ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader, Following a multitude of enquiries, we wrote to Council in March this year asking the reason why the new Esplanade path, between Snapper Point and Port Willunga, was so far from the existing path and clifftop views despite a large response from people in the consultation process
indicating they wanted it kept to the clifftop to retain the views. We also asked why the particular style of prison bar fencing was chosen at the lookout points. No response had been received by the middle of May so we followed it up. Enclosed is the response we got. See if you can find the answer.
02 June 2015 Mr Kevin Hutton President
Aldinga Bay Residents Association PO Box 270 ALDINGA BEACH SA 5173
Dear Mr Hutton
Stage 5 of the Foreshore Access Plan
Thank you for your letter on behalf of the Aldinga Bay Residents Association in relation to Stage 5 of the Foreshore Access Plan currently under construction along the Esplanade from Port Willunga to Aldinga Beach boat ramp. The City of Onkaparinga's Foreshore Access Plan Citywide Concept (FAP) reinforces the State Government's Coast Park vision to enhance open space linkages, provide appropriately for traffic and parking and ensure safe and convenient access for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists
along 70km of metropolitan coastline from North Haven to Sellicks beach. Stage 5 of the Foreshore Access Plan is proceeding based on the concept design presented during the community engagement phase and endorsed by Council. With regard to final alignment of the path, the location has taken into consideration user experience, protected native vegetation, the future protection of community assets from current and future cliff stability and sea change impacts. Where possible the path is located along the original path alignment, however where the opportunity exists to retreat from the cliff edge, Council has considered the safety of the
community as paramount in the planning and design of this project. The path is located a minimum of 500mm from the back of kerb for length of the project site, this is consistent with AustRoads and the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) guide, Standards for Shared Use Paths, further the final detailed design was reviewed by DPTI. The instability of the cliff in the area to the north of Gordon Street necessitates significant cliff stability work in this area, to protect council infrastructure and private property. This work is scheduled for
implementation in this location in the 2015/16 financial year. Following the completion of these works the installation of the shared use path between Gordon Street and Hack Street can be completed. The community has been extensively consulted with regard to the style of the fencing during the concept and detailed design phase of the project.

Guest speaker:
We have re-engaged Malcolm Modra from Donlan Lawyers to speak to us re Powers of Attorney, Medical Powers of
Attorney, Advanced Directive and probate issues. ALL WELCOME.
The height and style of the look-out fence of a minimum of 1.2m, is consistent with Australian Standards, Part 6A of AustRoads and the Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) guide, Standards for Shared Use Paths. Further the look-out fencing design
considers community safety, user experience and the protection of native vegetation. The final fencing styles were selected from a range of options, presented to stakeholder groups representing the Port Willunga and Aldinga communities. We appreciate your association bringing these matters to our attention and look forward to completing this segment of the Foreshore Access Plan which will complement the existing 8km of trail already completed as part of the Foreshore Access Plan Projects within the City of
Onkaparinga, providing an iconic recreational trail along our coast that is accessible for all. If you wish to discuss these matters further please contact Victoria Masterman, (Project Leader) on 8301 7328 or [email protected]. Yours sincerely, Victoria Masterman Project Leader
I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President / Editor

Belo Brazil Charcoal Brazilian BBQ
Belo Brazil is the exciting concept restaurant at the Fleurieu Golf
Course, Mount Compass. In the tradition of the Brazilian Gauchos, a unique style of cooking called churrasco (shoo-rhas'co) was inspired where the food is cooked on large skewers over a bed of charcoal.
The service is Rodizio style which means an all you can eat menu. Our servers (passadores) come to your table and carve a selection of prime cuts of meat from skewers until you are satisfied. The main fare is a selection of beef rump cap, chicken thigh, chorizo, lamb rump, prawns, pork and other specials of the day. The experience starts with Pao de Queijo (Brazilian cheese bread made from Tapioca flour), and
spicy fries with house made aioli. Side dishes accompany the meats which include traditional Brazilian rice, black beans (feijoa), tossed salad, farofa (toasted cassava flour), tomato salsa, and chumichurri. Youre welcome to take your time to enjoy the food which makes this a perfect choice for any celebration or occasion, or just a nice way to enjoy delicious food. Because our passadores are continuously circulating the room we provide you with a card, place the red side up
for no thanks - having a rest, or the green side up for yes please. This experience is suitable for everyone as the whole menu is gluten free.
When youve had your fill of main course, we serve traditional char-coal grilled pineapple coated with sugar and cinnamon.
You can choose to accompany your meal with a Caipirinha which is the national drink of Brazil. Its a mix of cachaca (white rum), sugar and limes. You can also try Guarana, a soft drink of Brazil. Compliment your meal with Miolo wines imported from Brazil or
select a locally produced wine.
In addition to Belo Brazil, our a la carte menu put together by Head Chef Tom, introduces you to Brazilian food and also features some classics and specials.
The Eagle Nest Restaurant and Belo Brazil is a great place for any occasion with seating up to 100 people. Enjoy fantastic views of the golf course and Mount Compass from inside and out on our deck. Please consider our unique Churrasco ex-perience for your next special celebration.
Restaurant open 7 days for lunch, and dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. The Belo Brazil experience is available Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday lunch bookings are essential.

