1. Forward
This handbook has been developed as a guide for parents/guardians/carers and students
about matters relating to the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program at Sarina State High
School. Each family should thoroughly understand the content and follow all procedures.
2. Introduction
Sarina State High School’s commitment to digital learning has not changed from that of
previous years. Our school values the importance of being digitally connected with our
community and that we offer our students the best possible learning experiences with digital
devices.
With the concept of the BYOD program at Sarina State High School in 2020, we plan
to impact student academic improvement, engagement and attitude to learning as
well as afford our students opportunities to further develop 21st century learning
skills.
After extensive research and consultation, the school staff see great benefits of
increased individual access to a laptop in the senior grades, as having the potential of
greater student engagement, creativity and learning outcomes. In 2020, the Bring
Your Own (BYO) laptop program is offered to all students in Year 10, 11 and 12.
3. Cost to Families
There will be a cost of $50 for your Bring Your Own Device.
The following table outlines what is included for this cost:
Papercut and printing services including printing credit per term.
School technician support (connecting to the Wi-Fi service, installation of school
licensed software, troubleshooting support).
Software access and maintenance of licensing for BYO devices:
· Clickview online (24/7 access to resource library of educational videos
through any approved BYO device)
· Microsoft Office Suite 2016 (word, excel, powerpoint, publisher)
· Microsoft Office 365 (24/7 access to school email from any approved BYO
Device).
4. Software
Installation and maintenance of personal software are the responsibility of the family.
Genuine versions of software need to be installed to ensure updates. Updates should be
completed at home and a full backup of your laptop is encouraged beforehand to avoid
possible loss of data. All devices must have up-to-date anti-virus software installed
before connecting to the schools network.
Students will need to download Microsoft Office and any additional software needed for 2020
will be advised upon enrolment. The schools website contains a list of software with
download links.
5. Microsoft Office
All state school students from Prep to Year 12 can now download multiple
free copies of the Microsoft Office 2016 Suite to their personal device.
Students who want the free software will need an active Managed Internet
Service (MIS) login, school email account and password — those who don‘t
have these should contact their school’s MIS Administrator or class teacher. The
administrator will help students activate their MIS login.
Currently, MS Office Suite 2016 is available for students’ personal
equipment only — not equipment which is part of a school network.
6. Charging of Devices
Students will be expected to bring a fully charged laptop to school each day. The
power supply will not be required to be brought to school. Leaving power
supplies at home reduces the weight of the equipment student’s transport to
and from school and reduces the likelihood of damage and/or loss.
7. School Wi-Fi and Mobile 3/4G
Approved laptop devices that meet the outlined specifications will recognise the
schools Wi-Fi and students will be able to connect. Standard EQ internet security
filters will screen usage and access. Students must agree to follow the ICT
Responsible Use Policy in relation to internet use.
3G and 4G ability should be disabled in all devices as this function when activated
allows students to bypass the EQ internet security filters. Sarina State High
School will take no responsibility for the content accessed by students using 3/4G
facility on their personally owned devices. Any connection which is not through
the Managed Internet Service contravenes school policy and consequences will be
enforced.
8. School Technical Support If you run into a problem, we advise students to see the schools Information
Technology (IT) staff who will attempt to diagnose the fault. If this is not able to be
resolved by the schools IT staff, they can recommend a course of action for repair (e.g.
warranty claim, insurance claim etc).
9. Repairs and Maintenance
All maintenance for the IT device, operating system, software and/or apps
purchased by the family are the responsibility of the family. Families should
ensure quick maintenance turnaround for student devices.
10. Printing
Students will be able to connect their approved BYO laptop device via their
web browser to access printers. Students receive $5 printing credit each term.
Additional credit can be purchased by the student from the school office if required.
11. Unsupported devices
The following devices are not supported by our schools
network and CAN NOT be used:
Chromebook
MacBook
Android
LG Smartphones
Windows RT
Windows Phone
Linux/Unix/BSB/*nix
12. ICT Access Policy & BYOx Responsible

14. Security and Insurance
Lockers are available for hire at a cost of $5 per term. Parents/guardians/carers are
encouraged to seek personal insurance. Check with your preferred insurance company (or your
device seller) about personal insurance at home and, to and from school, for your laptop.
