Graduates have potential to earn a lot o

money if the course is in the right sectoTHE average starting salary for graduatesin the UK is £28,000. That’s according to theAssociation of Graduate Recruiters – othersurveys place it as low as £25,000 and some ashigh as £30,000.

While money is by no means everything, if you’re thinking about re-training or decidingwhat to study, it can pay to know which busi-ness sectors offer the best rates.

(If the figures below sound optimisticallyhigh, keep in mind that many AGR membersare blue-chip companies, which pay relativelyhigh salaries and may not give a true indica-tion of pay across the UK.)

Law firms: £37,000.Law came out on top as offering the best

starting sala ries in the AGR survey. A recentHigh Fliers survey (which focuses on the

leading 100 employers in the UK), put the me-dian starting salary for law firms at £40,000,behind the best paid sector – investmentbanks, at £45,000.

Starting salaries for solicitors vary greatlyacross the country. At the lower end, the go-ing rate for trainee solicitors can be £16,000-£22,000, rising to £30,000-£50,000 at the mostcompetitive fir ms. Pupil barristers in Eng-land and Wales completing their final yearof training must earn £12,000-a-year (the BarCouncil minimum), but some of the top com-mercial chambers pay as much as £65,000.

Banking or financial services: £31,250.

As you might imagine, g raduates work-ing for investment banks earn big bucks.According to the High Fliers Report, fourwell-known investment banks were offeringsalaries in the region of £50,000 this year

– and that’s before the “sign on” and othergenerous bonuses. According to a studyby Dartmouth Partners, when bonuses areconsidered, a first-year analyst can takehome between £57,000 – £74,000-a-year. For asecond-year analyst that goes up to £76,000

– £90,000-a-year, and a third-year analyst,£93,000 – £111,000-a-year.

Consulting or business service company:£28,500.

The banking sector isn’t the only industryto offer big bonuses in an attempt to attracttop talent. Many of the leading consulting

firms offer attractive bonuses on top of basicpay. Accenture, for example, offers graduatehires £31,000 – £33,000, plus a joining bonusof £10,000, split into two instalments. CHPConsulting pays about £40,042 with a £5,000bonus. In addition to performance bonusesand other perks, some companies offer MBAprogramme sponsorship as a sweetener.

Fast-moving consumer goods firm: £28,500.Fast-moving consumer goods companies

come fourth on the list of well-paid jobs.Many of the larger firms (such as L’Oréal,Procter & Gamble, Unilever, GlaxoSmith-Kline and Nestlé) offer starting salaries in the

region of £25,000 – £31,000. Most of the biggercompanies offer graduate schemes in dif fer-ent areas, such as supply chain management,financial management, business, technologyand marketing.

IT/telecommunications: £28,500.The pay range for recent tech graduates

varies considerably, depending on the size of the company and location. A techie landingtheir first job in a start-up company up northwill earn less than a new hire at Google inLondon, for example. If you’re lucky enoughto get a job with one of the big players, youcan expect to start on about £30,000. IBM paysnew graduate hires £30,000, while those work-ing in technology roles at BT can expect toearn £27,750 – £31,500 in their first year.

Accountancy or professional services firm:

£28,000.The accountancy and professional services

sector is the biggest employer of new gradu-ates in the UK, accounting for 23 per cent of all vacant graduate jobs, according to theAGR study. Starting sala ries vary depen d-ing on where you work, but the CharteredInstitute of Management Accountants saysits part-qualified students earn £31,432 onaverage, plus £1,512 in bonuses.

When it comes to getting a pay rise, yourfuture prospects look good. According to theInstitute of Chartered Accountants in Eng-land and Wales, the average earning potential

of ICAEW chartered accountantsyears after qualifying is £71,600, pin bonuses.

Energy, water or utility companyIf you’re a new graduate hoping

employment with an energy, watecompany, you can expect to earn £year, on average. While the gas antry traditionally offers some of th

jobs (the average graduate salary firms is £32,500), the plummetinghas meant many companies are cuon staff. According to some reporto hire just 80 graduates this yearfrom 250 in 2012.

Engineering or industrial compStarting salaries for engineering
