Foreword
The gold potential of the Central Gneiss Belt (Grenville Province) within the Ministry of Natural Resources' Algonquin Region is unknown. A flurry of activity occurred in the late 1800's and early 1900's, resulting in a producer (the McGown Mine) near Parry Sound. There has been little exploration for gold since then, due mainly to the complex deformation and high metamorphic grade of the rocks in the area.
This report summarizes the results of the first stage of a project to evaluate the gold potential of the Central Gneiss Belt within the Algonquin Region. Initial results indicate the presence of gold and it is hoped that subsequent reports will provide a better understanding of the gold potential of the area.
This publication should be of interest to the minerals industry, particularly the prospectors who are attempting to explore for gold in the study area.

The Gold Potential of the Huntsville-Parry Sound Area of Ontario
by l l l D.J. Villard, R. Keevil, and A. Hogg
ABSTRACT
The Central Gneiss Belt of the Grenville Province has never been adequately evaluated for its gold potential. A flurry of activity took place in the period from 1890 to 1910, but since then there has only been minor exploration.
The gold project currently being conducted by the Resident Geologist in Huntsville was initiated in 1981 to evaluate an area bounded by Georgian Bay, Algonquin Park, North Bay, and Gravenhurst with the intent to locate, map and sample reported gold occurrences within this area. To date 39 have been located; and a few indicate the presence of gold. This report presents preliminary results.
INTRODUCTION
In the fall of 1981 MNR, Huntsville began to determine the gold potential of the Central Gneiss Belt (Grenville Province) within the Algonquin Region. The area has had many drawbacks in its appeal to the gold explorationist. Among these are: minimal past exploration, an extremely complex geology and few geological maps. Recent improvement in the geological data base came with the mapping by A. Davidson of the Geological Survey of Canada.
The potential for gold in the area was thought to be low, mainly because of the high grade of metamorphism. However, the McGown Mine near Parry Sound shows that gold does occur in these rocks. Coleman (1900) reported values of gold up to 0.25 oz./ton from underground and free gold was beaten into finger rings. Recently there has been a reported association of gold with graphite deposits in the area.
The two main objectives: firstly, a rapid evaluation of reported gold occurrences in the Central Gneiss Belt which lie in the Algonquin Region. Results of this form this report. The second objective is to target areas within the Central Gneiss Belt that have a greater potential for gold.

GEOLOGY
Up until 1980, the knowledge of the Central Gneiss Belt of the Grenville geological Province lying west of Algonquin Park was extremely limited. Only Lount Township had been mapped in detail (Satterly, 1956). In 1980, A. Davidson of the Geological Survey of Canada undertook reconnaissance mapping east from Georgian Bay (Davidson and Morgan, 1981). S. Limbers of the Royal Ontario Museum has mapped in the North Bay area, in Renfrew County and is currently working in the Huntsville area. The area ... "has been considered by many to be, for the most part, an intractable 'sea of gneiss 1 , monotonous and at fairly uniform high metamorphic grade, of far less rewarding prospect for study, and certainly of little economic interest". (Davidson and Morgan, 1981). Preliminary results of Davidson's field work can best be summed up by the abstract of his 1982 paper. "Continuing field work in southwestern Grenville Province between the Grenville Front Tectonic Zone and the Central Metasedimentary Belt has revealed a network of continuous zones of various kinds of tectonite, along which predominantly northwest-directed movement has taken place. Tectonite zones outline domains and subdomains of distinctive character, and tend to truncate lithology, structure and metamorphism on one side. Domains with relatively high pressure granulite facies metamorphism, and eclogite-like rocks and sapphirine-bearing assemblages in tectonic inclusions suggest that tectonism occurred at deep crustal level. Sense of movement indicates emplacement of allochthonous crustal segments by northwest-directed ductile shear and thrusting, with maximum displacement along the tectonite zones. Such a mechanism is compatible with a Himalaya-type model for development of a thickened crust, and has implications concerning equation of rocks and orogenic events on opposing sides of the Grenville Front Tectonic Zone". (Davidson et al, 1982).
The complex geology of the Central Gneiss Belt makes it difficult to explore for gold.
EXPLORATION ACTIVITY
Past work resulted in numerous pits throughout the area. Around the turn of the century the most interesting deposit was the McGown Mine near Parry Sound. "The existence of mineral in the district of Parry Sound was first noted in 1894, when a farmer named McGown discovered traces of free gold on his land situated about two miles out of town. Sufficient quantities of this precious metal were secured to enable a local jeweller to hammer a few souvenir finger rings, and the owner of the property felt justified in forming a company to exploit for gold". (The Canadian Mining Review, 1900).
