B GRADE GRAND FINAL

Kadina and Paskeville metfor the third successive yearin the Yorke Peninsula Foot-ball League B grade grandfinal at sunny Moonta oval,on Saturday.Kicking to the park end,

Pasky got the start it wantedwith the first two goals fromLeighton Wilksch and TroyMulders, but the Blood-hounds, playing in their 12thB grade grand final since2000, soon settled and beganto get a sniff of the leather. In a five-minute red-and-

black patch, Kadina scoredgoals through Brett Burnell,Mitchell Miller and LachlanBoothey to take the lead. The Magpies swooped on

a couple of late goals, as didKadina, and at the first breakthere was just a point in it:Paskeville 5.2, Kadina 5.1.

There was more end-to-end stuff in the second term.Stuart Roennfeldt goaled forKadina, but Pasky’s DavidHall responded.Sam Clayson’s clever

rover’s goal and another byZack Zweck gave Pasky abrief respite. The dangerous Derek

Sansbury was instrumentalin a couple of quick repliesfor Kadina as the tempera-ture rose on and off theground. When the halftime siren

blew, Kadina held a six-pointlead in a goal-for-goal game.Kadina 9.2, Paskeville 8.2.James Lawry gave the

Bloods the first goal after thebreak, but Richard Jamesmatched that and his team-mate’s long bomb put Paskyback in front, but not forlong as Burnell nailed a rip-per from the pocket. It seemed Kadina might

be finally getting on topwhen, after a couple ofbounces denied it goals, itfinally got a favourablebounce. When this was fol-lowed by another goal fromMiller, the Kadina support-ers began to sing.A six-pointer from the

boot of Ryan Clasohm wasanswered by Kadina to givethe Bloodhounds a valuablethree-goal buffer at lemons:Kadina 14.4, Paskeville 11.3.Pasky’s hopes of a couple

of quick goals were dashedimmediately as Kadinastreamed forward in a premiership surge of unan-swered goals. In a scintillating

10-minute burst, the Blood-hounds took complete control, surging forwardtime after time to score sixunanswered goals and endthe contest. To Paskeville’s credit, it got

a couple of late goals, butKadina had booted 7.2 in thelast quarter to win its 15th Bgrade premiership.Sansbury was a worthy

best on ground in a great

team effort.The Bloods’ score is

eclipsed only by Ardrossan’s19.19 (133) in its 1979 YorkeValley Football League Bgrade grand final win.

After finishing the minorround at top of the ladder, the strong Wallaroo seniorcolts side showed CMSCrows just how strong itwas, Wallaroo defeatingCrows 10.12 to 5.5 in thegrand final on Saturday atMoonta.Wallaroo opened the

game kicking to the westernend of the ground and had agood lead at the first change,3.4 to 0.3.Wallaroo had goal scorers

from everywhere with ChaseMartin, Scott Weger, DylanTappin, Sam Holman, TomGrillett, Bailey Hann, HarleyMcInerney and SamuelWells all scoring six-pointersthroughout the game.Crows battled hard all day

against a bigger, strongerside to go down, but not bedisgraced, as lads who came

up from junior colts this yearwill be the club’s future.Highlight of the Crows’

game was the inclusion ofsmallest lad on the ground,Lachy Pointon; whenbrought on, he showed hecan mix it with the biggestand the best as he kicked theteam’s second goal.Jake Cook played well

with plenty of touches andNed Rankine did well inruck and around the ground.Wallaroo controlled near-

ly all positions with Martinand Lesley Kirley the stand-out players, along with JackLeighton and Tate Skinner. My best for the game was

Chase Martin for his contin-ued effort all day.

