ZPASS
The objective of a student identification system is to
improve student safety by obtaining:
Names of students who board or exit a bus
Where a student boards or exits a bus
When a student boards or exits a bus
ZPASS requires students to carry a ID card which
uses radio frequency (RF) technology.
Student riders pass the ID card past a reader which
immediately records the location of the bus.
Location of the bus is immediately available to
transportation staff via web based GPS technology.
Red “Push Pin” indicates exact
location where student exited the bus
Report includes past rider data based on date and event
1. Student must carry the Zpass smart card whenever they ride the bus.
2. Student must pass the card within 3 inches of
the reader each time they board or exit the bus.
3. Students may lose or fail to carry ID card.
4. Parents may become upset when student is not allowed on the bus in the afternoon.
Can the general public find where my child is located?
Answer: No, the system is secure and only approved district staff can view stored data.
Does the system track my child when they are not on the bus?
Answer: No. The system only knows where the bus is located.
Will there be a fee for the student?
Answer: The only fee will be for lost cards. The cost for a lost card is $4.00
What happens if a student does not have their
Zpass card?
Answer: The student will be allowed to board the bus for the ride to school. The driver will remind the student that they must obtain a temporary pass from the school office for the ride home.
Students who do not have a Zpass card or temporary pass will not be allowed on the bus ride home.
What if a student has repeated instances of not presenting
their Zpass card to the driver?
Answer: These types of issues will be addressed
through the district discipline process.
Each day we transport approximately 2,400 passengers.
We pick up or drop off students in local neighborhoods and
as far as Scottsdale to the east and Buckeye to the west.
Our routing system provides us eligible student information
however it does not inform us of who actually rode a bus
on a specific day.
When a student exits the bus, we often assume they are
exiting at the correct location. But are they?
Zpass adds one more tool to ensure student safety. We
feel it is worth the investment.