Aldinga Bay Art Exhibition:
Here are the first and second prize winners from the com-
bined school art exhibition held last Saturday (27th June).
I have also put together a little editorial as well. Thanks so much for your support.
" The exhibition show cased art work from both Christies
Beach High School main stream and special needs stu-dents and Aldinga Beach PrimarySchool R7.
In total 140 art works were shown and we were thrilled to
have Lorraine Rosenberg (Mayor),Chris Picton
(MP),Hazel Wainwright ( Council) and Madeleine Elkin ( Artist) judge and present the awards.
Both Christies Beach High School and Aldinga Beach
Primary also had musicians come and play on the day as well which was wonderful. Many parents came and sup-
ported their children and the school and everyone was
impressed by the calibre of the work submitted. As coordinator I would like to thank the schools for par-
ticipating,especially Annette Greenshields from Christies
and Shane Scott from Aldinga for coordinating the
classes and teachers to ensure the works were ready for the exhibition.
Both schools have stated that they would like to do it
again next year, so we hope other schools will also join in."

My mother taught me GENETICS. "You're just like your father."
A bit of History trivia,
just in case you didnt already know.
There is an old Pub in Marble Arch, London ,
which used to have a gallows adjacent to it. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial
of course) to be hanged.
The horse-drawn dray, carting the prisoner, was accom-panied by an armed guard, who would stop outside
the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ''ONE
LAST DRINK'' If he said YES, it was referred to as ONE FOR THE
ROAD If he declined, that prisoner was ON THE WAGON.

One Way to Quit!
Peter and wife Janet
Peter, a sales and advertising promotions manager (as well as a single parent), ignored a sign he had asked for
from God. He asked if God wanted him to give up drink-
ing - and his favourite pub burnt down (the El Rancho Hotel in Ryde, Sydney). But he didnt get the message,
and was one of the first to order drinks from the mobile
canteen set up amongst the ashes.
He says hes so glad God didnt give up on him. One
night at the Parramatta Salvation Army hall Peter was
confronted with the offer to commit his life to Christ. He
made a firm decision not to! But amazed, he found him-self walking to the front of the meeting, propelled, as it
seemed to him, by an Unseen Force.
When asked why he had come to the front Peter said, I dont know. They prayed with him and offered him a
blue card to sign. It was a pledge not to drink again (just
like in the wild west Peter thought). He decided, Well if Im going to quit the grog, which I havent been able to
do so far, I might as well chuck the smokes as well - be-
cause I cant do that either.
The following days were very rough on him with a severe case of double withdrawal, and in desperation he cried
out to God, This is all Your fault. I thought it was going
to be great being a Christian. I thought I was going to get
a miracle. This is too tough. Then he thought about his involuntary trip to the altar rail.
The penny dropped, and he said, Since I believe it was You who wanted me to quit, I will. Whether it takes 12
months or 20 years to lose the taste of it, Ill keep go-ing. It doesnt matter how bad it gets.
The very next morning was Armistice Day 1975. Peter remembers it as the same day Gough Whitlam was re-
moved from office and the day he was set free from al-
cohol and nicotine dependence. For nearly four decades now Peter says he has not had one moment when he felt
like a drink or a smoke. Peter and Janet attend Southern Life Church 280 Beach
Rd Hackham. (08) 8326 0777 - Join us 10am Sundays.

