After their mid-season break, the Formula 1 fraternity
got straight back to work for one of the highlights
of the year for the drivers; Round 12, The Spa-
Francorchamps Grand Prix in Belgium. One driver
who has excelled in this race in the past, Michael
Schumacher, was not only celebrating 20 years since
his fi rst win in F1, but also his 300th F1 grand prix
weekend. With everyone still wanting to know what
Michael’s plans are for beyond this year, Michael could
only tell people that a decision would not be made
until October. This in itself helped to fuel rumours about
other drivers’ plans in the paddock.
The race itself was in part shaped by what happened in
practice, and how this aff ected qualifying. The Friday
practice sessions were a complete wash-out, both very
heavily rain aff ected, which meant the only dry-weather
practice available to the drivers was on the morning
before qualifying. This meant race set-up decisions had
to be made based on very little real-time feedback.
Earlier in the season, this hindered Jenson Button with
a very diff erent Mclaren to what he has now. With new
sidepod wings on the car, in conjunction with the other
summer tweaks the team had made (and a more low-
downforce wing set-up compared to his teammate),
Button dominated the qualifying and placed his car on
pole for the fi rst time in his Mclaren career – on his 50th
attempt! Jenson described the grid as slightly ‘higgledy-
piggledy’, with Kobayashi next to him on the front row,
then Raikkonen, Perez, Alonso, Maldonado, Hamilton,
Grosjean, Di Resta and Vettel.
The last time Lewis and Jenson went for signifi cantly
diff erent downforce settings on their Mclarens for a
race, was at the Italian Grand prix in 2010. On that
occasion Jenson got second place (in a high downforce
set-up where Alonso won) and Hamilton crashed out
with a low downforce wing – spookily, something very
similar was about to happen in this race.
At the start of the race, the fi rst act of craziness was
Pastor Maldonado jump starting from his position to

end up third into the first corner (this would eventually
cost him with a 5-place grid penalty for the next race).
However, something made him spin 180 degrees after
entering that tight first corner. Behind him, was possibly
one of the worst accidents to happen to the start of an
F1 Grand Prix since 1998 at the same venue! It all came
about when Romain Grosjean kept veering right after
his start. Thinking he had passed Hamilton, Grosjean
was trying to get to the inside for the first corner,
however, he did not see that Hamilton was actually still
alongside him. Hamilton had nowhere to go. The Lotus
and Mclaren wheels interlocked pushing Hamilton’s
car uncontrollably into the rear of the Lotus, with both
Grosjean and Hamilton’s cars heading skywards, the
Lotus using the Sauber of Perez as a ramp. This took out
the Sauber, but also managed to hit the front of Alonso’s
Ferrari, narrowly missing Alonso’s cockpit! Hamilton’s car
also hit the Ferrari and the edge of Kobayashi’s Sauber.
The view from Kamui’s car was like something from a
multi-million pound demolition derby, with the Lotus,
Ferrari and Mclaren all crashing alongside the Sauber’s
right-hand side, with the Mclaren taking a chunk of
bodywork out of the side of Kamui’s car. Kobayashi
could at least drive his car to the end of the race
(finishing 13th) but it meant that two championship
rivals had been wiped out before the race had properly
got going, along with Perez and Grosjean. Keen to make
sure that such incidents are not repeated, and also to
send the right signals out to all the drivers that F1 is not
the place for such reckless driving, Grosjean was given a
one-race ban – the first such ban in the sport since the
1990s. The two front-runners that had narrowly missed the first
corner carnage were Button and Raikkonen, who were
first and third respectively when the safety car had come
to out to assist with the clear-up. Hulkenberg who had
started outside of the top ten, was at the right place at
the right time, which allowed him to be in second place
when the safety car came out, and the other Force India
of Paul Di Resta was now in fourth with Schumacher not
far behind.

