MARCH 10, 2017 CLUB CHARTERED 1924 NO. 5169 DISTRICT 7280

We started the meeting with a prayer by George Villegas, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

We met Lori Kennedy, the lone business services representative for the state Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) district that includes Armstrong, Butler, Beaver and Lawrence Counties. She talks to employers, encouraging them to hire people with disabilities that range from physical limitations such as vision impairment to substance abuse and mental health challenges.

Most of the people she works with are not in wheelchairs. They would much rather be working than sitting at home collecting a government check – our taxpayer dollars. They want to work, they just need a chance. All candidates are pre-screened and qualified for the positions to which they apply. They work with professional counselors who assess their capabilities and goals, then figure out what they need to achieve those goals. That often involves education.

“When we send somebody to an employer, we want them to be successful,” Kennedy says.

Last summer Kennedy organized the first OVR academy at Camp Kon-O-Kwee/Spencer, where “campers” met with employers and learned self-advocacy skills. The OVR executive director

attended the camp. His verdict? “I want more.”

The OVR is more than 100 years old, but few have ever heard of it. “It’s largely considered the best-kept secret in Pennsylvania,” said Kennedy, who suffers from chronic migraines and obtained her master’s degree through the OVR.

Today’s Program: They’d Rather Be

Working Today In History On this day in 1876, Alexander Bell uttered the now-famous line through the first working telephone: “Mr. Watson, come here. I want you.”

Today’s Joke What’s red and smells like blue paint?

Answer: Red paint (!)

President Ron Elliott passed around a print-out produced by George Villegas that showed overall age and other statistical information for our club. George got this from our website. Here are some examples of the information: 73% of club members are male and 27% are female; 9% are under age 35 and 34% are age 50-64; and 77% have been members for 10 years or more.

Jeff Simmons updated the members on our District Grant projects for this year. We will install a park bench in the area of the new Zelienople parking lot. We were going to move the Rapp Shelter at the park, but that will be delayed. This means we will need to find a second project of around $1,500. We are looking at helping with the purchase of signs welcoming people to Zelienople. The two projects should total about $3,000. The club will be reimbursed about $1,500 from Rotary Foundation funds that come in the form of District Grants.

President Ron reported that Mary Hess told him her new café will open in late April or early May.

We will have a board meeting on March 22 in the evening at WesBanco. All are welcome to attend.

General Business and Announcements

Next Friday at 7 a.m., please come to the Grace Church gymnasium to help us prepare for the Shamrock Shuffle. Then, please come early the next morning (5:30 a.m. or whenever you can make it) to help make the Shuffle a success!

District 7280 will hold District Assemblies on April 1 in Warren and April 8 in Mercer. Marie Grant provided good information about who should attend: All members are welcome to attend either or both of these. She said the district leaders want club board members and other members to attend. She said new members are encouraged to come so they can find out more about Rotary. For times and locations, see the Rotary District 7280 website -- http://www.rotarydistrict7280.org/news-events. And, contact President Ron or a Board member if you are interested in attending.

We are still seeking nominations for the Grand Marshall and Doc Viola Award at the upcoming Fourth of July Parade. If you have suggestions, please inform a board member.

Robin Weaver was formally made a member this morning. Neal Jackson spoke about the responsibilities of being a member and helped welcome Robin as a member. Tim Mitro, who helped introduce Robin to our club, assisted with the ceremony by giving Robin her Rotary pin.