A gradeKadina v Paskeville

With a huge buzz around theA grade match, Kadina startedwith the centre pass and quicklyconverted a goal, whichPaskeville answered. Firstturnover was in Kadina’s goalcircle and Pasky quickly scoredbut a turnover by Kadina GDEmma Byrne evened the scores. Both teams had a nervous start, which meant numerous inter-cepts but with no reward as theball was quickly turned again. Itwas a long time between goalsuntil Pasky GA SavannahZielonka converted. Pasky wasup by two at quarter time.Kadina came out strongly,

scoring six unanswered goalsuntil Pasky settled and, withpatient passing, started to con-vert. Kadina GA Tash Westbrookbadly injured her knee and KateSchild came onto the court, shooting beautifully for the restof the match. With tight defenceat both ends and some greatintercepts by Pasky GD FionaBussenschutt, Pasky started toclose the gap. Kadina was up bytwo at halftime. There was plenty of turnovers

before Kadina goaled, its shoot-ers under intense pressure fromPasky GK Sallyanne Heinrichand Bussenschutt. With steadypassing, Pasky slowly closed thegap, Kadina preferring a fast-paced game. Pasky started tobreak away and C Jade Danielsteadied the team down thecourt; Pasky had a six-goal leadat the last break.Emily Boothey took the court

for Kadina, Pasky continuedunchanged for the fourth quar-ter. Both teams defended tightlyand shot beautifully.Pasky looked in control but

Kadina had a last minute surgeto even the scores at full time. Now in overtime, both teams

came out firing. Intercepts in thecentre third meant manyturnovers. Again, Pasky waspatient to get the ball to itsgoalies who worked hard againstKadina’s defenders. At the change of ends, Kadina

was up by one and had the nextcentre pass. Pasky did not giveup, taking the next two goals toeven the scores.Pasky picked up a loose ball

and WD Khaleisha Barnett tooka great intercept but neitherresulted in a score.A strong rebound by Kadina

GD and best on court HalleyGullery was a costly turnoverand Kadina was the triumphantwinner by one goal after anintense game.

B gradePaskeville v CMS CrowsCrows had the first centre pass

and scored, but Pasky made aquick turnover to score twoquick goals. GA Carrie Ramsayand GS Sarah Knight worked thecircle well, making it hard forCrows GD Rebecca McSkim-ming and GK Brittany Alden-hoven. The game was hard andquick, with both teams makingmistakes but Pasky settled to besix in front at quarter time: Pasky11, Crows 5.Crows scored four quick goals

with Crows WA Kari Jones andC Elizabeth South feedinggoalies beautifully. Pasky settledwith players defending all theway down the court. Crows’defenders were working hard butnot being rewarded with goals.Pasky C Corinne Bussenschuttwas playing a great game notallowing her player to breakaway. Halftime: Pasky 23, Crows14.Both teams made some

changes, bringing on fresh legs.

Pasky’s Nikki Crickmay, now incentre, was feeding the goalieswell. Both sides were puttingpressure on all the way down thecourt, forcing errors. Crows wonthe quarter but Pasky was stillahead at three-quarter time 30-22.Both teams again made

changes. Pasky GK Leanne Prid-ham was putting a lot of pressureon Crows GS Emily Haydon andtaking great rebounds. Her teamrewarded her efforts with goals. All Crows players were workinghard but a few missed goals did-n’t help their cause. Final scores:Pasky 41, Crows 29.

C gradeSouthern Eagles v MoontaA shaky start had the first four

centre passes scored by theopposing team. Moonta defend-ers Aisha Cooper and DanielleKeast worked together for sever-al intercepts, making it difficultfor Eagles’ attack line. Scoreswere six all at quarter time.Moonta GK Rachael Clarke

and Eagles GS Dana Tape had agood battle in the second quar-ter, both awarded penalties.Strong rebounding by Eagles’Anissa Thompson kept her teamin the game but Moonta’s heavypressure at the Eagles’ centrepasses gave it a 15-13 lead at half-time.Eagles brought on Megan

Hoile, Tasmyn Biddell and JosieRudduck for the second half, andall had impact early. However,Tammy Wardle kept Moonta set-tled and shot beautifully. Three-quarter time: Moonta 25, Eagles23.In one of the best quarters of

the day, both teams struggled togain momentum, the leadchanging several times. Moonta, having led all game, was overrunby Eagles in the last five minutes;final scores: Eagles 33, Moonta30.