At the re-start, Maldonado, who has near the back of the field, had his own first corner moment – he took too much speed into La Source and ran into the back of the Marrusia of Timo Glock. Maldonado retired his car later in the lap because of the damaged sustained in this incident (this would mean another 5-place grid penalty for the next race!). Up front, Button had it completely under control – the 4 laps under the safety car had helped to allow for a one-stop strategy window to open up for Jenson. In terms of his race, this meant all he needed to do was keep a pace that was steady on the tyres and fast enough to keep him in front of the others. A lights-to-flag victory unfurled which put Jenson back into the championship title hunt, with his first victory since the championship opener in Melbourne in March. Behind Jenson, a mixture of pace and strategy allowed Sebastian Vettel to charge through the field. After initially starting 10th on the grid, and getting bunched up after the first corner accident, Vettel picked off drivers one-by-one by making passing moves at the last corner ‘Bus-stop’ chicane on Massa, Webber and Senna within the first 10 laps. The 2-stopping strategies of drivers ahead of him at this point (namely the Force India and Torro Rosso drivers) also allowed Vettel
to make headway over them, as Red Bull were keen to also make a one-stop strategy work. Schumacher, who had already made a pass on Raikkonen in the DRS zone as early as lap 4, was also trying to make a one-stopper work. Schumacher was clearly struggling with his tyres by the time lap 19 came, and Vettel was now right up with him at his familiar overtaking spot. Red Bull at this point had indicated to Vettel that all that was required on this lap was to do the opposite to what Schumacher was going to do. Red Bull were prepared for Vettel in the pitlane, but as Vettel tried to pass Schumacher at the Bus-stop, Schumacher cut across the front of the Red Bull to make a dive into the pit lane. Quick thinking by Vettel prevented not only a collision, but it also cemented his 2nd place on the podium. With a quick change of mind, he slammed
on the brakes to drift slightly on the last corner and continued on to complete a few more laps before his pit stop.
By the time lap 32 came, Raikkonen was back on the tail of Schumacher, who again was starting to struggle with rear tyre grip. With a good run out of La Source, Raikkonen was able to make a move at the beginning of the famous Eau Rouge corner that got him finally by the Mercedes driver in a move that was very similar to one Mark Webber famously pulled on Fernando Alonso last year. A couple of laps later, Schumacher had to concede that his attempt at a one-stopper was failing and needed to make a second stop for tyres, putting him further down the field.
The best of the 2-stoppers were Raikkonen and Hulkenberg – Kimi got the final podium place while a 4th place for the German was the best result of the season for Force India. Unfortunately for Paul Di Resta a KERS-unit failure meant that he was not able to defend against many of the drivers around him, finally making 10th position. Mark Webber, who did not have the pace of his teammate, lost a position in the DRS zone to Felipe Massa’s Ferrari with 4 laps to go, meaning Massa and Webber finished 4th and 5th respectively. Schumacher managed
menslifestylespain.com october 2012 75
to finish the race (without 6th gear on the final few laps) in 6th place, with Vergne and Ricciardo having their best combined result of the year for Torro Rosso in 7th and 8th. In the last few laps, Bruno Senna, who managed to set his first ever F1 fastest lap after making a late tyre change as a result of a puncture, completed the race in 9th. Nico Rosberg, who had started from last row of the grid, failed to make his one-stop strategy work and got to 11th in the end.
