The Donovan Scholarship is a tuition waiver program for adults aged 65 and older to take academic courses at the University of Kentucky. Donovan Scholars can enroll in courses listed in the UK General Catalog and in limited UK online courses. Acceptance is based upon available space, may require the consent of the instructor and/or have prerequisites. Donovan Scholars may audit courses for the joy of learning (no exams, papers or other assignments required), take classes for credit without working toward a degree or take classes for credit as a degree-seeking candidate.

There is no previous educational requirement for Donovan Scholars not seeking a degree, whether auditing a course or taking it for credit. When working toward a degree, UK admissions criteria must be met. There is no limit on the number of semesters a person may enroll.

This is a class that discusses the history, culture and religion of the Celtic people. It starts off describing exactly who the Celtic people are and where they came from and how their features of spirituality were adapted into the Celtic Christian Church. Then, we will discuss the rise of the ancient Celtic Christian Church and Celtic monasticism which includes the main Celtic saints: Saint Patrick, Saint Brigid and Saint Columba of Iona. We will then describe the decline of that church and where it stands today. Along the way we will discuss the history of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Britain, including the influence of the Roman Empire on Britain.

Italian Baroque ArtInstructor: Michael WorleyDates and Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays, September 29 – December 3, (No class November 3 & 26)1 – 2 p.m. Location: Online Zoom CourseMaximum Enrollment: 40 | Course Fee: $25

This course covers 17th century Italian art, with a focus on Rome, and the evolution of the Baroque style, which begins as a reaction against Mannerism. In the Carracci Academy in Bologna, the emphasis was on looking at nature, as well as Greco-Roman masterpieces and High Renaissance masters. There will be one unit on architecture and another on sculpture. Caravaggio began a parallel movement of intense naturalism, which had a great number of followers. We will continue with High Baroque and awesome examples of ceiling decoration. There was also an undercurrent of “philosopher-painters” who selected unusual historical and religious themes, scenes of witchcraft, and stoic philosophers contemplating the human condition. Finally, if time allows, we will cover landscape, genre painting and still-life. The Zoom format is still experimental and the goals of the original course may have to be altered.

This class explores the unique partnership that occurred in Renaissance Florence between artists, patrons, and the community at large. We will examine Florentine art commissioned by the guilds, the monastic community, private patrons, as well as the art commissioned by the ducal courts of Urbino and Mantua, and will discuss the major artistic currents that swept across Italy from the fourteenth through the sixteenth centuries. In addition to considering key themes such as the revival of antiquity, religious devotion, and artistic style, we will survey significant works by artists and architects including Giotto, Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo, Botticelli, Alberti, Michelangelo, and many others.

Many people would like to avoid seeing a physician when they ail or hurt, but they don’t always know the best way to do so. This course will introduce you to the world of over-the-counter medicine, the products available without a prescription that the average person can use to treat pain, stomach ache, allergies, rashes and the like. We will also discuss when NOT to use the different treatments, when self-medicating can be harmful. We will not discuss any drugs that are available by prescription only, nor any drugs/products that are not FDA approved.

This class will be a Vinyasa style yoga class connecting breath to movement. Each class will begin with short breathing and meditation exercises, moving into Sun Salutations. In this year of the Census, this course will examine aspects of population studies: the size, distribution, and composition of populations. We will examine their fertility, mortality, and migration patterns and include attention to the socio-economic, racial, health, and other characteristics of various populations. Special attention will be given to the situation in less developed nations (such as China) as well as to that in the United States. While most of the focus will be on the current situation, attention will also be given to historic patterns.

American theologian Paul Tillich has written that culture is how people interact based on their common understanding of Truth that is their value system, their religion. American sociologist Peter Berger has asserted that people crave meaning, that religion provides this and social solidarity with all united in a common understanding of reality. The Judeo-Christian religion, intertwined with Greek rationalism and idealism, underlies the western world’s ethos and its expressions in daily patterns of living. This course examines the creation of the Western Tradition, its values and world-view, and how American culture is one distillation of that tradition. It will consider the meaning and ramifications of Americans’ understanding of community, the individual’s proper relationship to community and the purpose and rightful authority of government.

