It’s not about the Destination, It’s about the Journey!
Andrew Hill High School
March 4, 2017
Welcome to the 2017
California Destination Imagination
Silicon Valley Regional Tournament!
When you enter our Tournament site,
REMEMBER, …………
It is a Creative Child’s World.
Their Ideas, Their Work, Their Fun!
Sometimes a child’s idea of decoration, design, beauty, and humor does not
coincide with an adult’s.
A Child’s Imagination is Priceless!
Children can do wonderful things -- paint the wind, dance like a leaf, and dramatically portray the
colors of the rainbow.
They see potential for new inventions and discoveries in the simple things our world has to offer.
These are abilities that many adults lose along the path of life.
Enter our world of creativity and fun, and return to your childhood, full of wonder and excitement.
Enjoy the enthusiasm for living, learning, and exploring.
Be open to viewing life a little differently as you see new ideas and concepts presented in as many different ways as there are snowflakes in a snowstorm. Come in and join us for a wonderful day full of creative entertainment that can
only be found at a Destination Imagination® Tournament!

Instant Challenge
Competitive Teams report to Instant Challenge Check-In OUTSIDE of Building 200 Room 201 15 minutes before scheduled Instant Challenge Time
Team and Team Manager ONLY – No Audience Allowed in Competitive Instant Challenge Rooms
Instant Challenges require teams to engage in quick, creative and critical thinking. At a tournament, a team will receive an Instant Challenge and the materials with which to solve it. The team members must think on their feet by applying appropriate skills to produce a solution in a period of just five to eight minutes.
In a world with growing cultural connections, increased levels and types of communication, and a new need for real-time teamwork and problem solving, the ability to solve problems quickly is becoming increasingly critical.
Instant Challenges may be performance-based, task-based, or a combination of the two. Although each Instant Challenge has different requirements, all Instant Challenges reward teams for their teamwork and the creativity of their solutions. Instant Challenges are kept confidential until the day of the Tournament.
Team Members, Team Managers, and Officials must keep the Instant Challenges and their solutions confidential UNTIL AFTER GLOBAL FINALS – May 27th. Please do not ask the team to share what they did in Instant Challenge – it is their secret!
REMEMBER: Respect the Rules of Interference and resist the temptation to contribute to the team’s solution. Empower the intelligent and creative team members to own and manage their Presentation by staying out of it!
Engineering: In It Together
Design, build and test multiple free-standing structures that work together. Develop a strategy for placing structures to support as much weight as possible. Develop and present a collaborative solution to a global issue. Create and present two Team Choice Elements that highlight the team’s interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents.

Special Destination Imagination Awards
Destination Imagination® has awards that are related to high scores and others that are given because someone noticed something outstanding and special. At our Celebration of Creativity, we recognize our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams, as well as our Special Award recipients with medals.
Rising Stars!® Award: For Our Rising Stars This award recognizes the courageous, curious and joyous first steps in the journey of life-long learning. This award is given to all Rising Stars! teams who demonstrate a solution at the Tournament.
Spirit of Discovery and Imagination Award From its very beginning, Destination Imagination® has been a community. The recipients of this award are the ones who go out of their way to help others, making sacrifices not for themselves, but to give something to someone else. We recognize and applaud these members of our community who demonstrate outstanding and extraordinary levels of sportsmanship, volunteerism and spirit, be they Team Managers, Team Members, Officials, or other helpful DI friends and volunteers.
The Spirit of DI Award is given in recognition of those who act as superior role models in the areas of spirit, sportsmanship, and volunteerism.
The Renaissance Award On our journey, we sometimes encounter exceptional travelers who entertain and enlighten us along the way. The Renaissance Award recognizes those among us who demonstrate extraordinary amounts of effort and preparation in their solutions or outstanding skill in engineering, design or performance. While the destination is creativity, these fellow travelers make the journey itself memorable.
The Renaissance Award is given for outstanding skill in the areas of engineering, design, or performance.
The DaVinci Award The paths we follow on our journeys were once uncharted and unknown – until someone took a bold step in a new direction and paved a way for us to follow. To solve our Challenges, imagination, creativity, originality and courage are required. We honor these individuals and teams who most clearly demonstrate that spirit of adventurous risk in their solutions – those who most creatively traveled to reach truly new and unique destinations. The DaVinci Award is named to honor one of humanity’s greatest creative thinkers, Leonardo DaVinci.
The DaVincI Award is given for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and/or for outstanding creativity, not skill or talent.
Project Outreach®: The Torchbearer Award The projectOUTREACH® Challenge allows teams to address real community needs in new and innovative ways. Sometimes a team’s approach and Project have a greater impact than anyone envisions. The Torchbearer Award recognizes the extraordinary contributions these teams and their Projects have on the real world.
This award honors teams and/or individuals whose solutions have had an extraordinary impact in and beyond their local communities.