Even though there was little gap between the Belgian and Italian races, this did not stop the rumour mill going into overdrive surrounding driver movements for next year, or more specifically, what was going to happen to Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton’s current contract with Mclaren expires at the end of this year, and according to TV pundit and ex-team boss Eddie Jordan, Hamilton was potentially going to be jumping ship to the Mercedes team. Eddie also believed that this would be to replace the retiring (for the 2nd time) Michael Schumacher, however, Michael had still not confirmed his plans. Even if one part of the jigsaw is true, it could still mean Lewis and Michael pairing up if Nico Rosberg was extricated from his current contract with Mercedes. Certainly the German team will not want to be seen as forcing Michael Schumacher out of his seat, which could make the Rosberg-replacement option more of a possibility. People were also asking ‘what is in this for Hamilton?’ With a major overhaul of the engine regulations due to take place for the 2014 season, perhaps a role with a so-called ‘works’ team could have its advantages in the long-term. Mercedes, who certainly have one of, if not THE best engines in the current formula, could hit the sweet spot when the rules change for 2014, including new V6 engines with turbos.
At the famous Monza Autodrome in Italy, Jenson joined Lewis on the front row of the grid for the 3rd time this season. Mclaren created history by becoming the first team to take 62 front row lockouts in Formula 1, beating the previous record set by Williams. Behind the front row were Massa, Schumacher, Vettel, Rosberg, Raikkonen, Kobayashi, Di Resta and Alonso. This was Di-Resta’s best ever qualifying, he was actually 4th fastest but had a 5-place grid penalty due to an enforced gearbox change. Ferrari would have threatened Lewis for pole had a rear roll bar not broken on Fernando Alonso’s car near the end of Q3.
In the race, Hamilton managed to keep the lead at the start from a charging Massa, who Lewis managed to stave off at the first corner. It wasn’t long before Button got past Massa, and Vettel also managed to get Schumacher in the DRS zone. In similar style to his drive in Valencia, Alonso was able to make up ground early on by passing Di Resta, Kobayashi and Raikkonen, before catching and eventually passing Schumacher with 7 laps gone, putting the Ferrari into 4th place with a serious chance of a podium. Jean-Eric Vergne had a scary moment when part of the rear suspension failed near the end of Monza’s main straight, launching his car over the kerbs at the first corner forcing the front of the car into the air, and putting his Torro Rosso into retirement.
As the race developed, certain strategies were again working better for some teams and drivers than others. Mercedes decided to take the more conservative 2-stop strategy for both of their drivers, whereas the vast majority of the front runners went for the one-stop strategy. It was also interesting to see the progress on Sergio Perez in the Sauber, who had taken the unusual route of starting on the harder tyre. Starting from 12th position on the grid, this harder tyre appeared to be the best performer for the early part of the race, allowing Sergio to make several passes on the opening laps on the likes of Rosberg, Senna, Di Resta and Kobayashi, and at times was driving at the same lap times as Hamilton’s lead pace. After Schumacher made his first stop, Perez was able to catch up with Raikkonen and make a pass on lap 17, putting the Sauber driver into 6th position. With this particular strategy, when the other front runners made their pit stops, Perez was able to take the lead on lap 24. On his now fresh rubber, Hamilton was able to re-take the lead and pass Perez on lap 28, with Perez coming in for his pit-stop a lap later.