Coleman (1894) stated that: "the gold occurs as small nuggets and scales in vitreous quartz associated with copper sulphides, chalcocite or copper glance, bornite or peacock ore, a little copper pyrites, and their decomposition products, oxides of iron and malachite ... the gold may be found in quartz, in the sulphides, and between the two. An assay of the bornite gave $4 per ton of gold". Although the author has obtained gold values of up to 0.15 oz. per ton, the highest reported values were 0.25. oz per ton (Coleman 1899) obtained from the inclined shaft. Coleman (1899) also reports silver values of about 1.0 oz. per ton .
- 3 -
Many of the remaining occurrences had little work performed on them. Generally one or two pits or trenches were dug on a property that showed some potential for gold, indicated by rusty rocks, quartz veining or the presence of sulphides.
How much gold was actually returned is virtually unknown. Verbal records report men were able to make wages from the gold they took out of the ground, but written records are almost non-existent. Only a detailed evaluation of these occurrences will determine if there is gold associated with these old workings. This study lists minor gold from several occurrences, but most showed no gold. The "nugget effect" combined with the few samples analyzed would make it easy to miss gold present.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The initial objective of the gold project was to conduct a preliminary examination of all the reported gold occurrences within the Central Gneiss Belt of the Algonquin Region of the Ministry of Natural Resources. The initial identification of many of these reported occurrences came from the existing literature, but many were realized from conversations with the local people (both prospectors and non-prospectors). Once identified, an occurrence was located in the field (a difficult task at times, as several were not found) , briefly mapped and sampled. A summary of those occurrences that were located is presented in Appendix I. Appendix II lists those locations from other projects that had gold analyses. Appendices III and IV lists those occurrences that have not been searched for to date.
It is hoped that by publishing details on the location of many of these gold occurrences, prospectors will be able to go out and carry out a more thorough evaluation. It is also intended, as part of this project, to carry out a more detailed evaluation of some of the occurrences already visited.
The second objective of this project was to outline either general or specific areas in the Central Gneiss Belt of the Algonquin Region where there might be some possibility 'of detecting gold. Part of this objective has already been achieved through the results presented in this report, but it is hoped that when this project is completed, we will have a better understanding of the gold potential of the study area. As a means of meeting this objective, several things will be carried out, as summarized below:
- Several of the occurrences already visited will be re-examined in more detail.
- Several of the known graphite deposits will be studied in detail to determine if there is any association of gold with the graphite. The graphite deposit in Laurier Township was initially examined for its gold potential, as indicated by the numerous pits sunk in the rusty gneisses.
- Several of the rivers in the area will be panned for gold to confirm or disprove the rumours that gold is being detected.
- 4 -
Selected geological units will be briefly examined to determine their potential for hosting gold mineralization. An example might be the meta-arkoses northwest of Parry Sound.
Sulphide deposits in the vicinity of identified structural breaks will be checked for their possible gold association.
RESULTS
Thirty-nine reported gold occurrences have been located to date. For each of these, the location, access and geology has been briefly described, as well as, several samples collected for analysis. An initial examination of the analytical results would seem to indicate that most of these occurrences have little, if any, potential for gold. This may be the case, but one should remember that gold is a difficult element to detect, particularly when only 2 or 3 samples were analyzed from each occurrence.
The initial exploration on these occurrences may have been as a result of the detection of visible gold and it would be easy to miss this in a couple of samples. Many of these occurrences will be re-evaluated in the next stage of the project, but it is hoped that at least the re-locating of many of these occurrences will stimulate the prospectors to go out and take a look.
As previously mentioned, most of the Central Gneiss Belt of the Algonquin Region is not mapped in any detail, making it extremely difficult to place the detailed geology of these occurrences in a regional context. Most of the reported occurrences that were visited are of two types:
(1) Disseminated sulphides (mainly pyrite, with minor phrrhotite and chalcopyrite in places) in a mafic gneiss. Rusty zones and minor quartz veining are sometimes apparent.
(2) Concordant and discordant pegmatite dikes and stringers, with or without concentrations of quartz, in mafic and felsic gneisses.
Most of the occurrences sampled had non-detectable gold values, but several had values of 10 parts per billion or greater. Excluding the McGown which is well known for its gold, there are at least two occurrences, GS-3 and GS-12, with reported values somewhat higher than the others.
- 5 -
GS-3 A value of 390 ppb shows that gold is present and additional sampling required. Mineralization consists of pyrite and chalcopyrite in a series of gneisses containing rusty carbonate layers.
GS-12 Although 80 ppb is not a high value, it is anomalous and the occurrence is interesting. Mineralization consists of pyrite, phrrhotite and chalcopyrite in a mafic gneiss cut by small pegmatite stringers.
Although the results presented in Appendix II have not been discussed here, one should note that there are several occurrences that have anomalous gold values which may warrant further investigation.
CONCLUSIONS
This study, a compilation of many of the gold occurrences reported in the literature, will enable prospectors to conduct additional evaluation of these occurrences.
Although it was not intended to arrive at any conclusions at this preliminary stage of the project, there would appear to be potential for gold in the Central Gneiss Belt of the Huntsville-Parry Sound area.