It seems as soon as there is language, there are songs and poems, which means we have more than 1500 years worth of German poetry to explore. In 8 sessions we will sample some of German’s best, looking first at the poem in its original form, but focusing primarily on the images and ideas of the poem in English. Can the poet still speak to us across the gap of time and language? Does the poem still have the power to bring insights to our lives today? Join us on Zoom as we encounter these poems together.

Within each week’s session there will be at least one listening example of Choral Music followed by a class discussion of the various elements of music, as well as a discussion of quality choral / vocal skills and artistry. Effects of Chemical, Biological and Nuclear Weapons

This is a continuation of the class that was interrupted due to the pandemic, so this class will discuss only biological and chemical weapons. You don’t need to have attended the nuclear classes to take this course. No science background is necessary.

It will be easy to use the events of the past few months to discuss how biological agents can be effective weapons of mass “disruption” as much as mass “destruction.” We’ll discuss the 3 CDC categories of bioweapons; the BioWatch program to monitor for the release of an agent, and add some information about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, such as basic information on its cellular mode of action, the different types of tests, and a bit about vaccine development. The section on chemical weapons will include information about the 8 classes of weapons and the activity now going on near Richmond to destroy the last remaining nerve agents in the US. There will be extra information about riot control agents, since we’ve been hearing a lot about these during recent protests.

Geology Rocks! The People and Ideas that Shaped the Science

From a time when early peoples extracted red ochre from the earth to use for body art & cave art, through fevered discussions by geologists on the age of the earth and fossil life forms to the ideas of plate tectonics & paleomagnetism to contemporary geological discoveries on other planets.

Each class will begin with a short (approximately 15 min) lecture to introduce the specific topic of the day. Some of the topics to be covered are: hard vs soft edges, intense vs muted colors, best placement of the focal point, reflections in water, and the color of shadows. Following the lecture, the instructor will be available for follow up discussion, questions, or class critique of any art that students have an interest in. Finally, in the remainder of the class (usually about 1.5 hour) the instructor will demonstrate a painting technique related to the topic of the day. Students may watch the demonstration, paint along with the demonstration, or work on any personal project they wish.

Occasionally, we attend classes put on by others or visit libraries or other genealogy-related facilities.

BOONE BALDWINBoone is retired from his two businesses: Baldwin Distributing Company and Boone Photo Graphics. He joined the Central Kentucky Computer Society in 2011 and his interests have been promoting photography. He has taught many classes on all phases of photography, from beginner to advanced.

SUSAN BOTTOMSusan graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1969, and received a master’s in public affairs from Indiana University in 1981. She continues to teach classes on American and British history and Mother Goose and Fairy Tales. Susan periodically leads A Course Is Born for those who want a little help putting an OLLI class together.

SHIRLEY BRYANShirley has been dancing most of her life! Always trying to improve her skills she holds a National Teachers Association Level 3 certificate. Striving to teach the best dance methods, material is presented to enhance cognitive learning. She enjoys traveling across the United States to dance events to fuel her passion.

JOE DIETZJoe has been a member/instructor at Central Kentucky Computer Society since 1996. He serves as vice-president on the board of directors and is an instructor for the Beginning and Advanced/Independent Digital Imaging classes using Corel’s PaintShop Pro. Joe also heads up CKCS Digital Photography Special Interest Group and orchestrates the monthly and annual photo contest.

LEE EDGERTONLee Edgerton is retired from the Department of Animal & Food Science at the University of Kentucky. He was a recipient of a great teacher award sponsored by the UK Alumni Association and a Master Teacher Award within the College of Agriculture sponsored by Gamma Sigma Delta. He is a member of Sunrise Toastmasters and of Lexington Storytellers. He has twice been a featured teller at Lexington’s Wandering Storytellers and has been a featured storyteller at a Road Scholar program in Pokagon State Park in Indiana.