For the 5th ever Formula 1 night race, Round 14 of the championship was once again at the Marina Bay circuit in Singapore on September 21st-23rd. The sport was coming to terms with the loss of Professor Sid Watkins, who died a few days after the Italian Grand Prix. ‘The Prof’ (as he Sid was affectionately known within the paddock) for the majority of his time spent as the chief medical delegate between 1978 and 2004, was a pivotal figure in helping to form the current safety rules and regulations for the sport. As a result of his tireless work, all drivers have Sid to thank for helping to make the sport a safer place. As a trackside doctor, Sid also

The hot-spot for this race was when both Vettel and Alonso were racing with each other. First of all both cars were pitted at the same time on lap 20, which meant both cars ran side-by-side in the pit lane on exit from their stops. For a few laps Alonso was looking for a way past the seemingly slower Red Bull. Vettel did his defensive job well at the first corner chicane after Alonso had a run on the Red Bull in the DRS zone on lap 26. Alonso kept close behind, and when it came to the long acceleration zone of the Curva Grande, Alonso went to Vettel’s inside (the opposite of where both cars were situated when battling with each other at the same spot in last year’s race!) where Vettel appeared to not allow Alonso the room, meaning the Ferrari had all 4 wheels forced wide onto the grass at somewhere approaching 180mph! This was deemed by the stewards to have been an illegal move by Vettel, and subsequently Vettel was awarded a drive-through penalty.
Alonso was able to keep the car on the road, and in a similar position 3-laps later, he was able to make a successful move on Vettel. Vettel’s drive through eventually put him down to 9th, but this was not the only drama for Vettel. With 7 laps to go, Vettel was informed by his pit-crew to stop his car on track, as the team could tell that there was a major problem developing with his alternator. It was the same problem that stopped Vettel from winning in Valencia. Having made good progress after his drive through this was a body blow to Vettel, and again another dent was made to his championship chances. For Button, who was on for a Mclaren one-two, he had his own woes to deal with when a fuel starvation problem forced his retirement.
Whilst this was happening, Perez continued his charge on the soft tyres, which were working extremely well against his opposition who were now all using the harder tyre. This allowed passes on Raikkonen and the 2 Ferraris, and allowed Perez to finish second behind the un-hindered Hamilton. Alonso was happy with his 3rd position, which meant he extended his championship advantage at this stage to 37 points. So the podium was complete with the 3 drivers who suffered the most from the first corner smash in the previous race! With paddock still focusing on Hamilton, he appeared a little under-whelmed with his first ever F1 win at Monza when stood on the podium.
Webber did not end his Italian Grand Prix well. With a handful of laps remaining, under pressure from Schumacher, and with a distinct lack of rear tyre grip, he managed to spin his car round at the exit of the Ascari corner, and in the process, severely flat spotted all of his tyres. So much so that the vibrations forced him to retire his car. The first double Red Bull retirement since Korea in 2010!
Further down the field, Jerome D’Ambrosio, who was deputising for the banned Grosjean for Lotus, finished a lowly 13th, while Maldonado kept himself very low-key after all of his trials and tribulations to finish 11th, behind his teammate.
menslifestylespain.com october 2012
helped to save the lives of many drivers involved in heavy crashes, including the likes of Reubens Barichello and Gerhard Berger. Qualifying for the race was shaping up for a showdown between Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton, both appearing to be in a league of their own with their lap times on the build-up to Q3. As it turned out, to use Red Bull’s team principle Christian Horner’s phrase, Red Bull “lost their rhythm” which allowed not only Lewis Hamilton to get pole, but also Pastor Maldonado to get 2nd position ahead of Vettel. Behind formed Button, Alonso, Di Resta, Webber, Grosjean, Schumacher and Rosberg. Big name scalps not to get
into the top ten were Raikkonen, Massa and Perez, who lined up 12th, 13th and 14th behind Hulkenberg. This was the first time that Mclaren had secured a fourth consecutive pole in a season since 1999!
In the race, Hamilton started well but on the first couple of corners, Maldonado gets too much understeer, which allows both Vettel and Button through. Further down the field, different drivers struggle to get through the first 2 corners cleanly, with Rosberg, Webber and Senna amongst the drivers taking to the escape road, and Massa collects a puncture which puts him to the back of field after his pit stop.