15. Damage in Transit
All laptops will require a protective bag or case when being transported. This will be an
additional cost but is well worth the outlay as it is the best form of insurance for laptops and
will often protect the device from impacts and accidents, especially when these bags/cases
are also inside a school bag.
16. Damage at School
Teachers at school will monitor all devices and rules are in place to prevent
foreseeable problems and damage, however, from time to time, accidents may occur.
If damage is caused by deliberate or careless actions of a student (owner or others),
the costs of repair will be passed onto those involved and necessary behaviour
consequences may apply. The decision around the responsibility for repair costs is at
the discretion of Sarina State High School. Students are strongly encouraged to bring
their laptop into each class and NOT leave them in their school bags.
17. General Care Students are responsible for the general care of the laptop.
General Precautions
It is recommended that food or drink should not be next to the laptop when
in use.
Cords, cables, and removable storage must be inserted into, and removed
from the laptop carefully.
The laptop should never be left in an unsupervised area.
Students are responsible for ensuring the battery is charged for each school
day.
Transporting the laptop
The guidelines below should be followed when transporting the laptop:
The laptop should always be within a protective bag/case when carried.
Some carrying cases can hold other objects such as clipboards and exercise
books but these must be kept to a minimum to avoid placing too much
pressure and weight on the laptop screen.
Screen Care
The screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. They are particularly susceptible
to damage from excessive pressure and can be costly to repair. Please follow the guidelines below:
Do not lean on the top of the laptop.
Do not place anything near the laptop that could put pressure on the screen.
Do not place anything in the carry case that will press against the cover.
Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth.
Damage/repair of the laptop screen is the responsibility of the owner/student/parent/
guardian/carer unless it has been caused by deliberate or careless actions of another student.
These costs will then be passed on.
Battery Maintenance To get the most out of the battery life of laptops, follow these simple tips:
Reduce the screen brightness to a comfortable level.
Disable connectivity such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use.
18. Laptop Specifications

laptop?
Students may bring their own laptop at a fee of $50 per year which
is included in the resource hire. Many laptop devices will meet the
basic needs for digital learning at Sarina State High School. The
school's best advice to ensure that effective learning occurs is that
the laptop meets the listed minimum device specifications.
What if my family cannot
afford to purchase a laptop
or I don’t own a laptop?
A limited number of laptops will be available for single day
borrowing if you are experiencing financial difficulty. Please contact
the school for further information.
What if I've bought an iPad? Students in years 10 -12 are unable to bring their own iPad at this
stage.
The school's best advice to ensure that effective learning occurs is
that the device meets the listed minimum device specifications.
What if I've bought an
Android tablet?
Students will be unable to bring their own Android device as they
will have limited functionality on the school network.
Will the school be able to
guide parents on the best
device/s to purchase?
The school’s advice lies in the minimum specification list.
Families should consider the student’s lifestyle, interests,
capabilities and levels of responsibility as they make their device
choice.
What if I've bought a
Chromebook?
Education Queensland schools do not support Google products.
Chromebooks will not operate on the school network. The school's
best advice to ensure that effective learning occurs is that the
device meets the listed minimum device specifications.
What if I’ve bought a
MacBook?
Students will be unable to bring a MacBook as they will have
limited functionality on the school network.
Will my child be
disadvantaged if I only get
a device with minimum
specs?
A device that meets the school’s best advice for minimum
specifications will allow students to perform the learning activities
and tasks set at Sarina State High School.
Will all senior students be
required to supply their
own laptop?
Sarina State High School is a BYOD school for senior students in
years 10, 11 and 12. All senior students are expected to supply
their own device for learning.
What are the
approximate costs of
devices that meet
minimum specifications?
This information will be available from local and national
vendors. We expect that vendors will provide a range of device
quality and price options for families to consider. It is important
to include protection case and insurance costs when considering
the overall price. These add-ons will be available from many of
the vendors at time of purchase.