California Creativity Scholarships Available
California Creativity is proud to be able to offer two scholarships for students again this year. Below is a brief description of each scholarship that will be awarded at our California
Creativity State Tournament. Applications, deadlines, and additional information can be found on the California Creativity web site, www.californiacreativity.org.
California Creativity Essay Scholarship The California Creativity Association is a non-profit corporation, working as an Affiliate of Destination Imagination®, Inc., to offer a creative problem solving program within the state. Together the two organizations nurture and celebrate creativity, develop team problem-solving skills, and promote divergent thinking for participants of all ages throughout California. The California Creativity Association encourages people to seek help when acquiring skills and to look within themselves for inspiration. With the skills of creativity, self-respect, cooperation, and understanding of others, participants will use their knowledge to travel uncharted paths to help make the world a better place in which to live.
This scholarship program has been established to assist one (or more) deserving students achieve their educational goals. This year the scholarship will be awarded based on a “Creative Essay” written and submitted by applicants.
Justin Kissel Scholarship Justin Kissel was a giant among us! He gave his time and energy freely and unconditionally to our community and numerous charitable organizations. Justin never knew a stranger. He was always looking for ways to assist others and make their lives easier. Justin was quick to volunteer to help anyone, even the friends he had yet to meet. If a job needed doing Justin was ready and willing to see that it was accomplished, always exceeding anyone else’s expectations. No matter how early, late, or long he worked, Justin always had a smile and joke to share. He was happy to be helping those around him, and expected nothing in return, other than the pleasure of spending time with his friends. Since Justin enjoyed a good challenge, he accepted the tremendous task of training the Regional Score Room Challenge Masters as well as organizing and running the Score Room for the California Creativity State Tournament from 1999 through 2001. He did this with style, grace, and wisdom far beyond his 17 years. Justin had a quick wit and charm that he shared with us all. As a State Challenge Master, Volunteer, and Friend, Justin was impressive and a true inspiration to all who knew him. He gave selflessly and generously to society and our community until his untimely passing December 24, 2002. This scholarship has been established to assist one or more deserving students achieve their educational goals. Adults are encouraged to nominate students they perceive to be walking in Justin’s footsteps – those of a giant Volunteer.
John Cardosi Memorial Fund
The John Cardosi Memorial Fund has been established to honor the memory of John Cardosi and his tireless efforts to make the Destination Imagination (DI) program available to all students in the Silicon Valley Region. John always went the extra mile to recruit and encourage new schools and groups to provide the DI program to their students. He was instrumental in getting many families involved with the DI program and contributed to the development of new teams. John wanted every student to have the opportunity to learn the life skills team members gain by participating in DI. Please consider making a donation so we can continue John Cardosi’s outreach and vision of making the Destination Imagination program available and affordable for all students in the Silicon Valley Region.
Donations can be made on-line at sv.caldi.org or by sending a check payable to “Cal DI – Silicon Valley Region” to the Affiliate Accountant, Rosemary Bognar at 14843 Priscilla Street, San Diego, CA 92129 with the earmark “John Cardosi Memorial Fund.”