A mixture of tyre strategies again means that when the leaders come to pit for the first time, it’s a little bit of a lottery as to which part of the field they come into. All the front-runners started on the ‘Super-soft’ tyre, with only Hulkenberg, Perez, Vergne and Kobayashi starting on the slightly harder ‘softs’. Webber is the first on lap 9, and after his stop emerges behind Charles Pic in 20th! When Vettel comes in on lap 11, and has to deal with Perez, who he passes fairly quickly, and then Raikkonen. Alonso stops on lap 12. Hamilton starts to suffer with his tyre wear and comes in on lap 13, and thanks to these slower cars holding Vettel up, Hamilton is able to keep ahead of the Raikkonen/Vettel squabble (Vettel eventually uses his DRS to pass the Lotus on that lap). Maldonado comes in soon after along with Raikkonen, and Button then pits on lap 15. A series of cars start to make moves on Perez and Hulkenberg, starting with Alonso and Maldonado, and Di Resta (who has also made his first pit stop) also gets by Hulkenberg before both Hulkenberg and Perez make their first stops around lap 19.
Everything seems to be going to plan for Mclaren but then Lewis slows down at the beginning of lap 23 – his gearbox is broken, and the cars coasts to a halt. Hamilton’s retirement is a devastating blow to his championship hunt! This puts Vettel in the lead with Button second. The second-wave of pit stops kick off on lap 29, again with Webber. Both
Maldonado and Alonso pit on lap 30, meaning Alonso is stuck behind the Venezuelan for a few more laps, but both rapidly catch Rosberg and Grosjean, who are 4th and 5th at this stage and both yet to stop. On lap 33 Narain Karthikeyan crashes his HRT into the wall at the tunnel that goes under one the grandstands, which causes the safety car to come out. Raikkonen chooses this exact moment to make his second pit stop. Shortly afterwards, in this safety-car period, Vettel, Button, Di Resta, Grosjean and Maldonado (again), all decide to pit. This falls brilliantly for Alonso, as he is able to make up 4 places during this period and takes up his place behind the safety car in third place behind Vettel and Button. On lap 36, Williams radio in a message to Maldonado asking him to retire his car – he has a major hydraulic problem, and comes into the pits shortly afterwards. This is the 9th Grand Prix in a row that Maldonado fails to score points. When the safety car comes in at the end of lap 38, Button slightly misjudges Vettel’s pace and almost ploughs his Mclaren into the back of the leading Red Bull at the re-start! Button complains over the team radio that Vettel was “very stop-start”, but after the race, the stewards find no evidence of erratic driving by Vettel at this stage and no further action is taken.
A driver who does get a penalty for the next race however is Michael Schumacher. After the re-start, Michael misjudges his braking at turn 14 and crashes into the rear of the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne, taking both the oldest and youngest drivers out of the race. With Schumacher having done something similar earlier on in the season, the stewards decided to award a 10-place grid drop penalty for the subsequent race instead of the usual 5-place drop. With this being the 7th retirement for Schumacher this season, the question will be asked: Is Michael now getting too old for racing?
This accident brings the safety-car out again, and Webber, Hulkenberg and Perez all take stops during this period.
The 2 safety car periods help Massa to come back into the point positions, and back into a position to make some moves on his competitors. First of all he despatches his countryman Senna with a very bold move on the tight Anderson Bridge, which almost causes an accident between the Ferrari and Williams – investigated by the stewards but seen eventually as just a racing incident. On lap 46, Massa also passed Ricciardo into 8th position. Lap 47 sees Grosjean letting his teammate Raikkonen get by him for 6th position, with the driver’s championship being Lotus’s priority. The 3-stop strategy did not work out well for Mark Webber, being tucked up behind Kobayashi in 12th, with Hulkenberg and Perez in close pursuit behind. Schumacher is an ambassador for UNESCO and a spokesman for driver safety.
Driver Profiletried a move on Hulkenberg on lap 49, where contact between the cars meant parts of bodywork came flying off the Sauber of Perez, Webber makes a move on the following lap at the 7th corner, where Webber ended up with all 4 wheels off the racing circuit in the move that saw him get past Kobayashi – Hulkenberg also tries get by Kobayashi in the next corner but gets his left rear tyre hit by the front wing of Kobayashi, causing damage to the Sauber and a puncture for Hulkenberg’s Force India- both cars are forced to pit. Due to the safety car periods, the overall race length is reduced by 2 laps to become a 2-hour long timed race. With 6 minutes to go before the end, Webber catches and passes Senna. In the last few minutes Webber manages to catch 9th place man Ricciardo, but fails to pass and finishes in 10th position. However, after the end of the race, the stewards viewed Webber’s earlier move on Kobayashi as illegal, and awarded a 20-second time penalty onto Webber’s overall race time. This penalty relegated Mark from his 10th place finish to being outside of the points.
The race ended with Vettel winning back-to-back Singapore Grand Prix’s. His second win of the season and Red Bull’s fourth of the year. Rather poignantly, Vettel dedicated the win to the memory of Sid Watkins. Button and Alonso were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
Paul Di Resta finished 4th to claim his best ever result in Formula 1. Rosberg, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Massa, Ricciardo and Perez made up the rest of the top ten.
Williams’ race was made worse right at the end when Senna reported a loss of power. The underlying problem forced the last Williams to retire. Although not in the points, Timo Glock’s 12th position is the best position the Marrusia team have managed since their inception. It means they leapfrog Caterham in the Constructors standings, which could be of financial benefit come the end of the season.
Even though Vettel has cut Alonso’s championship lead to just 29 points, Fernando Alonso will still be happy with another podium – this being the 81st of his career, placing him ahead of Ayrton Senna in the history books, who managed 80 podiums before his untimely death.

TURBO S CABRIOLET
If life is a journey, wouldn’t it be a tragedy not to enjoy it to the full? Perhaps it’s this – admittedly somewhat philosophical – outlook that best explains the desire for an open-top 911 Turbo.
It’s all about that intense experience of driving with the hood down.

