302 youth were t reated for gunshot or stab wounds

last year

Our capacity : Caught in the Crossfire serves only 108.

There were 91 homic ides in 2013; 131 in 2012.

Our capacity : KWP is funded to ser ve only 85.

Thank you for helping us save lives!!

Our Goal for Next Year: Reach More Youth

Page 4: Youth ALIVE! Annual Report 2013-2014

Teens on Target Over 2,000 young people in Oakland are safer this year because of you!

Our Teens on Target (TNT) violence preven5on youth leadership program trains peer educators who teach workshops about

gun, gang, family and domes5c violence, provides case management and mental health linkage to support their growth, and

engages them in advocacy for policies to reduce violence.

ANer comple5ng the TNT program or par5cipa5ng in the 6 session

workshops, youth changed their minds about violence!

87% Have helped resolve a conflict that otherwise

would have ended in a fight.

68% Fewer students believed that it is somemes okay

to hit your girlfriend/boyfriend.

79% Fewer students believe they are safer with a

gun than without one

Page 5: Youth ALIVE! Annual Report 2013-2014

I like how TNT is like my 2nd

family now and I get to help

people too. It feels good.

I joined TNT because of some

things that happened to me in

my life when I was younger and

I wanted to grow and become a

better person.

I don’t want my younger siblings to face

the same challenges that I face now.

Our Value:

Innovative Leadership

“A genuine leader is

not a searcher for

consensus but a

molder of consensus.”

- Marn Luther King, Jr.

I can now show my sisters how to

solve probs and encourage them to get

an adult not a violent adult because

violence is not the solu5on.

I joined TNT to teach younger

kids that violence isn’t right.

I feel like the training is good for us because we learn a lot of different factors that we didn’t

know before and it’s like as we’re teaching others, we are learning ourselves.

There's nothing that we do that

doesn't have a purpose to it.

“Jamila”, a 15-year-old girl living in West Oakland

was arrested for loitering in a public place with

the intent to commit pros5tu5on. ANer being

referred to CIC, and working with case manager

Tammy Cloud, Jamila began to open up about

what she had been feeling. She lost her mother

at a very young age, and was having a tough 5me

processing the loss. She was a great student

un5l her mother passed which is when her

grades started to drop and she was no longer

able to par5cipate in sports. Within a 3 month

period, Jamila’s a*endance improved, her GPA

went from a 1.5 to a 2.6 she started playing

basketball again, agreed to therapy and the

judge took her off GPS ankle monitoring.

Although her case is closed, Tammy remains in

contact with Jamila who con5nues to make

progress.

Our Value:

Courage “Courage is the most

important virtue of

all the virtues,

because without

courage you can’t

pracce any other

virtue consistently.”

- Maya Angelou Since I’ve been working with my case manager, I’ve learned that I have

greater strength in areas in which I did not know I have. “

84 families began their healing because of you!

When Ruth Smith’s son, Johnathan, was murdered

at 10:47pm, Marilyn from our team was the first

to respond and provide support at their home.

Then the following morning our team joined Ms.

Smith at the Vic5m of Crime office to apply for

funeral assistance. She is the mother and grand-

mother of a large family and her biggest concern

was the mental state of her grandchildren who

were extremely close with their uncle, brother,

cousin, friend. The brunt of our work with this

family was insuring that they were connected to

support and mental health services. Smith says

she oNen finds herself “looking for a knock at the

door with a familiar voice” as she con5nues to

work with KWP and receive counseling from

Catholic Chari5es of the East Bay. Her family

con5nues with their peaceful healing process.
