4.3 What makes is a signification city and what are the detail? Transportation in Singapore Singapore's public transport system is well-developed. The network of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) trains, buses and taxis serves to shuttle its population across the city state every day, at relatively inexpensive fares. According to the Public Transport Council, which regulates public transport fares in Singapore, bus and subway fares here are lower than in Hong Kong, London and New York City. You can get from one end of the island to the other by bus or train in air-conditioned comfort, for all under SGD2! In addition to the efficient local transport network, Singapore also has an established presence in the international transport arena. Rapid adoption of technology and development of modern infrastructure paved the way for Singapore's transformation from a backwater trading post to one of the world’s most advanced air and sea ports today. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Getting around Singapore is a breeze with the MRT. The four main lines move commuters along the North- South, East-West, North East Lines, and around the city fringe through the Circle Line. SMRT operates the North-South Line which runs from Marina Bay to Jurong East via Woodlands, the East- West Line which runs from Pasir Ris to Joo Koon, and the new, fully-automated Circle Line that links residential areas at the fringe of Singapore’s city centre, to the Marina Bay area and the city centre itself. Singapore’s other transport operator, SBS Transit runs the North-East Line. This line connects the newest residential areas in Punggol and Sengkang to the city centre. Seamless transfer is available to all four main lines, so you can reach almost any part of Singapore, the moment you step onto an MRT train. Upon completion of the fifth main line, called the Downtown Line in 2017, Singapore will be linked by an intricate train system that makes every corner of the island state accessible. Singapore has the world’s #a Cost-Effective Public Transport System Getting around Singapore is very cost-effective, compared to other countries. Besides, Singapore has the world’s best transport system, according to pricewaterhousecoopers’ latest report on sites of opportunity, covering 27 cities at the centre of the world economy.
