As we move forward, your support is vital so thank you for standing with us. By partnering with us you enable YFC to reach more young people in Britain who desperately need to hear about the amazing love of Jesus.

Every Blessing,

Neil O’Boyle

NATIONALDIRECTOR’S REPORT

I’ve also had the privilege of meeting YFC workers in Local Centres and Projects who spend untold hours each week working with young people in order that the light of Christ would shine into their hearts and they would receive Him!

That is the heartbeat of Youth for Christ and the reason we have pioneered all sorts of new initiatives, training and resources to share the story of Jesus during the year. It’s why we created the Coming Home Tour, The All-In Thing and a brand new touring band mission team called The Sense. We also launched a brand new junior-site of RE:quest called RE:start for younger pupils. I’m so excited that RE:quest’s popularity continues to grow and the resource is now the most visited RE site in the UK.

This year we have established new Local Centres in Dundee, Witham and Wiltshire and the innovative Projects - Harlow Youth Vision and Pineapple Youth Project. Whether it’s through our brilliant online resources, talented and enthusiastic mission teams or our excellent Local Centres and Projects, we are declaring the Good News of Jesus to young people and seeing God move.

But we are not stopping there. We are committed to relevantly taking the Good News of Jesus to every young person in Britain which means we have to keep exploring new areas of gospel ministry. Wherever young people are and whatever situation they find themselves in, we need to be there ministering to them and pointing them to Jesus.

WHY WHAT

Since my appointment as the Leader of this great movement, I’ve been blown away by the ways we are already drawing alongside young people in this country.

“We saw students engage with YFC teams who have literally never engaged with anything we have done. From an ethos point of view this is really encouraging.”

“Mentioned @REquestUK to an RE teacher today. They had glowing feedback for it as a brilliant resource for teaching RE in schools”

“On Sunday we delivered the first All Age Gathering at our church and it was fantastic! We had such positive feedback - stacks of people have said that they will be bringing guests to the next one. So thank you so much!”

“I love all the varied ideas, activities and games that facilitate great faith based discussions with young people. Thank you!”

I love getting new books. Like many of us, I buy online and wait for that little cardboard package to drop through my letterbox. As I flick through the crisp white pages and enjoy the ‘new book’ smell, I dream of putting what I read into practice and wonder how it will shape or change what I do. I’m the same with a lot of new things. If I get a new shirt, I want to wear it at the first possible moment. When I replaced my car, I looked for opportunities to drive to places as driving became a novelty once again.

The thing that excites me about new things is their potential. The dream of what they could become. At Youth for Christ we are all about the new thing. It’s not because we don’t credit the things of our past or where we’ve come from but because our mission is to take the Good News “relevantly”. The methods we use have to fit the times in order that what we say can be fully understood. So we strive to innovate, to try something new or even to revisit something old in a new way because of the potential of what could happen as Jesus changes lives. We dream big dreams of young people responding to the gospel of Jesus, whether through new resources, initiatives or missions teams. We want to see young people equipped to share Jesus with their friends and families in a new way, that we may see this nation reached and transformed by God once more.

The God that we serve is the living God who speaks. God once said to the Israelites through the Prophet Isaiah “see I am doing a new thing”. God, who is the same yesterday, today and forever; who doesn’t change, fail or fade, yet does a new thing. How remarkable. He says to His people that

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

Page 5: Youth for Christ - Annual report Year ending august 2015

He will do greater things for them in their future than the things in their past, as He promises to bring them back from Babylon into the promised land. Even though it may feel like people have forgotten about God or that He has been relegated to a thing of the past, God announces action. Today, our God calls us to capture His heartbeat and join with Him as He continues to break out and cause people to turn back to Him. He asks us to partner with Him in what He is doing, whether through prayer, giving, our lifestyle or by using the gifts He has given us so that we may see the “way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

God is always working a new way of doing the thing He has always done – taking something that was nothing and making it something. At Youth for Christ we have the incredible privilege of seeing God work through new things in this country as we seek to make Jesus known to young people. Whether it’s through our appointment of a new National Director, delivering a new message from the old parable of the Prodigal Son, a new Centre springing up in an old town or young people hearing the Good News through the songs and testimonies of our new touring band, we keep on breaking new ground for Christ.