The side air-intake grilles in the front apron have titanium-coloured painted slats. To the right or left respectively of the grilles are the daytime running lights, positioned low down. Like the indicators, they utilise LED technology to provide increased illumination and give a characteristic look. Optional dynamic cornering lights are an additional safety feature (standard on 911 Turbo S models).
On this 911 Turbo S model, the forged aluminium wheels are in the RS Spyder design with a central locking device providing a good glimpse of the yellow brake callipers.
The rear features LED taillights that extend right round to the wings where they taper to a point. The LED brake lights respond extremely quickly, thereby increasing active safety. In other words, the traffic behind is warned sooner.
The two tailpipes are positioned neatly in the recesses of the rear apron and provide a visual reminder of the engine’s increased power.
A characteristic feature of the 911 Turbo is the rear wing, which extends at 120 km/h (75 mph), retracting again when vehicle speed drops to around 60 km/h (37 mph). The drag coefficient is just 0.31 (Cabriolet models: 0.32).
DesignThe styling is dynamic without
being fussy. Sporty without being ostentatious. In short, no gimmicks,
no showiness, no doubts.
menslifestylespain.com october 2012 83
The interior design is also characteristic: sporty, uncluttered and ergonomically refined.
Careful consideration has been given to the interior geometry and there is a generous amount of occupant space. The gear lever design is exclusive to 911 Turbo models equipped as standard with the manual gearbox. This 911 Turbo S model has the two-tone leather interior with contrasting seams on the seats, door panels and dashboard.
Besides the equipment that you would normally expect to find on a convertible car, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet have the same standard specification as their Coupé counterparts.
To prevent body flexing as much as possible, the body is designed for high torsional and flexural strength. As a result you get the same precise, direct driving experience as you do in the Coupé models. Despite the slightly heavier weight, fuel consumption is comparable with that of the Coupés.
The dynamic engine mount system of the Sport Chrono Package Turbo (standard on the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, optional on the 911 Turbo Cabriolet) reduces oscillations and vibrations and further improves ride comfort.
Where safety is concerned too, the Cabriolet models meet the most stringent requirements. These, too, have full-size airbags for driver and passenger as well as Porsche Side Impact Protection (POSIP). The safety package is supplemented by the effective roll-over system and reinforced A-pillars.

The fully automatic fabric hood is lightweight and robust. It saves weight in just the right place and keeps the centre of gravity low. When stowed, the hood requires signifi cantly less space than a folding hardtop. The glass rear screen is scratch-resistant and heated – to provide excellent rearward visibility. A rain channel on the hood reduces dripping when the doors are opened.
Electrically powered, the hood is opened using a button on the centre console or via the key remote.
The concertina action ensures optimum protection for the interior lining. The entire operation – be it opening or closing – takes approximately 20 seconds. For added convenience, the hood can be operated while the vehicle is travelling at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph).
The interior hood lining is made from a sound and heat-insulating fabric. The resulting noise levels are astonishingly low, even when travelling at high speed. Ensuring you hear almost nothing – apart from that typical Porsche sound. Optional equipment includes a tough and lightweight aluminium hardtop which is also easy to fi t. The interior is lined with a sound-absorbent fabric that complements the passenger compartment.

PerformanceIn the 911 Turbo S models, a modified valve control system and an adaptation of the engine management, combined with an increase in maximum boost pressure by around 0.2 bar, enable the power unit to produce 390 kW (530 hp) between 6,250 rpm and 6,750 rpm and generate a permanently high torque of 700 Nm between 2,100 rpm and 4,250 rpm to deliver even more power to the road.
The consistently high low-end torque of both engine variants means that you can relax behind the wheel – and relax about fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is a consideration that at present is becoming at least as important as performance figures. Including – perhaps particularly – for sports cars of this genre. Despite the increase in power, the 911 Turbo with the standard six-speed manual gearbox uses 9% less fuel than the previous model. It has been possible to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 11%. The fuel consumption and emissions of the 911 Turbo S models are as low as those of the 911 Turbo models, despite 22 kW (30 hp) of extra power output. Both engine variants comply with the Euro 5 emissions standard.
This has required the use of sophisticated technologies and processes. Examples include direct fuel injection (DFI), VarioCam Plus, Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) and the expansion intake manifold.
On balance, the engine of the 911 Turbo S model demonstrate’s power, even when it’s not just about power in the traditional sense of the word.
When fitted with the manual gearbox, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.8 seconds. With PDK and the Sport Chrono Package Turbo with dynamic engine mount system (standard on the 911 Turbo S Cabriolet), it takes even less time, just 3.5 seconds. Top speed is 312 km/h (194 mph). The 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, equipped with PDK as standard, demolishes the 100 km/h (62 mph) barrier in 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 315 km/h (196 mph).

