Young Scholars Circle, TJ STEMbassadors, and other government agencies are

excited to host this year's Junior Solar Sprint as a satellite event of the

na onwide USA Science & Engineering Fes val. Junior Solar Sprint is a solar

car building and race compe on and is open to elementary and middle

school students to foster interests in Science and Engineering.

Date: May 25, 2013, Saturday @ 11:00-4:00pm, Langley High School

    basketball court, McLean, VA

Novice Division: grades 4-6 1st to 3rd prize Speed

    Category: Trophies

Junior Division: grades 7-8 1st to 3rd prize Design Category: Medals

We oer a Solar Car Building Workshop for those who want to be coached on how to build a solar car and learn the science

behind it. In our experience of conduc ng TJ seminalist workshops, the process of the ac vity and its impact on the par cipant

weigh heavily more than the award. The par cipants thoughts and learning during the process are the kind of details the TJ

admission is looking for, not a laundry list or resume padding. This hands-on workshop s mulates cri cal thinking and mo vates

students to create their own design. See the details below:

Solar Car Building Workshop Fee = $350, 3 Sundays, 4:00-5:30pm

    Class AMar 3, 10 & 17

    Class BApril 14, 21 & 28

*All parcipants need to bring their own materials. Please order the

ocial JSS solar panel from Solar Made or Pitsco ahead of me.

This workshop targets the following skills:

    spelling/word work/vocabulary

    uency

    decoding

    wri ng

    comprehension

To boost the reading and wri ng skills of the students, these skills need to be solidied.

    Expecta2ons

There will be homework, books to read at home, word work, spelling, vocabulary and wri ng

ac vi es assigned per week to maintain the reading and wri ng stamina of your child. There will

be book logs that go home with each student.

We will ini ally assess your child to determine the baseline skills: reading level, spelling stage and wri ng

stage. Since the comprehension is huge, we will also be able to tell you what aspects of comprehension your

student is having trouble with. We will discuss the results and create a rou ne that suits your child's needs.
