DIG South Vijay Kumar chairs Police Public Meet in Pulwama Ahmedabad, Jan 05: Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has said that In- dia is just nine days away from reaching a milestone that will officially certify the country as polio-free. Azad said, when he took over as Health Minister in 2009, India had 50 per cent of the polio cas- es and today the country has not wit- nessed any polio case for the past three years. He was addressing the vale- dictory session of a global healthcare summit at Ahmedabad organized by American Association of Physicians of Indian Ori- gin. Azad criticised the Gujrat governments for trying to take credit of launching the health schemes totally funded by the Centre. “My ministry gives financial assistance for many cen- tral government health schemes. But the states present these schemes as their own by changing their names,” Azad said. “States try to take credit for the health schemes, which are totally fund- ed by the Cen- tre,” he said. Talking to re- porters here, Azad claimed that his ministry had taken unique initiatives to trans- form the health sector dur- ing the UPA I and UPA II regimes. “More than Rs. 4,164.34 crore have been re- leased to Gujarat since the inception of the National Rural Health See India on Pg. 7 Srinagar, Jan 5: Moham- mad Kamal Malik, Vice Chairman Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Confer- ence castigated Mehbooba Mufti for her recent re- marks about Narendar Modi. According to a statement issued to KNS, Malik said, “Mehbooba Mufti left no stone unturned to assail Kashmiri People. The dual nature of PDP, their theatri- cal expressions and nefari- ous designs against people of Kashmir are apparent and by no means differ from Abdullah’s. The theory of PDP to boast itself as well wishers of Kashmiri people stand exposed and their recent comments acknowl- edge the fact of betraying the people. Like NC, PDP has done no good to people of Jammu and Kashmir pertaining to development, dignity and self-reliance.” This was stated by him while addressing a con- vention of party workers organized by the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Con- ference, Constituency Bat- maloo at Qamarwari, Sri- nagar. He further added, “Both NC and PDP are known for lust of power and both can go to any extent for seeking power. It is unfortunate that they have taken the people of Kashmir for granted and always compete in appeas- ing New Delhi rather than addressing the basic issues of people. But people do un- derstand their hypocrisy. Lack of transparency and accountability are visible and there is a sense of dis- trust among the people. The government and the opposi- tion have been abortive in their work for the welfare of the people.” Mohd Kamal Malik also lauds the role and activi- ties of Mohd Muzaffar Gazi (Matta) for the public See PC on Pg. 7 PDP concerned over Jammu-Srinagar highway mess, snow aftermath Srinagar, Jan 5: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sunday ex- pressed concern over the prevailing sad state of affairs on the Srinagar- Jammu highway and the continued difficulty faced by the passengers. The party also castigated the government for not taking up serious efforts to mitigate the problems of the people in view of the recent snowfall in the Valley, particularly in the south Kashmir. In a statement issued to KNS, the party’s General Secretary, Mohammad Dilawar Mir has said the condition on the high- way has worsened due to the recent snowfall and authorities seem sleep- ing over the mess there which has resulted into the huge inconvenience for the travellers. He said the highway mis- management has given rise to chaos and the long traffic jams have become usual now and the gov- ernment is seen nowhere to check and streamline the things. Mir said due to the lack of basic amenities like shel- ters, rest houses, the pas- sengers have been left at the mercy of private peo- ple who resort to oppor- tunism and fleece them. With the result stranded passengers would pre- fer to stay in their own vehicles, otherwise they have to pay huge money to avail accommodation, Mir said adding this is the normal practice go- ing on the road and there is no proper mechanism in place to check the mess. Similarly, during such circumstances the food provided to passengers is mostly substandard which is sold on inflated prices and there is no check to control prices and quality of food. The slippery conditions at some stretches on the road will force the traffic to ply with snail’s pace which is adding to the woes of passengers, Mir said adding though there is one way traffic on the highway but at times it is not followed properly which is also responsible for traffic jams. He said the snow is yet to be cleared of the in- ternal roads in Kashmir particularly in the South Kashmir. In view of these serious prevailing cold conditions power is yet to be restored in most of the areas and there is huge sacristy of ration, drinking water, LPG and other essential commodi- ties from the market, Mir added. Srinagar, Jan 5 : Mir- waiz Umar Farooq, Chairman Hurriyat Con- ference (M) on Sunday termed BJP more effec- tive vis-à-vis resolution of Kashmir issue than the Congress led UPA in the centre. According to KNS cor- respondent, talking to media persons on the sidelines of a seminar organized by Hurriyat (M) at its headquarter in Rajbagh, the Mirwaiz remarked that the BJP had shown some incli- nation and there was some movement forward aimed at addressing the long pending Kashmir issue. “It was during the ten- ure of Atal Behrai Va- jpayee as the prime minister of India that he had declared Kashmir a humane issued which should be addressed within the ambit of hu- manity,” the Mirwaiz told reporters. Commenting on Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh’s recent remarks that India and Pakistan at one point were close to resolve Kashmir is- sue, Mirwaiz said that the strong political will is needed so that this long pending problem is re- solved. “The Kashmir’s leadership will support any dialogue process aimed at the Kashmir resolution in accordance to the aspirations of the people of Kashmir.” Terming state govern- ment’s five years func- tioning a ‘hoax’ Mirwaiz asked why the govern- ment has remained si- lent about ‘human right violations, oppression suppression, killings and draconian laws’ in highlights of its achieve- ments. “The recent few inches of snowfall has deflated the claims made by the state government about its administrative effectiveness which was highlighted through paid advertisements in the lo- cal press,” he added. He ridiculed the present dispensation for prov- ing ‘a disaster in gover- nance besides gagging the voices of dissent and turning the state into a police state’. Mirwaiz al- leged the significance of the legislative assembly in the state has been ren- dered ‘symbolic’ as all the decisions according to him are being taken by the army commanders. Jammu, Jan 05: Present- ing the report card of the Coalition Government in the Rural Development sec- tor after completing 5 years in office, Minister for Ru- ral Development and Pan- chayati Raj, Ali Moham- mad Sagar today said that rural areas have witnessed visible change in terms of people’s participation in decision making, plan im- plementation together with massive infrastructural development and establish- ment of a functional and a vibrant Panchayati Raj set up. “We are presenting to the people of the state, our prog- ress and what we have been able to achieve during the last 5 years of the Omar led coalition Government in the form of a booklet detail- ing clearly the fairly high financial and physical prog- ress that has been achieved in the rural development sector across the state”. The Minister was address- ing a gathering after releas- ing a book detailing five year achievements of Rural Development Department here today. Describing the holding of Panchayat elections in the State despite challenges as a landmark achieve- ment of the coalition Gov- ernment, Sagar said the massive participation that was witnessed during the Panchayat elections in the state was reflective of the people’s yearning to see change in the rural face of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that this yearning has led to the establishment of Panchayati raj in the state and its subsequent empow- erment with the transfer of functions of 14 line depart- ments. “While we have made ev- ery effort to fulfil the prom- ises we made to our people and touch lives in rural and remote areas, we also realise that there is scope to do more and reach out to more village communi- ties”, Sagar said adding that criticism is welcome but it should be construc- tive for the benefit of the people rather than based on rhetoric and personal and political bias. Sagar said that Chief Min- ister Omar Abdullah has been keen to take the state on the fast track of develop- ment and the state has seen a revolution in terms of in- frastructural development in rural areas.