DAVE EMERSONDave attended the University of Kentucky and NewYork University. He has worked for the U.S. Army(Judge Advocate General’s Corps) and PrivatePractice of Law. Dave has also previously been aDonovan Fellows Student.

SANDY EMERSONSandy is a lover of words and the ways they go together. She started her writing SIG to support writers in their process. She has a graduate degree from UK and spent her career with children who use their words to say the darnedest things.

MYRA ENGLEMyra has a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University and a M.Ed. from Xavier University. She is the instructor of Computer Basics, Organizing Personal Computer Files and Making Personal Notecards for Central Kentucky Computer Society for 14 years and an instructor for OLLI for 4 years. She has passion for tennis, learning, teaching, enjoys painting (water color, acrylics, oils), crafts/needlework and is an avid reader.

MARCIA FREYMANMarcia has a master’s degree in art history from George Washington University. She has taught Survey of Art History and Introduction to Art at UK, EKU and BCTC. She has taken students to Florence, Italy to teach Renaissance art history.

JOSETTE GARSTKAJosette has worked in the fitness industry for more than 40 years. She is certified through the American Fitness Association of America and holds certifications to teach Silver Sneaker Aerobics, Circuits, Water Fitness and Yoga. She is trained and certified to teach mat Pilates and Pilates Reformer, and is a member of Yoga International and Yoga Alliance.

DON MARSHALL GASH, PH.D. Don is a Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience in the College of Medicine and the Lewis Honors College. Teaching has been an important part of his career in Academia beginning as a graduate student at Dartmouth College 50 years ago. He has published 3 books and over 200 scientific papers, articles and letters on neuroscience, aging and the diseases of aging.

ALICE GOLDSTEINAlice has served for some 25 year as a demographic research associate at Brown University, with specialization in Historical demography, the demography of American Jewry and issues of modernization in Asia and Africa. Alice was born in Germany just before the Nazis came to power and experienced first hand the onset of the regime’s actions against Jews. She has spoken extensively to a variety of audiences (but especially middle and high school students) about her own experiences and the causes for the rise of Nazism.

FRANCES GOODFRIENDFrances has taught literature and history at the secondary and college level, and has led various small group discussions for young people and adults. She is the facilitator for the Favorite Classic Novels SIG.

LARRY HOODLarry has a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Kentucky. He was a Certified Public Manager for 30 years in state government and has 30+ years of teaching experience in western civilization, American, and Kentucky history. Larry has also edited books, published review essays, and published articles and books on Kentucky history, American history and western civilization.

GERARD HOWELLGerard is a retired minister and chaplain who writes for fun and to pass a story history of his life to his two children. His lack of personal discipline requires the weekly group meeting for motivation. He leans toward writing biographical and fictional stories, and the power and richness of short stories have always appealed to him. He majored in sociology and theology and minored in history and English.

KURT JEFFERSONKurt began teaching Mac classes on Saturday mornings back in the late 1990s using Mac OS 9. Eventually, in addition to the operating system, he began teaching ClarisWorks and Mac classes for Pages. When Apple introduced the iPad in 2010, Kurt began teaching classes in iOS in addition to Pages and Numbers for the iPad.

BARBARA KEMPBarbara Kemp is a registered pharmacist with a PharmD from the University of Kentucky. She practiced at Kroger Pharmacy, Good Samaritan Hospital, Lifetek/Medshares Infusion Group, Walmart Pharmacy, Geri-Care Pharmacy and Omnicare Pharmacy. She received credentials as a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist. She retired in 2018.

TOM KRILLFor the past several years, Tom has been the editor of Henry Clay Stamp Notes, the monthly publication of the Henry Clay Philatelic Society. He began collecting stamps in his grade school years but like many of us dropped the hobby midway through high school. Years later he was posted to Hong Kong where, over a period of 14 years, he developed a renewed interest in the hobby collecting stamps of the British colony and Burma. He, his wife Akemi and son Ken moved to Lexington from Hong Kong in 1986. He has since developed a topical collection of bonsai on stamps and a modest collection of Japanese stamps.

