ALTERNATIVE SERVICE BREAK | FALL 2013 – SPRING 2014
North Carolina State University's Alternative Service Break program provides an opportunity to
service work & have a life changing experience by volunteering during the spring break holiday. Partnering w
nonprofit Timmy Global Health, I was one of fourteen students who travelled to Tena, Ecuador &
surrounding Napo Province in March of 2014. I had a life changing experience in Ecuador with my fellow pe
the medical professionals, translators, peace-corps volunteers, brigade coordinators & the people of the N
Province. I was able to experience medical care & treatment up close & first hand while being heavily invol
in treating & caring for patients. Our primary objectives were to provide basic healthcare services to those w
do not readily have access to necessary & essential services such as glucose monitoring, pregnancy te
dental care, & basic medications. This was my first time out of the country & was certainly a big milestone in
life. It has empowered me to think more critically about public & global health, & also motivated me to conti
pursuing my interests in textile innovation, medicine & volunteering.