The new model of ministry that we launched last year, the Chartered Project, continued to grow and we have had 10 communities across the nation exploring the possibilities with us. This has led to ongoing discussions as we journey with churches to develop new ways of engaging with young people and our prayer is that these will continue to grow and bring fruit in the months and years ahead.

Our chartered Local Centres have continued to thrive and this year we launched 3 new Centres in Wiltshire, Witham and Dundee. While some are experiencing increasingly more difficult funding issues, God has been faithful in providing what has been needed to keep their ministries moving forward and we continue to see new and exciting opportunities open up to them.

We are thrilled with the wide variety of ministries which are part of the YFC family, each seeking to share Good News with young people in ways that are relevant to their context. We are extremely thankful for these partnerships with over 70 local communities and the many more local churches that support and sustain the ministry, as well as the volunteers who faithfully serve God by sharing Good News with local young people every week.

The official launch event for Dundee Youth for Christ took place at The Steeple Church in the heart of the city centre and included a number of people from other YFC Centres in Scotland. The new Centre is made up of a Board which contains representatives from various local denominations together with two church workers and a full-time staff worker.

It all started when a group of churches and youth workers in Dundee, who had benefited for many years from the assistance of YFC national staff in organising mission activities for young people, wanted to do more. The activities were excellent but limited to annual events so a working group was developed to examine the issues facing local churches. When the group realised the challenge of delivering sustainable Christian outreach to young people, they established Dundee YFC.

The Centre aims to support local churches in developing long-term outreach to young people and to also develop new opportunities for ministry to children and young people in the city. The Dundee YFC team also encourage young people to become active and engaged members of their communities, helping them to develop a sense of social responsibility. They serve young people through discipleship and mentoring and are keen for Christian young people to be active participants in the mission of the local church. The local community is supported by the team

providing chaplaincy support in schools, colleges and universities in partnership with local churches. This is mainly through the delivery of Assemblies and/or Religious Observance events at the invitation of head teachers.

There are also many other things that the Centre has in the pipeline. The group are planning and organising various activities throughout the year, such as a Summer Mission Programme and an annual Schools Mission Week which sees YFC’s mission teams tour Dundee High Schools. Neil Campbell, the Chair of the Trustees, hopes

that this is just the beginning: “We are so pleased to have appointed Laura McCartney as our Youth Work Coordinator. She is leading our Youth Work Outreach Development Programme and looking at how to reach young people in areas of the city who have no access to hearing about Jesus” he remarks. Laura, originally from Motherwell, in Lanarkshire, is equally enthusiastic. She says, “It’s exciting to build lasting and strong relationships across the city amongst existing organisations and youth and to help the team lay the foundations for the organisation to develop over the coming years.”

MINISTRIES PROJECTS

Page 8: Youth for Christ - Annual report Year ending august 2015

Situated between Leicester and Burton–upon-Trent, Coalville, as its name suggests, is a former coal-mining town. As a product of the Industrial Revolution, mining, quarrying, engineering, textile manufacture and the railway all sprang up during the 19th Century and brought prosperity which continued well into the 20th century. By the 1970s local history guides portrayed Coalville as a popular and thriving town where people travelled to shop, pursue leisure activities and employment. The local church played a key role in the community and the town was a desirable place to live, with many resources and activities for young people. Today Coalville is very different. The thriving manufacturing industries have gone, many shops are empty, the cinemas are no longer open and provision for young people in the community is drastically reduced.