PENNY LAMBPenny is a retired Asbury University faculty member where, among other responsibilities, she taught German for 33 years. She has graduate degrees in German and Comparative Literature from Indiana University - Bloomington. She began taking OLLI courses as soon as she retired, and in 2015, realizing how much she would enjoy it, Penny began teaching OLLI courses. Penny relishes the challenge of preparing a new course, but the greatest pleasure comes from helping OLLI scholars increase their understanding of the world.

PHIL MAXSONPhil has taught numerous OLLI history courses including “Kentucky and the Civil War,” the “Invasion of Kentucky,” “Camp Nelson” and “Kentucky’s Lincoln.” Phil has also led several OLLI history tours of downtown Lexington, Perryville, the Lexington Cemetery and Camp Nelson.

MARY BETH MCCORMACMary Beth was an educator for over 40 years before retiring to Lexington in 2018. She has a Ph.D. in Education and has taught at the graduate level. She loves reading, gardening, traveling, and photography. She is the facilitator for “The Next Chapter” Shared Interest Group.

DIANA RASTDiana was born and raised in London, England, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in geology and zoology at London University. Her working career has included the oil industry, academia and administration. In 2012 she retired from the University of Kentucky and immediately joined OLLI. Diana enjoys worldwide travel for research and pleasure. She has hiked in the Andes of Peru, kayaked in the frigid seas of Alaska and studied volcanoes in Mexico.

JOE SCHUMJoe is a self-taught artist who paints in both oils and acrylics. He is retired from Lexmark International where he had extensive experience in pigments and polymer coatings similar to those used in oil/acrylic painting. His subject matter ranges from still life, landscape, human and animal portraits. He holds a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Kentucky.

MIKE SEILERMike was a high school teacher for thirty-five years and taught Mathematics and Computer Programming. He started volunteering and teaching classes at CKCS in 2006. He has served as Vice President and President of CKCS and is currently on its board. He is an ambassador for the Lexington Sister Cities program. Mike is also a member of the Central Kentucky Mended Hearts chapter and has been active in their program of visiting open-heart surgery patients at Baptist Health hospital since 2007.

LISA SMITH Lisa has a bachelor’s degree in art history from Miami University, a master’s degree in art education and a master’s degree in art history, both from The Ohio State University, and began course work for her Ph.D. in art history at the Graduate School and University Center, CUNY in New York City. Her areas of specialization are contemporary art, critical theory, feminism, and film. Ms. Smith has 20 years of experience teaching a variety of art history courses. She loves sharing her enthusiasm for art with others.

JOHN STEGNER John has been a music educator for over 35 years. He has served as a guest conductor/clinician in Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and at the International Choral Festival in Tian Jin and Shenyang, China. John was named Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Kentucky Music Educators Association and Outstanding Teacher of the Arts by the National Association of Arts Educators. John is also the director of Les Jongleurs and the Carver Community Choir.

SEETHA SUBRAMANIAN Seetha was born in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India, and grew up in London, England, where she received her degrees in math and physics. After moving to Philadelphia in 1974, Seetha taught mathematics in South Philly high school, and then as a teaching assistant in the math and physics departments of the University of Kansas. In 1980 - 81, she taught math and physics at the University of Kentucky. Seetha started teaching for OLLI in the Fall 2013.

DIANE SUTTON Diane’s love of group fitness began in the early 90s as a class participant. Her fitness instructor asked her to substitute a class and this led to a 30+ year career in the fitness and wellness industry. Diane has taught classes and had administrative roles at the YMCA, the YWCA, Falling Springs Recreation Center and most recently for Baptist HealthwoRx Lexington. Diane holds numerous certifications from accredited institutions for personal training and instructing group fitness. Now retired from full-time positions, she enjoys teaching group fitness hopes to be able to continue for many years to come!

BROOKE THOMASBrooke is the president of the Central Kentucky Computer Society. In addition to volunteering at CKCS, she is a volunteer ESL teacher of adults for Operation Read and is a volunteer with Altrusa International of Lexington. She enjoys helping people understand technology and encouraging students to have fun while learning. Her professional life prior to retiring was manager of the Adoption and Foster Care programs for the state of Kentucky.

