1. ExecutiveSummary

1.1. ReportThisreport,writtenbytheArteveldeUniversityCollege(AHS)-projectteam,reflectsthemonitoringandevaluatingofthepilotcoursescreatedwiththeuseoftheFlippingtheClassroom(FTC)methodology.FTCisablendedlearningstrategywiththeaimtoimprovelearnerengagementandoutcomes.Thelearningmethod,amixofindependentlylearningandface-to-faceclassroomteaching,islearneroriented.Thoughitcanbeusedfordifferenttargetgroups,itisverysuitableforadultlearners,especiallybecauseitallowsthemtoacquirethelearningcontentattheirownpace.ThreecourseswerepreparedbythegroupofeducatorswhoweretakingthespecialisedFTC-traininginGhent,taughtbyLutDeJaegherandDriesVanAckerforArteveldeUniversityCollege:

Thecourseswereofferedfreeofcharged,andwereannouncedandopenforregistrationduringtheposterpresentationevent(https://www.arteveldehogeschool.be/oso/posterpresentatie/)atArteveldeUniversityCollegeon21/06/2017,with200participantsfromsecondaryandadulteducationschools.

Atotalof81peopleappliedforparticipationtothepilotsbyprovidingtheiremailandname.Atwhole60participatedandfinishedandanother21willtakethecoursefromMarchtoJune2018becauseitfitsbetterintheirschedule.Theregistrationfortheonlinepartsstillremainsopenandwillbeleftopeninthefollowingyearsformorelearners.Thecourseswereannouncedaspilots,andeachlearnercouldtakethewholecourseorapartaccordingtohisorherinterestsandpace.Itwasinterestingtoseethatsomeofthelearnerswereworkingontheonlinepartsallbythemselves,whileotherswereworkinginpairstolearnthecontent.SomeofthemwerenotonlyexperiencingthisFTCteachingmethodusingthepilot,butalsostartedexperimentinghowtocreatetheirownF2Fcourse.Theeducatorsdidagoodjob,creatinginteresting,participativeandattractivecoursesthatwerehighlyappreciatedbythelearnersascanbedeductedfromresultsoftheevaluationofthepilotswiththestandardisedquestionnairesdevelopedbytheiFlippartners.

1.2. BackgroundinformationThe3coursesweredevelopedandcreatedbythesameteachersthatfollowedtheFCTtraininginGhentinApril2017.Eachofthemcreatedcoursesaccordingtotheirknowledgeandinterests.Theychoosecontentsthatcanseamlesslybeimplementedforadulteducationinawiderangeoftraininginstitutes.The3coursescanbefoundontheLMSenvironmentoftheArteveldeUniversityCollege(Chamilo)andontheiFlip-website.

Thevideosaremostlyuploadedtotheteachers’channelonYouTubewithalinkintheLMScourse.Forthevideorecordingtheeducatorsusedasimplestandalonecamera,asmartphoneoraniPad.Tomakesurethesoundisclear,thesoundwascapturedseparatelyfromtheimages,withanexternalmicroorahandyrecorder(H4nPro),whichgaveaperfectsoundwithoutnoise.

EducatorsandlearnerslikedverymuchtheanimationsmadewithIntroLite,averyeasytouseandfreetabletapp.

5. EvaluationTheevaluationofthepilotsisdonebystandardizedquestionnairesforlearnersandtrainers,developedbyAkademiaHumanistyczno-EkonomicznawLodzifortheiFlipproject.Thesequestionnaireswereonlypresentedtolearnerswhoregisteredandparticipatedatthecourse.Theparticipationgradetothecourseswas74%.Peoplewhoregisteredbutdidn’tparticipatewereinterestedbutdroppedoffbecauseoflackoftime.15%ofthemdeclaredthewishtotakethecourseattheirownpaceandatamomentthatfitsbetterintheirtimeschedule.80%fromthelearnerswhoparticipatedatthecourseattendedtheF2Fclasses.27learnersfilledinthequestionnaireattheendofthecourse,9iFlippilotBE01(BE01),8iFlippilotBE02(BE02)and9iFlippilotBE03(BE03).