Heartland YFC was launched in 2003, covering Coalville and the surrounding villages and building on the work of another YFC Centre in the area. Centre Director, Lauren Fox says, “At YFC’s annual Conference in January, one speaker, Cathy Madavan, ran a session called ‘Digging for

Diamonds’. She said that we often find the greatest treasure in the darkest places and described how diamonds start out as carbon but are transformed through a process. I asked myself why Coalville couldn’t be transformed in a similar way? What if we saw not Coalville but ‘Diamondville’?”

The vision began to come together following a retreat day and research with former miners and before long the ‘Diamondville’ project was born. With its roots in Isaiah 53:2-3, it aims to encourage residents to alter perceptions both in how they see themselves, their town and Jesus. The Heartland YFC team will visit tutor groups in schools to deliver interactive lessons and assemblies and other activities will accompany the project, such as street dance workshops with follow up sessions on improving self-esteem.

The aim of The Diamondville Project is for young people to be the catalyst for positive change throughout their community.

Lauren explains that as YFC workers their faith in Jesus lies at the heart of the project. “Jesus wasn’t described as ‘a handsome king’. Nothing about the way He looked made Him attractive to us. He was hated, rejected and thought to be a nobody. We felt that the parallels between how Jesus’ town of Nazareth was seen and how Coalville is often viewed are striking.” Heartland YFC want young people and the wider community to realise that the way life is lived should come out of a deeper sense of purpose and worth, one which they hope to be able to explore with them further in the coming months.

Our incredible YFC One gap year programme saw 38 young leaders trained, equipped and released as young evangelists this year. These volunteers inspired and stretched us as a movement as they shared their faith with young people across Britain. Many of them were based in YFC Centres but 11 were based on our touring teams; three on Nomad (using sports), three on Stance (using street dance) and five on our brand new touring band, The Sense. The volunteers received regular training throughout the year and had the opportunity to achieve a certificate in youth work in partnership with Moorlands Bible College. Many have gone on to employment in youth work, further study or our second year Academy programme.

MISSIONS

YFC ONE

After 11 months of training, untold hours of travelling and many opportunities in youth ministry, our YFC One volunteers celebrated the completion of their gap year in August at their End of Year Bash. For two nights, 38 volunteers plus staff converged on the nation’s capital to spend time praising God, thanking Him for all He has done and rounding off their YFC One experience.

After doing some sight-seeing in London and visiting Lambeth Palace as guests of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the volunteers spent their final night together on a cruise of the River Thames. This was a great time for the volunteers to celebrate, see London at night and share stories of what God had done in and through them. Volunteers received their End of Year certificates at this point and paid testimony to God’s goodness. The staff and support in their Local YFC Centre placements play a huge part in the impact YFC One volunteers have on young people as Emily Cobbold, YFC One Support Worker, attests: “We are so thankful for the work they do throughout the year in investing in these young leaders.”

As this group of young Christians, who dedicated a year to serving God, stepping out and pursuing His calling on their lives, ended their year together there was much laughter, thankfulness and more than a few emotional farewells. For Emily, it was a real privilege to witness the way the volunteers progressed during the year. “Many of them arrive in September with a lack of confidence, not knowing the true extent of the skills and passions that God has given them. To hear so many stories of personal development and growth in their relationship with God at the end of the year is brilliant and watching as they go on to great things makes the whole job worthwhile.”

This has been an excellent year for the Touring Missions Teams. The team has grown with the addition of a touring band The Sense. Joy and Andy Clark were employed to transition an existing band ‘Taste’ into a new team. We were delighted to appoint Jessica Critchley as our

new team leader of Stance. We have begun exciting partnerships with Happi and Chip K as cutting-edge touring artists. The touring teams portfolio is as strong as ever and the number of young people we are reaching with the Good News continues to increase, with us seeing well over 60,000 young people this year. We were thrilled to appoint Grace Tween, at the end of the year, as our new YFC National Evangelist. She previously served on the street dance team for 3 years.