KEMPA TURNERKempa originally joined the OLLI program to attend a writing group to hone her own writing skills that were put off while teaching and raising a family. She has led the writing 2.0 group for the past two years and enjoyed it greatly. Her early years, though born in Kentucky, were spent on both coasts as she was the only daughter of a Marine Corp officer, but landed back in Kentucky to finish her undergraduate and graduate degrees. She spends her well-earned retirement continuing to learn, travel and meet interesting people.

DIANE VANCEDiane was a high school teacher before earning a Ph.D. in radioanalytical chemistry at University of Kentucky, where she studied Alzheimer ’s disease. She then worked as a training director and scientist in the U.S. nuclear weapons complex before taking a faculty position at Eastern Kentucky University. At EKU, Diane taught a variety of chemistry and forensic science courses and was the director of the forensic science program.

MICHAEL WORLEYMichael specialized in 17th and 18th century French and Italian art for his graduate degrees at the University of Chicago. French government scholarships allowed him to spend two years in France - one in Paris where he did dissertation research. He also has hands-on experience with paintings from his 14-year position as art historian and librarian at a private Chicago art gallery. Michael has published articles in scholarly art journals and entries in The Dictionary of Art and in museum catalogues. He has taught abroad and at various locations in Chicago but regards his time with OLLI as the highlight of his career.

DENNIS ZLOSELDennis and his wife Mary relocated to Georgetown about 3 years ago from Florida. Their daughter, Jessica, lives in Charlotte and their son, Nicholas, lives in Dubuque. Dennis has been retired for 6 years after working at SC Johnson and Son (a family owned, household chemical company) for about 30 years. He’s been an OLLI member for 1 year and serves on the Donovan Lecture series committee. During his free time Dennis enjoys golfing, riding his bicycle, traveling (hopefully some day soon) and exercising. Dennis is a recent Donovan Scholarship recipient and will be attending UK as an undergrad this fall.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN OLLI AT UK? Any adult 50 years of age and older is eligible to register for OLLI membership, courses, events, SIGs, trips, etc. HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?Membership can be purchased online or mailed-in with your semester registration. When registering online, membership must be completed first before courses can be selected.

HOW LONG DOES MY MEMBERSHIP LAST?All annual memberships are effective from August 1 through July 31. Summer membership is prorated.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR A COURSE ONLINE?When a class is open for registration, it will have an “Add to Cart” button to the right of the description. If it is already full, it will have a “Wait List” button. Always add yourself to the wait list. Additional spaces may be added and there is no fee to be on the list.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE TO REGISTER ONLINE ONCE I LOG IN?It is helpful to decide which courses you would like in advance. Class space is not held until the payment process is completed.

If you are on the wait list and do not get into your requested course, we will re-fund your course fee once it is determined no spaces will become available or upon request. Refunds of course fees are not available for students who have enrolled but were unable to attend. Membership fees are non-refundable.

Scholarships are available to cover the cost of OLLI course fees or educational offerings such as one day intensives, trips and workshops. Individual scholarships of up to $50 are available each semester. First-time applicants will be given priority. Current and prospective members are encouraged to apply. THE CHAFFIN-KASH AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN WRITING2021 AWARD

A short history of the Chaffin-Kash Award: Lillie D. Chaffin-Kash, 1974 Kentucky Associate Poet Laure-ate, Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet, and award-winning Kentucky author, lived from 1925 – 1993. She was a graduate of Pikeville College and Eastern Kentucky University, where she was a non-traditional student

and life-long learner. While she began her career as an elementary school teacher and librarian, it was in the 1960’s that she became a freelance writer of poetry and books for children. During her distinguished career,

she received many awards and accolades for her picture books and poetry, 300 or more which were included in anthologies and journals. Lillie served as an instructor from 1972-74 in UK’s annual Writing Workshop for People Over 57, ongoing from 1967-1995, teaching poetry and children literature. She left a generous bequest

to the university to fund the, “The Chaffin-Kash Award for Excellence in Writing”.