Unseasonably fine weather over the past couple of
months has enabled many members to enjoy sunny
conditions when having a roll up on the greens.
A very popular Drawn Pairs Club Competition sponsored
by Apia Insurance, is being held during July and August. The first match day was held in late June and was a very
successful start to the competition with four teams finish-
ing within one point of each other!
Two teams were tied for first place and after counting
shots up the eventual winning pair was Ric Griffin and
Dave Rudman (pictured below.)
Winners of the first
match in July were Jeff Hentschke and Harvey
Huxtable.
Wetter weather in July has not dampened the
spirits of bowlers -
although playing on very wet heavy greens is
not so popular.
Now is a great time though, for anyone interested to con-sider learning bowls before the official summer season
starts.
At Aldinga Bay Bowling Club new players are always
welcome whether your interest is in the great game of
lawn bowls or simply enjoying the Clubs friendly and social environment.
Lawn bowls are truly a sport for all ages. If you have
never bowled before or if you are experienced - you will be very welcome and encouraged to have a 'roll up' any
Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday afternoon from 1pm.
Keep an eye out at the local Aldinga Central Shopping
Centre in late August where some of our Members will
be available to tell you all about bowls and share infor-mation about a very special Come Try Bowls day.
Complimentary Coaching & loan bowls are avail-
able to get new players started.
Or you may consider entering a team of four players in
the great fun summer Night Owls Competition

Sisters of Abundance In 2005 Tatachilla Lutheran College staged the musical
Sound of Music and invited mothers, grandmother and
friends to come and be involved as the Nuns in the abbey. What a wonderful experience and many did not want it to
end. It began something which became an adventure into
music. Many had not sung in a choir before and half unable to read music but when invited by Greg John to continue
the experience they jumped at the chance. Now ten years
later they continue to enjoy the adventure and the challenge
of the world of singing.
Sisters of Abundance Choir is a ladies community choir who sing simply for the enjoyment of singing and enter-
taining people. They gather each Monday at Tatachilla
Lutheran College to rehearse and learn more about how to face the musical challenges presented and produce the
sounds people enjoy. Under the instruction of their Music
Director Rosemary Nairn, the girls are put through their
paces as they learn to perfect their performances and often movements to accompany the song. Certainly a choir with
a difference.
Where did the name come from? Well they started out as
nuns or sisters in the abbey and there were quite few of them, about forty if memorys correct, so I guess you could
say they were in abundance. Seriously, they are sisters in
song, they care and support each other as sisters, and yes
they have over thirty members, so still abundantly plentiful,
but they also have an abundance of fun, laughter and singing which all adds up to Sisters of Abundance.
So far 2015 has been a busy year with more to come. Per-
formances have included Twilight food Affair at Ta-
tachilla, Arts Eco village at Aldinga, Fleurieu Festival of Performing Art at Port Noarlunga, Willunga Almond
Blossom Festival, just to name a few. At the time of writ-
ing there are still seven performances to go for the year before taking a well earned break over Christmas.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the formation of
Sisters of Abundance Choir and there is no better way of
celebrating this occasion than with music. This years
concert promises to be a big celebration of all the years they have been together and will be held on Sunday 11th
October beginning at 2pm at the Hopgood Theatre, Noar-
lunga Centre. It promises to be very entertaining with a dip into their past, with songs they have sung over the
years, including their ever popular and most requested
version of Sister Act.
Sisters of Abundance invite all members of the commu-
nity to come along and enjoy the celebration with them on Sunday 11th October.
You can find out more about Sisters of Abundance on
their Facebook page. Members of the community are
always welcome to join the choir. No audition (if you can hold a tune you are welcome), first five sessions free.
Ladies join the choir Youll be so glad you did.