From an educational
viewpoint, is one device
(laptop or tablet)
preferred over the other?
The success of a BYOD program rests in the quality of the
educational use of the device rather than the specific device itself.
The school’s preference is for a device that meets the minimum
specifications. It is likely that the student’s preference for a
particular device is of more importance in the family’s device
selection process.
Will the school still have
laptops/devices available
at all?
A limited number of laptops will be available for single day
borrowing and come with a protective carry case. Students can
collect a laptop from the IT room before school or during lunch
breaks and the laptop must be returned by 3.00 pm on the same
day.
What if I refuse to
participate?
Modern education systems are significantly supported by the use
of laptops and mobile electronic devices. Students who refuse to
participate will experience significant inefficiencies in their
learning but will be required to complete alternate learning tasks
appropriate to their learning needs. In extreme cases where this
lack of participation means that learning tasks are not being
attended to, students may be disciplined for their failure to
engage in the program of instruction.
Who determines what
content is allowed on a
device?
Devices that are used at school may only contain material that
complies with content standards that are age appropriate in
accordance with the federal government censorship guidelines.
Sarina State High School reserves the right to determine what
content is appropriate at the school.
Will students be required
to carry their laptops all
day?
The school’s best advice for device safety is for students to keep
their device with them at all times. While this is not possible in all
circumstances, the school has implemented a number of options for
students to utilise to ensure safe-keeping of their device.
Each faculty will have an advertised policy for the safe keeping of
devices. This may include bringing the devices into classrooms,
storing devices in school bags or similar in a pre-determined and
secure location. The school has installed secure lockers in behind
the IT room. The lockers will be individually allocated to students at
the cost of $5 per term. Students must supply their own padlock.
Will the school be acting as
an agent to purchase
devices in bulk?
Under Queensland Government law, it is not possible for the school
to purchase and on-sell or lease devices to families.
What security will we
need in place on the
laptop to access the
school network?
Network and device security is paramount to all at Sarina State
High School. All devices must have up-to-date anti-virus before
accessing the schools network.
How will connectivity
between School and home
operate?
School owned and non-school owned devices cannot connect to
the school network when away from the school site. All faculties
at Sarina State High School are working towards creating virtual
classrooms, via eLearn.eq.edu.au, so that senior school students
will have 24/7 online access to learning resources.
What if my laptop doesn’t
print?
Sarina State High School IT Technicians will provide software
installation, network access, printer access and internet access
advice for students in face-to-face, written and online formats.
Printer faults should be reported to the Sarina State High School
IT Technician before school, during lunch breaks and after class.
What do we do if the
device needs warranty or
damage repairs?
Parents/guardians/carers are responsible for the repair of
student devices.
Will the school
technicians help with
identifying problems on
BYO devices?
To ensure device warranty compliance, the Sarina State High
School IT Technicians may only provide advice on, or service to,
school owned devices or school endorsed devices.
How is the school going
to prevent financial
discrimination?
In 2020, all students in years 10, 11 and 12 will be required to
supply their own computer for learning at Sarina State High
School. In individual cases of financial hardship, families should
engage in a direct conversation with the school Principal to
explore avenues for support.
What happens if another
student damages a
laptop?
The owner or custodian of a device will always have a
responsibility to take reasonable steps to ensure its safe storage
and proper management. Students will be disciplined for their
behavioural actions where evidence supports a finding of
negligent or wilful action which results in damage to a laptop
device within the school. Such discipline will be under the
provisions of the school Responsible Student Behaviour Plan and
cannot include a financial penalty issued by the school. Claims for
any financial compensation would have to be dealt with through
legal proceedings or insurance held by the owner of the device.
Who is responsible for
the machine if damaged
at school?
The student is always responsible for the safe-keeping and
responsible use of their own device. The school’s best advice for
device safety is for students to keep their device with them at all
times or in an advertised, sanctioned, safe keeping place.
Does school insurance
cover damage?
The school does not provide insurance for student devices.
The school encourages parents/guardians/carers to liaise with an
insurance agent to ensure that the device is insured in its own right
or specifically covered within an existing insurance policy whilst
being used at school and/or other locations.
