Why did the American Revolution begin?
• Bad taxes
• Wanted freedom
• The citizens of Boston would not permit the unloading of three British ships
Patriots
The Patriots fought for peace
The Patriots paid a tax to England
The Patriots won the Revolutionary War
Loyalists
• The Loyalists wanted to rule the land
• Some Loyalists didn’t fight in the war
• After the war many of the Loyalists moved up to Canada and made their own community
Declaration of Independence
• The committee was Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston
• the Declaration of Independence was signed by Hancock and Thomson on July 4, 1776
• It was a big deal signing because Thomas Jefferson created a document of treason against the King of England
Rights of the People
• The pursuits of happiness
• Liberty
• The right to own property
George Washington
• George Washington was the comander in the Revolutionary War
• Later became president
• He led the Patriot army
• He died on December 14, 1799
Battle of Yorktown
• Patriots won
• James Armistead was an American spy
