H ow tru e to real life w as th a t of th e chase of ja ck rabbits, the w rite r d id no t know till recen tly .

On read ing M rs. Lew W allace’s book en titled “ The L and of the P ueblos” she learned th a t the Pueblo boy (B ennie Thom as, w as it, not, m y friend?) who drew th a t p icture, was g iv ing a sketch of an am usem ent th a t had been his special de ligh t in h is hom e life, in stead of d raw ing upon his im ag ina tion as she had alw ays supposed.

T hat p ic ture w ith o thers described in the artic le m entioned lias been safely kep t in a portfolio and often draw n ou t lo prove the na tive ta len t for a r t possessed by C arlisle p u pils.

To-day, the chase of the Ja c k R abb itsfo r its h isto rical value stands forem ost and it is suggested, if Mrs. W allace brings out a new ed ition of lier “ L and of the Pueblos” she m igh t consider th e p ic tu re an add ition to its pages as an illu stra tion of th e ' sports she describes th a t people as en joy ing ,w ith those long-eared an im als. A m elia E lseeday ’s le tte r th is week from h e r coun try hom e is very n icely w ritten and well expressed . W hen we look back on ly a few years and rem em ber w hen A m elia could no t speak a word of E n g lish , we can n o t help b u t feel glad w ith her th a t she is able to ta lk and understand and do for herse lf. W e have fifty-seven girls out in co u n try hom es, ail doing for them selves, an d m ost of th em m ak ing very good records. H ow proud they should feel th a t they are able an d liav 1 a chance to take care of them selves.

“ Oh, I d o n ’t like F rid a y evenings, for I have n o th in g to do ,” one g irl was h ea rd to say to ano ther la s t F rid ay evening. The industrious g irls like an off evening very m uch. On F rid a y evenings in tTn« fWfls’ Qua? for*; a* mie passes thrtftfgin

Did you get a v a len tin e?

Ju a n ita is the cham pion “ jack stone" p layer.

W e had a nice lis t of subscribers from the Crow A geucy th is week.

The w agon shop boys have la tely finished a good substan tia l wagon for farm use.

The wee girls ho ld n ig h tly singing-school in th e absence of th e o lder ones a t study-hour.

K ish H aw k in s led the S unday evening service, and gave a very ea rnest and im pressive ta lk .

A G rand piano and two cabin :t org :ns have arrived . The p iano has been placed in the new chapel.

The ca rpen te rs a re .m ak ing clo thes closets for the L arge B oys’ Q uarte rs and a d isplay case for the school-room .

The nrnm gem ent-nf h a ir of the older girls is m uch more w om anly than tu e ir fo rm er fash ion of b raid ing it down the hack.

P ain te rs are busily engaged upon the inside w ork of tin; gym nasium . Ii requires a - te a lv nerve and clear head to clim b w nere they are obliged to go to paint.

Tlie large new cistern was pum ped dry th is week b y U u c le S am ” the fire engine. Tw enty or th ir ty hoys pum ping th e strong arm s of th e engine 'eao m ake the w ater fly.

F ran k Lock took d in n e r w ith Mrs. Y ates on S unday and claim s hav ing an enjoyable tim- . l i e w ishes to th a n k her for tier kind in v ita tion and hosp itality .

The little g irls th in k it lots of fun when th e ir m other allows them an ex tra piece of bread or two w ith which to play tea-party . Yes, and they are high teas too, for they are generally up stairs.

Let us have a challenge from the G irls’ L it- j e ra ry Society to th a t of the B oys’ D ebating | C lub, o r vice versa, to pub lic ly discuss some question .

One o f the girls is tak in g and filling o rders for very p re tty th read-lace. A no ther m ade six ty -live cen ts la s t week by doing odds and ends of m ending.

M rs. Cam pbell re tu rned from P h ilade lph ia , on S atu rday . H er baby Irene is doing as well as can be expected and is contented and happy in her u n c le ’s home.

Is it so th a t our 1(17 girls m ake m ore ch a tte r aud noise a t supper titan 27k boys? The M an- j on-tlie-band-stand would ra th e r bear th a t th e ! g irls led in qu ie t orderliness.

P erhaps A -te-ka’s first-page story will lead our teachers to inqu ire about tlie d raw ings of th e ir pupils, and learn if they really are pictures of hom e life o r only fancy.

The boys who are th e best and fastest shoem akers and tlie good w ork the harness shop boys did in the absence of Mr. K em p, were noticed in the R td Man, ju s t out for F eb ru ary .

Some hoys are careless: W hat did th a t boy w ant who wr'fce “ h a te ” on one of th e request papers. A n o tiu 1* w anted “ Gen spa nee" an- i o ther “ J a i n t " ’a n o t h e r 1 Je an p a n s ;” an o th e r I “ J e a n ;" ano ther “ J e a n ;” another “ Gin er I p a n t.” W h a t in the world d id they w ant ?

By tlie tim e th a t the news of our cyclone reached the te legraph w ires in E ngland it read th a t th e storm occured w hile our pupils were in school and tn a t very few escaped serious I in ju ry . L ette rs from friends in E ng land have b e e n ' recen tly received m ak ing an x io u s in qu iry about us.

The t im e r s have been busy rep len ish ing the k itchen w ith cooking utensils, they are w aiting for good w eather to put up the spou ting on the Large Boys’ Q uarters, w hich was dem olished by the cyc lone.

Isn ’t it ridiculous th a t we can ’t keep step w ith tlie 11*ft- foot at th e righ t tim e in tlie m usic? I Guess we will leave to give it up. T hat coins l.o be one "of th e tilings we a le too stup i to learn .

H ave you noticed th a t the re are 15 faces in the new group of p rin te rs given for five subscribers? See ‘ S tand ing O il;:-.” The p icture now offered is a m uch better group than the old one.

CapL P ra tt has ju s t re tu rned from a w eek’s tr ip to New E ngland , New York and P h ilad e lphia. In H artford he saw N ancy C ornelius, w ho is happy and contented w ith her new occupation . She is doing well, and has the rA spect of all tier associates in th e school of n m - ing w here she is tak in g a course.

W e fire pleased to learn th a t our friend Lt. Geo. L cK o j Brown of the A rm y who assisted Capl. P ra tt soon afte r tlie C arlisle school first opened, over n ine years ago, has now received the appo in tm en t of Prof, of A rm y T actics a t D elaw are College, N ew ark ,\ Del.

Some th in k th a t the item anno u n c in g our exh ib ition on exhib ition n igh ts , a- to -n ig lit for instance, is a “ c h e s tn u t." The Man-oo- the-baud-stand heard a young lady s iv so. It is a part of the M an-on -the -band -stand 's news, however, and m ust be to id , of course. T he usual exh ib ition will not lie g iven to -n igh t, on account of o ther doitigs.