How much? From €41,541 depending on the model and extras.
Fuel Consumption?Average Fuel Consumption of 44.1mpg (51.4mpg for
economical driving).
CO2 Emissions Emissions are 171 g/km.
How does it drive? The E200 CGI with its supercharged 1.8-litre engine
dispenses a 0-62mph sprint in 8.7 seconds (8.8 with an
automatic gearbox). Its acceleration is more than ample
for the cut and thrust of everyday driving. If you’re a
performance junkie there are numerous options, from
the 3-litre E350CDI (diesel) which can manage 149mph
and 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds to the E63 AMG with its
6.2-litre V8 that drops this time to just 4.6 seconds
while being electronically limited to 155mph. Mercedes
rear-wheel drive and steering now has an easier time
of things with its longer wheel base providing extra
comfort. As well as the option of air suspension, which
smooths things out even further.

Why would I want one?Eff ortless carrying capacity is the E-Class estate’s key strength, premium luxury in one smart-looking package. It’s comfortable, good to drive and well equipped.

About the carThe once radical shape of the 5 Series has now matured nicely into a discreet but smart piece of design. In a bid to keep things fresh, BMW has made a few small changes to the latest car. At the front, the headlights and indicators are now clear glass while the kidney grille sits fl ush with the bumper. The air duct in the rear valance has been revised while the side sill gets an additional contour line and horizontal LEDs are used in the rear light cluster. Inside, the door panels and window switches have been redesigned and there’s now eight freely programmable ‘favourites’ buttons on the dashboard so that drivers don’t have to use the infernal iDrive control system quite so much. There’s also an optional Lane Departure warning system off ered.
Fuel Consumption?Average fuel consumption of 44.8mpg (53.3mpg for economical driving).
CO2 Emissions Emissions are 165 g/km.
How much? From €45,250 depending on the model and extras.
How does it drive? The 5 Series Touring serves up a superb combination of comfort and responsiveness. The comfort is partly thanks to the extended wheelbase – the 5 Series is the longest car in its class – while the optional Drive Dynamic Control helped put a spring in our step thanks to the ability to toggle between four chassis-altering settings: Normal, Comfort, Sport and Sport+. In short, when your eyes are focused on what’s in front of you it’s completely possible to forget you’re driving an estate at all. There is a choice of four diesel engines in the line-up, the 530d off ers sports car-like acceleration and lots of pulling power yet the 535d comes with an eight-speed automatic, bringing smoother changes and improved response, but can be specifi ed as an option on all the other models making the 5 Series estate a true all-rounder.

Why would I want one?If you want an estate car that looks great and drives brilliant yet is still practical, as well as very economical running costs, then the BMW is a great choice.

ACCORDING TO LINEA DIRECTA, 3 OUT OF 4 ACCIDENTS RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH ARE CAUSED BY DRIVER ERROR
Whenever we fi nd ourselves in a diffi cult or dangerous situation when we are driving we only have a fraction of a second to take a decision and carry it out correctly. Consequently, when drivers take the wrong decision, the number of accidents resulting in death or injury is tripled, as fi gures show that 73% of accidents are caused by drivers making a bad decision, compared to 27% in which they acted correctly.
This is the main conclusion of the study “Decision-making when driving” in which 174,000 accidents resulting in injury or death have been analysed. This means that in the last 4 years, nearly 130,000 accidents resulting in injury or death could have been avoided if the drivers involved had been able to assess the dangers on the road correctly.
The most common errors are due to drivers being distracted, joining roads incorrectly, turning badly, illegally overtaking and not maintaining a safe distance between the vehicle in front. As for types of road, Línea Directa’s report confi rms that conventional roads are the most dangerous, due to the fact that 76% of accidents take place on them. On dual carriageways and motorways, the most common types of accident caused by driver error are rear-end collisions and vehicle crashes, mainly due to sudden braking and the switching of lanes.
Driver Profi le
Men aged between 18 and 24 who have held a driving licence for less than two years and the over 65s are those most likely to be involved in accidents due to driver error. The former because they have a lower perception of risk and the latter because they have lost certain skills. On the other hand, women aged between 35 and 64, who have held a driving licence for 15 years or more are those who take the best decisions.
