Banquet NEWSThe2015HiawathaChapterofTroutUnlimited(HTU)ConservationBanquetwillbeheldonSaturday,April11,2015.Ifyoulookatyourcalendar,thatdateisalmostontopofus.SogetoutyouriPads,yoursmartphones,yourregularoldeventcalendarsordatebooks,orwhateveryouusetokeeptrackofwhereyouwanttobeandwhen,andjotdownthedate,time,andlocation.

WewillagainbeattheCanadianHonker’sEventCenteratApache,151716thStreetSW(twoyearsagoitwascalledtheRamada).Theresponsetousingthatvenuewasoverwhelminglypositive,sowearereturningagainthisyear.Amy,Chris,andChefLehavebeencookingupsomenewappetizersforourenjoyment.

Thiseventwillfeaturetheusualassortmentoftopqualityflyfishingandflytyingmaterialsgivingyoutheopportunitytoenhanceyouralreadyoverloadedvest,flyboxes,andwo/mancave.We’llhaverepsfromCabelasofOwatonnatheretooutfityouwithnewclothingandgear,plusanassortmentoflocalandexoticguidedfishingtripstochoosefromandthisyearweareaddinganewtwisttotheevening.OurbanquetcoincideswiththeGrandOpeningofthenewScheelsStoreinRochester--theyarereallyluckytheychosethisdate!ArepresentativefromScheelswillbeatthebanquettodisplayaselectionofover/underandsemiautomaticshotguns---nameslikeBenelli,Winchester,Franchi,Beretta,andRemington.We’llhaveaspecialbucketraffletoallowguestsachancetowintheirchoiceofoneoftheshotgunsdisplayed,or,ifpreferred,totakeagiftcertificatetoScheelsanduseittoselectanothershotgunoftheirchoice.Therafflewinnerwillhavetofootthebillforthecostdifferenceoftheupgrade.Sorry,butthisisanadultraffleandwe’llnotsellticketstoanyoneunder18.

Askmembersandfriendswhohaveattendedthepastseveralyearsandyou’llunderstandwhythisisa‘youdon’twanttomissthisbanquet’event.Premiumqualitybambooflyrods,awoodstripcanoe,topofthelinegraphiteflyrods,andotherfishinggearitems--allhavemadepastbanquetsexceedourexpectations.TheHTUBoard’sgoalistomakethisyear’sbanquetanotheronetoberemembered.Thevariouspiecesandpartsfortheeveningarecomingtogether---thiswillbeonespecialnight!!

Thisyearwealsowanttorecognizethemanypartnerswhohavehelpeduswithhabitatim-provementprojectsoverthepasthalfdecade--thedesignersandcontractorswhobroughttogethervariousideas,acceptedchallengesandchanges,andaddedtheirownideasinordertomeettheneedsofeachprojectandtimeschedule.Pleasejoinusinlettingthemknowthatweappreciatetheircontributions.

SogototheHTUwebsitetoeasilypurchaseyourticketsonline(hiawathatu.org)andthey’llbewaitingforyouatthedoor.OrcontactanHTUBoardofDirectormemberorchaptermemberwhohasticketsforsale.Ticketsthisyearwillbea$40donationinadvance;however,ticketpricesatthedoorwillbe$50.00.Sodon’twaitasyoucanusethat$10topurchaseaticketfortheshotgunraffle.Doorswillopenfortheeveningat6pm.

WearealllookingforwardtoseeingyouattheHonkerEventCenteratApacheonApril11--it’stheSaturdaybeforethetroutopener,sothatexcusewon’thurt.

Thisyear’sHTUConservationBanquetdatecoincideswiththeGrandOpen-ingof theScheels store in theApacheMall inRochester. Tohelp facilitatebothevents,Scheelswasaskediftheywouldconsiderhostingashotgunraffleasapartofourfundraiser.

