Commentary: Germany 1
No surprises on the German milk market after quota end In 2015, the supply of milk in Germany increased further, although less markedly than in previous years. Due to ample supply in neighboring European countries and persistent challenges on the world market last year, prices on the German milk market continued to face considerable pressu-re at all processing steps.
After an initial throttling, the supply of milk in Ger-many developed normally since the EU milk quota system ended in April. There was no sharp in-crease, as in other member states. Nevertheless, production expanded somewhat strongly in neighboring countries and had an impact on the German market. Abundant supply caused price declines in product markets, visible throughout the value chain, which did not halt before consumer or producer prices.
Final quota year even more expensive
Large milk deliveries from April 2014 to March 2015, the final year before the expiry of the quota, caused the situation in Germany to worsen. During this period, approximately 31.32 million tonnes of milk were produced and delivered to dairies by German producers nationwide. This was 2.0 % or around 599,800 tonnes more than in the previous period. The fat correction was much lower due to comparatively lower fat levels seen last year. At around 13,400 tonnes this was about 85 % less than in the previous year, which meant a fat-corrected milk delivery of 31.34 million tonnes, an increase of 1.7 % over the previous year for quota year 2014/15. After taking quota conversions into account German milk producers were left with a
national guaranteed amount of approximately 30.22 million tonnes for 2014/15. Since the na-tional guaranteed limit was not raised again for the final accounting period before the expiry of the milk quota, the last settlement bore the full impact of the volume of the surplus from the previous year. The quota limit was exceeded by 3.67 %, according to most recent data, which was the greatest surplus in recent decades.
