u STRONG BEGINNING FOR BATESAfter battling injuries throughout her career, senior outside hitter
Cadie Bates has been a key contributor to the 2017 Blue Devils,
playing all six rotations. Through 21 matches, Bates leads the team
with 255 kills, 106 higher than her previous career high (149) set
in 2015. She totaled a career-best 20 kills in the season opener
at Colorado State and is the only Blue Devil to reach 20 kills in a
match this season. Bates has also been solid on defense and leads
the Blue Devils with 11 double-doubles. She trails only libero Nicole
Elattrache in total digs and digs per set this season while also
leading Duke with 17 service aces.
u SCHWANTZ’ IMMEDIATE IMPACTFreshman outside hitter Payton Schwantz has enjoyed a tremen-
dous start to her collegiate career. The rookie from Frisco, Texas is
second on the team in total kills (246) and kills per set (3.00) while
hitting .250 on the year. Schwantz has recorded double-digit kills
in 15 of Duke’s 21 matches this season, including seven straight
from Sept. 2-22. She was named ACC Freshman of the Week
Sept. 11 after leading the Blue Devils to an undefeated weekend
at the Fight in the Fort at TCU tournament and also earned all-
tournament team honors for her efforts. Schwantz also picked up
2017 Duke Invitational All-Tournament accolades at the conclusion
of the Blue Devils’ annual tournament.
u ELATTRACHE REACHES 1,000 CAREER DIGSSenior Nicole Elattrache became the 23rd player in program

u RIGHTSIDE HITTERSIn addition to outside hitters Cadie Bates and Payton Schwantz,
Duke has received solid efforts from its rightside hitters. Sopho-
more Samantha Amos -- a 2016 All-ACC Freshman Team pick
-- leads the team with a .262 hitting percentage while accruing 179
kills. Amos has eight matches of 10-plus kills to her credit this sea-
son, including a career-high 18-kill performance Oct. 22 at Virginia
Tech. Sophomore Natalie Schilling was also a key contributor on
the rightside before suffering a season-ending injury. Junior Jessi
Bartholomew has filled that spot, record three-straight matches of
10 or more kills. Bartholomew is also hitting .287 in that span and
averaging 1.44 blocks per set.
u BALANCED OFFENSESetters Emma Paradiso and Sarah Nelson have run Duke’s 6-2
system this season. Those two have helped Duke rank fourth in the
ACC in assists per set (12.72) and fifth in kills per set (13.49). Duke
is the only school to rank in the top five in the ACC in kills per set
without an individual hitter in the league’s top 10 in kills.
u NAGEL REACHES 600 WINSHead coach Jolene Nagel earned her 600th career victory in
Duke’s straight-set victory over TCU Sept. 9 in Fort Worth, Texas.
With the victory, Nagel became the 22nd active NCAA Division I
head coach to reach 600 career wins and joined Florida State’s
Chris Poole and North Carolina’s Joe Sagula as the only three ACC
coaches to reach the milestone. For her coaching career, Nagel
owns a 608-341 record with stints at Cornell, Georgetown and
Duke. In her 19th season with the Blue Devils, Nagel owns a 405-
201 record at Duke including a 243-103 mark in the ACC.
u MEYER AT THE NETJunior middle blocker Leah Meyer has missed 13 matches this
season due to injury. In six contests this season, Meyer totaled 29
blocks and averaged 1.45 blocks per set. With Meyer in the lineup,
Duke averages 2.43 blocks per set as a team, compared to a 1.47
blocks-per-set clip in her absence. For her career, Meyer has aver-
aged 1.20 blocks per set, good for fourth all-time at Duke.