“I’ve loved being on Nomad for the last 2 years and it’s been great to see how spending a week in one place can really make a difference! One of my favourite things is seeing how people are impacted by the cage and constantly being reminded that Jesus can make a difference in their situations; teachers and students!”

“We thoroughly enjoyed the team being here and I truly believe you added a new dynamic to the work we do here in Rugby. Your team, although young, are a credit to you and the work you guys have done on their character is evident. We would have you back anytime.”

COMING HOME TOUR

A YFC team ran a Coming Home Tour of Sunday services throughout 2015. Nathan Iles, Grace Tween and Paul Kingsley-Smith as members of the Missions Team visited 32 different churches right across England from Gillingham up to Lancaster. The team saw in the region of 5,000 people throughout this time and excitingly well over 800 people made either a first time commitment or re-commitment to Christ as part of these events. The service included spoken word poetry, worship, a themed talk and the fantastic Prodigal video produced by Bath YFC. It was an absolute joy to share the gospel in this way with so many people during the year.

We had a great year delivering many evangelistic Rock Solid weekends and engaging with over 400 young people. We developed a brand new programme around the theme of living life in all its fullness. Through weekends full of outdoor activities, fun and interactive sessions, we saw youth group relationships grow and young people encounter Jesus in powerful ways. Alongside this the Residentials team led the 11-14s venues for a week at both Spring Harvest and New Wine. The team had brilliant opportunities to speak into young people’s lives, see young people respond to the gospel and grow disciples.

RESIDENTIALS

“One of the highlights from my gap year with YFC One was seeing the diversity of each setting we worked in, whether it was a school or an estate, and being able to bring life to it by experiencing and sharing God’s love with young people.”

Eddy Plant, YFC One Volunteer

Page 14: Youth for Christ - Annual report Year ending august 2015

Having launched a bold new vision and innovative new website at the start of 2014, this year saw a huge increase in the amount of churches we have served and the impact we have had. We had well over 1,000 churches sign up to the website and doubled our number of regular users. 15,000 people visited www.yfcresources.co.uk and feedback of what God is doing through them continues to encourage us. One leader said, “We’ve gone from a group of 0 to 15! The youth love it.” Another told us a great peer evangelism story of a lad who had invited his friend to a Lumen group, he had become a Christian and was getting baptised. Another said, “We use a variety of resources but for outreach YFC resources are the best out there.” Partnership remained central to the resources. Key partnerships with organisations like Alpha, Care for the

Family and Freedom in Christ, as well as an increase in YFC Local Centres and Projects using the resources, strengthened relationships with local churches. International interest has also blossomed with Canada and several European nations exploring using the model and material of British YFC across the world. We believe in the local Church, continue to serve her and stand with her as together we are more effective in reaching young people with the Good News.

BIGMINISTRIES

CHURCH RESOURCES

We’ve had a busy year. The highpoint was launching The All-In Thing, a 3 part resource for helping churches think differently and be inclusive in their worship. The resource has a book, a CD and a website packed full of creative resources and a vision to make church truly all-engaging. This was well received and sold 500 copies in its first 2 months of sales. Sales of other resources were also steady, with people still buying and using many of our interactive online bible stories and songs in their ministry to children.

We ran many events, including the first YFC 8-11s residential weekend; services in Birmingham Cathedral for all the year 6 children from Church of England schools in Birmingham; main sessions at ‘Hand-in-Hand’ the national children’s ministry conference in Eastbourne and a ‘ONE BiG Day’ in Plymouth with over 200 children. We also worked alongside great organisations like Home for Good and Spring Harvest (where we led the 8-11s and All-age venues).

In June, BIG Ministries said goodbye to James Rubacki, who had been working with us for 5 years. Despite this, our volunteer team is still going strong, with a great level of commitment from long serving and new team members.

