CourseOverviewThequoteabovesignifiesthatasleaders,wearefacedwithopportunities.Theseopportunitiesforceustoweighethicalstandardsofpracticewithourownmoralfoundationsinanefforttopracticeauthenticityandmoveourorganizationsforward.Thiscanbeextremelydifficult,asthechallengesthatwefacearemuddiedwithpolitical,cultural,andsocialvariables.Howeveroureducationandthecapacitiesandskillsthatdevelopthroughitprovideuswithacompasswhenusedeffectively.Thiscourseaimstomakesenseofthatcompassandapplyittothesituationswefaceonadailybasisinanappliedway.Themostimportantcapacitiesandskillsthatstudentswilldevelopinthisclassareprimarilyinternalones(i.e.,perception,insightintocausesofproblemsamongindividualswithingroupcontexts,self-awarenessofmoralfoundations,ethicalcontextualanalysisandunderstanding,andanunderstandingofdynamicsnecessaryforlong-termsolutionstoethicallychallengingproblems).Giventheirparticipationinthiscourse,studentsshouldhaveagreaterunderstandingfortheintersectionbetweenmoralityandethics,moralimagination,andappliedorganizationalethics.ThiscoursewillhaveapplicationforcontextswithinthefieldsofAgriculture,NaturalResources,andbeyond.

EthicalTrajectory:Studentsareaskedtocompletea5-6pagedouble-spacedpaperassessingtheirunderstandingofwhotheyareandhowthatrelatestotheirmoralfoundationforethicalleadership.Thispaperwillbedevelopedthroughaself-reflectiveprocessaimedatself-awarenessandtrajectorydevelopment.Thispapershouldprovideexplicitopportunitiesforgrowthwithjustificationforwhyitiscriticaltoaddressthesewithinagricultural,naturalresource,andrelatedcontexts.Moredetailswillbegiveninclass.PhilosophicalEncounter:Studentsareaskedtointerviewaphilosopher(aliveornot).Theinterviewshouldprovidethephilosopher’sperspectivesonleadershipandthecurrentstateofsociety.Thestudentisthenaskedtoprovidearebuttaltothephilosopher’sperspectives.Moredetailswillbegiveninclass.

LeadershipEthicsManifesto:Thisassignmentasksstudentstoexploreandsynthesizetheclassideas,materials,andtheoriesalongwiththeirownexperiencesandperspectives.Thestudents’manifestoshouldincludeasummaryandconceptmapreflectinghowyourknowledgeandexperiencesportrayyourunderstandingofleadershipethics.Feelfreetodrawreferencetoanyoftheclassdiscussions,outsidetexts,orarticlesthatwilladdcredibilitytoyourmanifesto.Moredetailswillbegiveninclass.

CourseStructureThiscoursewillbeanadventure.Eachclassperiodwillbedevotedtodissectionofthedesignatedtopic.Thisdissectionwillincludeadiscussionofprescribedtheoryorideologyasoutlinedbythecoursematerials.Thisdiscussionwillbefollowedbyacandiddebateofsaidtheory’sapplicability.Finally,wewilltestourperspectiveusingcasestudiestofurtherenhanceourunderstandingoftheconceptwithinagricultural,naturalresource,andrelatedcontexts.Studentswillalsohaveanopportunitytofacilitateactivitiestoenhancetheirdevelopmentandthedevelopmentoftheirclassmateslaterinthesemester.Thiscoursewillchallengemanyofyourperspectivesandaffirmothers.Attendclasswithreadinessandaneagernesstodefendanddebateyourperspectives.

CoursePoliciesAbsences:Itisanexpectationthatyouattendeveryclasssession.Thiswillbeanintensiveattemptatgainingthefoundationofleadershiptheoryanditsapplicationtopracticeconfinedbytheuniversitycalendartoa16-weekperiod.Becauseofthisandthevalueofourclassinteractions,itisparamountthatyouareinclassbarringanunforeseenemergency.Requirementsforclassattendanceandmake-upexams,assignments,andotherworkinthiscourseareconsistentwithuniversitypoliciesthatcanbefoundat:https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/attendance.aspx.Shouldyoubeunabletoattendclass,pleasecontactmepriortotheclasssessionyouwillbeabsentfrom.