ArepresentativefromtheScheelsstorewillbeonhandthroughoutthebanquettodisplayanassortmentofoverandunderandsemi-automaticshotgunsforyourrafflinginterests.Thewinnerofthisspecialrafflemayselectonefromtheshotgunsofferedtobepickedupatthestore,ormaychooseagiftcertificatefromScheelsthatcanbeusedtopurchaseafirearmoftheirchoice.Anydifferenceinthevalueofwhatthewinnerchoosestopurchaseoverthevalueofthecertificatewillbetheresponsibilityofthatwinner.Scheelswillhandleallthenecessarypurchaseeligibil-ityandscreeningrequirementswhenthewinnercomestothestore.

theStewartvilleMiddleSchool.Sheorganizestheprogramfortheschools involvedcoordinatingwithteachersKevin

Landherr,MayoHighSchool,andBruceFrutiger,CenturyHighSchool,inRochesterandSteveHinrichsfromthenewestschooljoiningTIC,Plainview/Elgin/MillvilleHighSchool.Approximately550eggsweredeliveredtoeachschoolinearlyDecemberthankstotheDepartmentofNaturalResources(DNR)FisheriesDivisionandtheseeggsarealreadyhatched intohatchlings.Kelli has theFacebookpage setup sopleaselikeitandcheckouttheprogress.

HabitatImprovement(HI)workisstillgoingonintreeremovalofnon-nativetreesonTroutRun.TheHIprojectconstructionisnowcompletedonColdSpringBrook,EastIndian,andCampcreeks,whileconstructioncontinuesonPineCreekinWino-naCounty.DesignswerecompletedforworkonMill,Willow,andNewbergcreeks,withconstructionbids tobe solicited in thenear futureand theconstruction tobeginnextyear.FutureworkalsoincludesloggingonSpringValleyCreekandres-torationworkonLynchCreek.Lookingevenfurtherintothefuture,a large-scaleprojectontheRootRiver inPrestonhasbeenmovingthroughtheLessard-SamsprocesswiththerestoftheMinnesotaNationalTroutUnlimited(MNTU)projects.WehadHiawathaTroutUnlimited(HTU)ChapterworkdaysonEastIndian(beaverdamremovalandtreecutting)andCampCreek(treecuttingonbanksadjacenttothebikepath).

Aswebringinmoredesignersandasmoreexperienceisgainedwithstreamresto-rationintheDriftlessRegion,differenttechniquesandvariedapproachesarebeingappliedtoourprojects.WeworkcloselywiththeDepartmentofNaturalResource(DNR)throughouteachproject’slifecycleandwe’velearnedfromourcolleaguesinWisconsinandIowa,thankstoeventssponsoredbyTroutUnlimitedDriftlessAreaRestorationEffort (TUDARE).Wenowhaveavarietyof contractorsdoing theseprojectsfortworeasons:

1. State lawrequiresbidsfrommultiplequalifiedfirmsonstatefundedprojects.This requiresus to followstateguidelines for theawardingof contractsand forwhichweareauditable.

2. Therearemanyhabitat improvementprojectsbeingdonethroughoutMinne-sotabyMNTU,notjustintheSoutheast.Thishasbeenseenastoomuchworkforanyonecompany.

WehereatHTUcontinuetomonitorandlearnasourlocalprojectsmaturesowecanproviderestorationsthat improvehabitatandholdupthroughwhateverna-ture candishout.Asweworkon localHTUprojects, theconstructionplansarepostedtohiawathatu.org.

Our March meeting is the HTU Annual MembersMeetingwherewesaygood-byeandthankyoutoofficersandboardmembersleavingtheirseatsandwelcometo thenewofficersandboardmembersbeingvotedin.TheHTUSpringConservationBan-quetwillbeApril11attheCanadianHonkerEventCenter in the Kahler Apache. Additional eventscominguparetheMinnAquaadultandyouthweek-endthroughtheDNRMay29-31andT.U.N.E.CamprunbyPheasantsForeverandTUJune25-28.Moredetailscomingsoon.