THE ALL-IN THING

“...In May we were at La Pas Opton and saw you guys running the ‘All In’ services. In August we were asked to join the All Age team at our church and in September we bought your book and CDs, suggesting to the rest of the team that we use your stuff as a guide/ inspiration/resources/structure.

In October we worked frantically, got a drama team together, ordered doughnuts for pre-service refreshments, hung up reams of bunting to decorate the church, roped in half the church to man the all-in sync stations, bought tons of art/craft equipment, worked with the children’s church to learn one of your songs ready to present, changed the structure of the service, incorporated new worship songs, publicised like mad including sending out an email to the whole church explaining why everyone is important and got everyone excited.

On Sunday we delivered the first All Age Gathering (what we are calling them) and whoop! It was fantastic. We had such positive feedback - stacks of people have said that they will be bringing guests to the next one! Thank you so so much!”

This was a year of real growth for the RE:quest site. In October we were joined by the Rev. Dr. John Sentamu as we officially launched the new site at an event in London. Over the year we created many new resources, including films on ethical issues and core Christian beliefs. In December our Advent Adventures - 15 short blogs telling the nativity story – were used by primary schools to explore the significance of Jesus’ birth.

“Great to be in a KS2 class yesterday and see the pupils interacting with the Advent Adventures @REquestUK. Great discussion work”

For Easter, we produced a series of five films based around John’s account of Jesus’ death and resurrection, one of which (‘The Crucifixion’) was shortlisted for a Jerusalem Award. The week leading up to Easter holidays was our busiest week of the year, with around 8,000 unique visitors using the site. We began developing resources for early years and pupils with special needs, such as image-supported text documents, housed on our growing junior-site, RE:start. The RE:quest team went on the road, piloting a live RE experience on love and friendship at St Anne’s C of E school, Brown Edge. The team also delivered training at a variety of training colleges.

Over the year we continued to train, equip, support and deploy our team of Reflex Outreach Workers to the front line of prison delivery as well as to develop creative and innovative programmes and tools for use in prison education, chaplaincies and the community. Each of these are specialist youth workers with a heart for those young people considered by many in society as worthless and beyond hope. With the political landscape ever changing; a new Justice Secretary, high profile stories in the media and the first comprehensive review of youth justice in over a decade due to report in the summer of 2016, we continued to remain focussed on our aim of breaking the cycle of offending through truly holistic transformation found in an encounter with God. Following a successful

Luke* comes from a large Travelling family. He had limited schooling and struggles to read and write. From a young age, Luke covered up for his educational needs by communicating through aggression and drinking alcohol with peers to earn acceptance and respect. At the age of 15 he was convicted of alcohol induced Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and was sent to a Young Offender Institution where he met a Reflex Outreach Worker during the Induction process. A few weeks into his sentence, Luke experienced the Holy Spirit powerfully and became a Christian during a Chapel service. The Prison Chaplain baptised him in the prison Chapel a few days later with some of his fellow prisoners there to watch. Since giving his life to Jesus, a Reflex Outreach Worker has been meeting with him weekly for one to one mentoring sessions in the Chapel where he has been learning how the Bible works and hearing the gospel accounts of Jesus read aloud. Luke is so obviously transformed and ‘powered up’ to find out more and more about Jesus. He has expressed he feels a calling to attend Bible College one day to learn more about his faith and to train to be an evangelist to his own Travelling community.

REFLEXUrban Skillz music week, we appointed a new Outreach Worker in HMP Oakwood (currently the largest prison in the UK). We also started delivering chaplaincy support and the MyLife programme in HMYOI Feltham with 18-21 year old young offenders. Building on the success of MyLife over the last few years, we have now trained over 50 MyLife tutors in the community resulting in preventative and diversionary interventions away from potential future criminality. We have also engaged new supporters through our #thereforthejourney campaign on social media and our website as well as work with other Christian partners through alliances and events in promoting interest in, and prayer for, true Kingdom-minded prison ministry in the UK.

