Eric Vallières, MD, is Associate Professor in the Section ofGeneral Thoracic Surgery at the University of Washington.Dr Vallières received his medical degree from UniversitéLaval in Québec and completed residencies in both gen-eral surgery and thoracic surgery at the University of

Toronto. He has a special interest in thoracic surgical oncology and is Vice-Chair of the Lung Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group. Dr Vallièreshas developed local protocols for the treatment of malignant mesotheliomaand is a principal investigator for national oncology protocols in lung cancer.His research focuses on clinical oncology trials.

Riyad Karmy-Jones, MD, is Assistant Professorin the Section of General Thoracic Surgery atthe University of Washington. Dr Karmy-Jonesreceived his medical degree from theUniversity of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada

and completed his general surgery residency and subspecialty training intrauma and critical care at George Washington University and a cardiotho-racic and vascular fellowship at the University of Alberta. Dr Karmy-Jones hasa special interest in thoracic trauma and thoracic vascular disease, whichincludes thoracic outlet syndrome. His research interests include pulmonaryischemia reperfusion and clinical trials in thoracic trauma treatment.

Michael S. Mulligan, MD, is AssistantProfessor in the Section of GeneralThoracic Surgery at the University ofWashington. Dr Mulligan earned his

medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completed a generalsurgery residency at Columbia University and a cardiothoracic surgery resi-dency at the University of Michigan. He has also completed fellowships inheart and lung transplantation and in general thoracic surgery. Dr Mulligan’sarea of special expertise is the surgical treatment of end-stage lung disease.As the Surgical Director of the University of Washington Lung TransplantationProgram, he is also experienced in lung volume reduction surgery for end-stageemphysema and for pulmonary thromboendarterectomy for pulmonary hyper-tension resulting from chronic pulmonary emboli. His research interestsinclude pulmonary ischemia-reperfusion and pulmonary inflammatory media-tors that produce chronic rejection in lung transplantation.

Douglas E. Wood, MD, is AssociateProfessor and Chief of the Section ofGeneral Thoracic Surgery and holds theEndowed Chair in Lung Cancer Research atthe University of Washington. Dr Wood grad-

uated from Harvard Medical School and completed a general surgery resi-dency and cardiothoracic surgery residency at Massachusetts GeneralHospital in Boston. He has been the Chief of the Section of General ThoracicSurgery at the University of Washington since 1992 and the Associate Chiefof the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery since 1998. Dr Wood’s interest hasbeen in developing the thoracic oncology programs at the University ofWashington. He also has a special interest in both benign and malignant tra-cheal and bronchial diseases, including the application of extended resec-tions for locally advanced lung cancer. Dr Wood’s research interests are inclinical oncology trials and outcomes data.
