Unfilled job vacancies almost doublenational average in the STEM industriesTHE risk of job vacancies being leftunfilled in the science, technology, en-gineering and maths (STEM) industriesis almost double the average for all oc-cupations, research has shown.

A report by the UK Commission forEmployment and Skills (UKCES) re-vealed that 43 per cent of STEM vacan-cies are hard to fill, due to skill short-ages, compared to a UK average of 24per cent for other difficult to fill roles.

It also found that high level STEMworkers are less likely to receive train-ing than their counterparts in otherroles, indicating that employers mustinvest more in developing the skills ofthese workers.

According to the report, five millionpeople are employed in high level STEMroles, making these skills crucial to thesuccess of the UK economy, in termsof jobs, productivity, innovation andcompetitiveness.

Lesley Giles, deputy director atUKCES, said STEM skills underpinmany of the industries at the forefrontof the economy.

“These findings highlight an alarm-ing shortage of skills affecting key jobsin the UK economy, and point to a vitalneed to improve the level of trainingprovision offered to those workingwithin STEM industries.

“There is a vital need for employers toact now to secure a steady flow of talentwith the right skills in years to come:building more structured training anddevelopment schemes and developingclear career pathways are just two waysin which early action can avert futurecrises.”

Further findings revealed that engi-neering is the worst hit, with 60 per cent

of vacancies in this sector classedas difficult to fill due to a lack ofskills, followed by 40 per cent ofvacancies for IT professionals. Incomparison, the overall density ofskills shortages across the wholeUK labour market is around 22per cent. The report also foundthat IT and engineering profes-sionals are expected to have thegreatest recruitment needs in thefuture.

Mark Botting, chair of theScience Industry PartnershipFutures Group, said that skillsshortages ultimately affect anorganisation’s ability to competein an increasingly global market.

“Figures we have collated sug-gest that a greater proportion ofpeople currently working acrossindustrial and life sciences willbe leaving the workforce in thenext 25 years than those remain-ing behind. The sector needs todo something now to address thebrain drain.”

Yvonne Baker, chief executiveof the National STEM Centre,added: “This report highlights thecrucial importance of ensuringthat all young people have accessto the high quality STEM educa-tion, support and training theyneed.”

The UKCES made a number of recom-mendations for employers, includingthat they consider higher apprentice-ships to help develop defined careerpathways within STEM occupations,as well as ensure they widen the talentpool available to them by making theseoccupations more attractive to women.