A CHANGED LIFE

17

Page 18: Youth for Christ - Annual report Year ending august 2015

What an exciting and challenging year this has been! We are so thankful to the LORD for all that has been achieved and the many young lives that have been impacted. On behalf of the Board of YFC, a very BIG thank you for standing with us in our mission to take the Good News of Jesus relevantly to every young person in Britain. The ministries of YFC in Britain depend on many people in many places, faithfully reaching out to young people. So whether you are a volunteer or staff member, serving locally or nationally, we are very grateful for your faithful commitment.

It has been a year of significant change. We were delighted with Neil O’Boyle’s appointment as National Director. Neil came with an impressive track record of youth evangelism across the world. But more importantly, we believe he is God’s choice to lead YFC ministries in Britain. Neil is challenging us to “keep the main thing the main thing” by prioritising evangelism through demonstration, declaration, decision and discipleship.

We sense we are at the start of a new chapter in YFC’s journey. New ground is being broken! A new generation of leaders is coming through and helping to mobilise evangelistic effort. A new strategy is forming and more young people are being reached. Some of the exciting indications are:

• Through the amazing work of our 70 Local Centres and Projects and our national teams, we are now recording almost a third of a million interactions with young people each month with big increases in the numbers younger than 15 years old.

• We have a record number of groups using YFC Resources.

• The pioneering website RE:quest is the most visited RE site in the UK with over a quarter of a million unique visitors.

• BIG Ministries heads up YFC’s growing children’s work, providing both fun and engaging children in God’s plan to change the world!

• New Local Centres and Projects have been established – at Dundee, Witham and Wiltshire and innovative projects such as Harlow Youth Vision and ‘Pineapple’. And there are more in the pipeline!

• We have had another very successful round of missions, events, and tours through the year, through which thousands of young people have had the opportunity to encounter the LORD Jesus.

• Street dance team Stance, sports team Nomad, touring band The Sense and artists Happi and Chip K continue to give great support to missions and outreach events.

• Reflex continues to pioneer amazing work with marginalised young people through direct work in prisons and communities and through our partners.

HOW / HOW WE DO WHAT WE DO

Page 19: Youth for Christ - Annual report Year ending august 2015

In 2016 we celebrate 70 years of YFC’s ministries in Britain. When Billy Graham established British Youth for Christ in 1946 his belief was the best way to reach young people with the gospel was through the witness and testimony of young people. This is still our view today. Most of the several million young people in Britain have little or no contact with church and have not yet had an opportunity to make an informed decision about Jesus. This is a huge opportunity – especially given three out of four believers make their decision to follow Jesus before they reach 20 years old. Let’s all rise to the challenge!

Our vision is one of reaching a whole generation for Jesus. Thank you for continuing to stand with us in this vital mission!

19

TREASURER’S REPORTWe have faced a number of challenges this last year which have had an impact on our finances, it has not however had a negative impact on the ministry. We are so grateful that even in these difficult economic times people have been so generous in their giving to our ministry. We are very aware that often people are giving sacrificially and out of a passion to help young people and we have remained committed to using the money God has entrusted to us to enable ministry. Income for the year was £1,896,644 and expenditure was £1,934,635 leaving us with a deficit of £37,991.

We receive valuable regular income from our partners who give each month; the giving of each one of these is very much appreciated. It is very helpful to have this regular source of income which gives a good foundation for the ongoing work. Our staff continue to raise a proportion of their own salary costs through personal supporters; they ask family and friends

to support them in their work and we are thankful to the staff for undertaking this sometimes challenging fundraising, and for each person who gives towards their ministry.

We also received funds in the form of grants and large gifts from individuals. This income helps us to develop new projects and expand our work so we can reach an increasing number of young people.

I am grateful for the work of all our many staff and volunteers but I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Finance Team who work hard to ensure that all our financial operations run smoothly and help us to be good stewards of our income.

We continue to thank God for his ongoing provision.