5.3. Adultlearnersevaluation:conclusions

5.3.1. iFlippilotBE01Learnersevaluatethispilotpositively.Thefactthatthere’sapositivetoverypositivescorefor“methodhelpslearningandunderstanding”and“helpfulinlearning”provesthatFTCisasuccessfulteachingandlearningmethod.Attentionshouldbepaidto“trainingtime”(1negative).Aslearnershaveavarietyofbackgrounds,noteverylearnerlearnsatthesamepace.Differentiationshouldbepossibleatanytime.Exceptfor1learner,allothersfindthepilotcontentusableindailylife.Thewrittencommentfromthislearnerwas:“Iwouldverymuchliketousethis,butIcan’timaginefindingthetimetodoso”.Writtencomments:

5.3.2. iFlippilotBE02Learnersevaluatethispilotpositivetoverypositive,aswellasconcerningthemethod,thecontentandtheF2Flessons.Learnersfindthemethodeasytouseandhelpfulinlearningandwereunanimouslypositiveaboutthetrainers’support.Attentionshouldbepaidtothetrainingtimeandtheequipment.Theeducatorsexperiencedthisindeed.Thoughthelessoncontentispreparedinawaytomakeitpossibleforeverylearnertofolloweverysubject,forsomethiswasn’teasybecausetheydidn’thaveanypre-knowledgeaboutsomeofthesubjects.Learnerswouldrecommendthecoursetoothers.Writtencomments:

5.3.3. iFlippilotBE03Thiscoursewasverymuchappreciatedbythelearners.Impressiveisthehighscoreforthe2questionsconcerningtheteacheroreducator.Thiscouldleadtotheconclusionthatcoursesorhighlyappreciatedwhentheteacheroreducatorisverymuchconcernedandreadytosupportandanswerquestionsatanytime.Thefactthatthere’s1learnerwhofindstheinstructionsjustclearenough(neutral),whereasalltheothersfindtheinstructionsclear(good,verygood)pointsoutapointofattention.Learnersshouldalwaysmakesurethateveryoneunderstandstheinstructions.Writtencomments:

5.5. ConclusionandrecommendationsTheFTCmethodishighlyappreciatedbyeducatorsandlearners.Theresources,inawidevariety(video,PowerPointwithspokentext,text,pictures,linkstowebsitesandonlinematerial,podcastsetc)givelearnerstheopportunitytolearnattheirownpace.Whilepreparingthepilots,theeducatorsdiscoveredmoreandmorepossibilitiestouseinteractivity,givefeedback,organisethecontent.Itinspiredthemtobecomemoreandmorecreativeindevelopingandpresentingthecontentandtoinstallfeedback,discussionandworksessions.Foradultlearners,FTCandthevariationofmediaandotherresourcesusedmadethecontentattractiveandinterestingtolearnandgavethepossibilitytorecapture,rewind,getandgivefeedback,discusswithpeersandeducatorsandtoaskquestions.TheF2Fmomentswereexperiencedasintenseandinteresting,bothforthelearnersandtheeducators,becausethelearnerscametoclasswithalotoffeedback,questions,ideas.AlllefttheF2Fmomentswithalotofinspiration.NowthatthepilotsarerealizedandtheknowhowtodevelopcoursecontentwiththeFTCmethod,thetechniquewillbeinstalledinthecurriculumoftheteachertraininginArteveldehogeschool.With1500studentsstudyingtobecomeateacherinsecondaryeducationandalargeamountofteachers,alsofromadulteducation,attendingtheArteveldehogeschoolforatrainingorcompletioncourse,manyfutureeducatorscanbeinstructedandguidedintheuseofFTC.TheteachereducatorsfromtheArteveldehogeschoolwillalsogetnumerousofopportunitiestobetrainedintheFTCmethod.ThematerialdevelopedforiFlipwillbeveryusefultorealizethis.