D gradeSouthern Eagles v PaskevilleSouthern Eagles had the first

centre pass but Pasky scored thefirst goal. After an injury in thesecond semifinal, Eagles GS Lyn-lee Hancock wore a heavy kneebrace; she and Pasky GK RachelMeier had a tight tussle. Nerveswere evident and all goaliesmissed shots. Whilst Pasky hadthe better start, Eagles sooncaught up then overtook, to lead10-8 at quarter time.Eagles brought Leonie Ander-

son into GA and she had animmediate impact, finding herrange from all parts of the circle.Pasky defenders Meier and GDOlivia Northeast double teamedHancock but Anderson also diddamage. Eagles GK Teresa Hay-wood defended shots at goalbeautifully, even causing a heldball. After a low-scoring quarter,Eagles led 19-12 at halftime.Eagles brought Maddie Ger-

mein into WD and Kayla Boycewent into WA for Pasky. EaglesWA Jordan Hull made a fantasticintercept and her team capi-talised. Despite being the small-est in the circle, Northeast took agreat rebound; Anderson contin-ued to shoot beautifully andfrom far out. Eagles scored sixgoals before Meier took an inter-cept, her team converted for itsfirst score for the quarter. CBelinda Hull worked fluidly withJ Hull; their feeding into the goalcircle was exceptional. Late inthe quarter, Pasky WD CharlotteBarker went for a tumble, replaced by Sarah Browning.Three-quarter time: Eagles 30,Pasky 16.Pasky brought Emma Ward

and Danni Hicks onto court;their new energy seemed to work

and Pasky scored a couple ofquick goals. Ward took a coupleof great intercepts at GK. EaglesGD Jess Reppin impressivelytook an intercept in the circlewhen it was just her on bothPasky goalies. Whilst this was abetter quarter by Pasky, the con-sistent, level-headed and experi-enced approach by the Eagleswas too hard to defeat. Finalscores: Eagles 39, Pasky 25.

E gradeSouthern Eagles v ArdrossanEagles had the first centre pass

but Ardrossan C Rebecca Careyintercepted. Ardrossan had theshot but missed, and Eagles con-verted. Another missed opportu-nity by Ardrossan helped Eaglestake an early lead. When Lesley Strattonintercepted it looked like it wouldbe a tightly contested game.Eagles goalies Alice Hickmanand Tasmyn Biddell used theirheight to good advantage andpositioned themselves well underthe ring. Eagles had a 13-8 lead atquarter time.Ever-reliable Eagles C Josie

Rudduck backed up well aroundthe circle and WA Jessie Eastfound more space in the secondquarter. Ardrossan defendersHannah Goldsworthy and Geor-gia Kuhndt lifted their intensity, getting plenty of deflections andrebounds. Eagles stayed com-posed and took a six-goal leadinto halftime, 26-20.Eagles accelerated in the third

quarter, putting pressure on allover the court. WD BrittanyHancock and GD Sarah Ramseymade their opponents work hardand GK Alexandra Thompsonand Ardrossan GS Roads had agood battle, with Roads forced tomake long leads out of the circle.Eagles swooped on loose ballsand GA Hickman shot somebeautiful goals from long rangeto help her team to a 39-28 leadat the last change.Ardrossan players gave it their

all in the last quarter. GA Cole-man lifted and intercepted sever-al passes, using her height andskill to try and draw her teamback into the game. GDGoldsworthy also fought hardand had to have an injury time tocompose herself after anothertough battle for a disputed ball.Eagles remained unflustered;Alice Hickman put in anothergood quarter and was a deservedbest on court winner.Eagles looked strong in every

position and capped their greatseason with a 51-39 win.

hard with GD Sophie Adamsapplying good pressure in thecircle. Kadina’s goalies started tomove well but then Eagles GKEmma Goldsmith and GDAlysse Reuther tightened up andgot some good turnovers. Eagles’goalies started to make theirshots but Kadina kept fighting.Halftime: Eagles 25, Kadina 15. Great defensive pressure in

both goal circles made it chal-lenging for all goalies to shootaccurately. Kadina GK GeorgiaRowntree had Eagles GS ElizaJohnson rattled but GA ErinHoare stepped up and managedto sink a few good shots. Three-quarter time: Eagles 36,Kadina 21. The Eagles could almost feel

the medals around their necks inthe last quarter and all girls liftedas a team to finish the job.Reuther was inspirational in GD,getting turnovers and reboundswhen the Eagles needed themmost. To Kadina’s credit, theplayers never gave up and madethe Eagles work hard for theirvictory. The girls from the southwere far too strong in the endand came home with a sold win,46-29.