OBITUARY
VALE Ruth Mary Baxendale OAM The Willunga Branch of The National Trust of
South Australia places on record our appreciation of the
life and work of the late Ruth Baxendale OAM (1925-
2015), and tenders our condolences to her family. She was a member of the Branch for forty-six
years, serving on the Committee for forty-one years: she
completed twenty-one years as Branch Chair in 2000, fol-lowed by eleven years as Branch Historian.
On 26 January 2000 she was awarded the Medal of
the Order of Australia For service to the preservation of local and family history and heritage sites in the Willunga
and McLaren Vale areas, and as Chair of the Willunga
Branch of The National Trust of South Australia.
Her family connection to these areas goes back to 1840, when her great-grandparents (James Binney (1817-
1858) and Elizabeth Boundy Binney (1820-1859)) arrived
in South Australia and settled between Willunga and McLaren Vale. Binney Road, McLaren Vale reflects this
history.
Her sustained and extensive work on local history remains with us, reflected in the records of the Willunga
Branch, her advice to many local people and organisations,
and the well-researched and most informative Willunga
Walks publication (Second Edition 1990) covering 108 of the major attractions in and around Willunga farmhouses,
shops, dwellings, parks, ruins, cemeteries - with a brief
history of each of which she was co-author. She was instrumental in the publication by the
Branch in 1988 of The Tragic Shore: the wreck of the Star
of Greece and a history of the jetties of Port Willunga by
Geoffrey H. Manning. In 2007 she received the Dr Mildred Mocatta
Award - the highest tribute The National Trust of South
Australia can pay to an individual - acknowledging the sig-nificance of her exceptional voluntary contribution in en-
couraging the growth and development of the National
Trust movement in South Australia, which included her six years service on the State Council.
She is pictured (Page 164) in McLaren
Vale: Trotts View with
her late husband and is
there recorded as saying I wear the hat of local his-
tory because I believe you
need to know something of the past to look to the
future . . . .

CADETS
Aldinga Beach C.F.S has a Cadet program that has been
running for the last 18 years. Cadets range in ages from 11 to 18. We currently have a mix of both boys and
girls aged 11 to 15. Aldinga beach Cadets train to be
future fire fighters on a Thursday night, during the school
term having a break during the school holidays. Cadet training is run by Aldinga Beach C.F.S brigade members.
Cadets wear protective overalls, helmets, gloves and boots. Cadets receive training on using hoses, radios for
communication, reading maps, bush fire fighting,
structural fire fighting, using a standpipe to fill a truck with water, ladders, team building, building fire breaks
using a rakehoe, tying various knots and the uses,
stabilizing a vehicle involved in an accident, using a back
board to lift a person. We also show Cadets through road crash rescue Cadets are shown all the tools and how they
are used by our rescue crew.
Aldinga Beach Cadets have given a few thoughts about their cadet experience and what they enjoy about Cadets.
-Using Radios and going on fire trucks -Search and Rescue
-Team building activities like hose soccer
-Learning new skills
-Going on Brigade camps -Using fire trucks for drive bys (training for fire fighting
from back of a moving fire truck for grassfires)
-Friendship and Teamwork -Unique experiences
-RCR (road crash rescue)
-Climbing on the roof of the station during ladder training
-Using a rakehoe to make a mineral earth fire break -From one of our Cadet supervisors it is always a great
feeling to watch cadets grow and learn, to be part of a
team and to give to the community.
As you can tell from the comments above Aldinga Beach
Cadets experience quite a lot during their time as a Cadet and at age 18 can move up to be a responding fire fighter
after further training.
Aldinga Beach C.F.S has had many Cadets remain on
well after being a Cadet to become long serving members and hold positions such as Captain and lieutenants.

Spring Gardening in Willunga
with a Season of Growing As blossoms appear amid the cold winter
chill it is a sign that the season of Spring
is just around the corner.
Willunga Uniting Church has many cele-
brations for the gardener in mind this
spring.
First there is the SALA exhibition, which
features wonderful floral images by
Anthi, showing all of August and Septem-
ber. Next there is the fresh and seasonal
Spring Fair.
With loads of plants on sale for gardeners. Lots of market stalls, Devonshire teas,
free face painting, childrens activities,
crafts and a Model railway display of
South Australian trains.
Put September 5th on your calendar, 10am
to 3pm, for this must see spring event.
Plans are also being developed for a chil-
drens garden. The proposed garden site
is next to the church, which will have
spaces and garden beds especially for
children. This will use local materials including
slate, wooden logs and sticks. The pro-
posed plans are now up for consultation.
There will be planned workshops and
feedback is being sought from all ages on
the childrens garden design.
Kids can get active, growing and most
likely very grubby in this project. We
need their ideas and visions on the gar-
den.
Plans for the childrens garden will be on
show at Bethany Hall during the SALA exhibition and Spring Fair. So come by
and take a look and put in your sugges-
tions.
The Season of Growing festivities kick
off with the SALA exhibition commenc-
ing August 1st until September 27th.
Opening Hours are Thursday and Friday
from 9am to 12 midday.
Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 2pm.
The Spring Fair is happening on Satur-
day, September 5th, 10am to 3pm. Wil-lunga Uniting Church, corner of St Jude
Street and St Andrews Terrace.
