are very lucky to support such a club. For years and years, theclub didn't get the results on the park but there was no attempt tothrow extreme fortunes at it in search of improvements. Could wehave done - of course, but we might not have the team right now.
Which is why I am so proud to say that I am a Ramsbottom Unitedsupporter, even from the comfort of my flat in Southampton or ona rugby touch line somewhere.
RAMMY IN EXILE - RICHARD ISAACS
COMING UPRammy v Prescot Cables, Tues 22nd October, 7:45pm
Rammy face the notoriously troublesome Prescot Cables atthe Harry Williams Riverside on Tuesday night. This game comeshot on the heels of a decent run, which has seen the visitors earndraws away at Northwich, Bamber Bridge and Darlington, with a4-3 home defeat of Radcliffe Borough thrown in. The defeat awayat Prescot last season saw Rammy’s grip on a play-off place startto slip, so the team will be hoping it’s pay-back time on Tuesday.
Harrogate Railway Athletic v Rammy, Sat 26th October, 3pmIt’s one of those away treks that elicits a groan from all Rammy
fans, though we ought to be thankful that it’s not midweek likethe imminent trip to Darlington! One consolation is that it’s anhour longer for Cammell Laird to get to Harrogate (and justabout anywhere!); another is that for some inexplicable reasonthe league put Scarborough in the Southern Division, saving usanother long trip.
Railway Athletic play their home games at the aptly named‘Station View’ in the Starbeck area of Harrogate, postcode HG27JA. If you end up asking for directions then don’t forget thatthere are two teams in Harrogate, and The Other One is theslightly better known Harrogate Town, in the Conference North.Google Maps suggests a couple of routes - mainly motorway,
involving the M62 and A1(M), which it reckons takes 1hr 24mins,and then The Pretty Way along the A59 past Skipton and thosemilitary golf ball things at Blubberhouses (where the governmentdo all their spying on our emails).Personally I prefer the A59 way, provided there are no tractors
around, and if you stay on the A59 all the way through Harrogate(straight on at the little pub roundabout and then left when youget to that big open green bit in the middle of Harrogate) thentake a left after 300m into Station View... and you’re there!The other way involves taking junction 47 off the A1(M) North,
following the A59 through Knaresborough on towards Harro-gate. You’ll pass Harrogate Golf Course on the left, thencross the railway after 200m or so. Keep your eyespeeled and on the right, immediately after the railway,you’ll see Station View - and from its name I imag-ine you’ll see Starbeck Station as well! It alwaysseems a little bit fiddlier and a bit further that way,but each to their own.Good luck!
EDITORIAL - SUPPORTERS CLUBWhile I remember, I’d just like to mention that should today’s game end in
a draw then the Prescot match on Tuesday will be postponed, and we’ll trekdown to Worksop on Wednesday evening for the replay.We’d like to extend a warm welcome to today’s mascot Thomas Sharphouse.
We hope he enjoys his visit, and gets to lead the team out to an historic win.So here we are, yet another cup game with a hefty pay-out for the winners.
£2,700 this time, which would be a great addition to the £14,000 or so thatthe team have already added to the coffers with their hard work in this com-petition, and in the FA Cup. Increasing the prize money for the earlier stagesof the FA Cup has probably made the competition more important to thelower leagues than it is to the top flight teams. Suits me!I don’t know if you read the disappointing headlines about Barrow’s trip to
Atherstone in the FA Cup. The crowd problems at half-time in that game nodoubt made the national press because there was so little else going on infootball at the time - isn’t it always the way that when the opportunity forsome positive publicity comes along, some idiots go and mess it up.I had a look at Atherstone’s normal crowd size, and it appears that they get
around 200 or so for their games in the Midland Combination. The visit ofBarrow saw almost 900 attending, and no doubt a handful of those were therejust for a bit of a kick-off. It seems that a little bit of success at non-league level encourages the trou-
ble-causers to come along, and this was certainly the case when I was involvedat Banbury United. We managed to get the crowds up from about 250 toaround-about 1000, which meant we had a tremendous atmosphere at games,could bring in really high-quality players, and ended up being a huge talkingpoint for miles around. Sadly this didn’t pass by some of the local scrotes.Banbury was always known as the place to stop off on your way home if theopposition fans and police hadn’t been up for a fight, but we also found our-selves playing host to some of Oxford United’s trouble-makers who’d eitherbeen banned from their ground, or just discovered that the Southern Leaguehad no segregation.
I remember one particular game against table-topping Kings Lynn, wherea section of ‘fans’ we’d never seen before waded in and started clobberingaway fans at random. Now I’m not saying that it was journeymen hoolies atAtherstone, but it does seemquite a common occurencewhen teams start doing well. Fin-gers crossed we never get thiskind of silliness going on atRammy, and if we ever did thenI’d like to hope that the decenthome fans would help stamp itout pretty quickly - which is whatwe managed to do at Banbury.
I’m also quite relieved thatwe didn’t find ourselves inBarrow’s place, having tofight the Atherstonegobshites - those daysare thankfully but a dis-tant memory for mostof us, and we’re franklynot interested.Right, that’s enough of
that. Bring on the Rammy,and bring on that £2,700
prize money!
